after months of thinking about and planning this radio show, @bavedacon finally has the first episode of fizzling hats coming up on november 29 from 7-8pm. the show is supposed to present a wide range of music styles, but in this episode bavedacon decided to play electronic music he currently likes to listen to and play (pls book me for your party)

starting with playful deep house the mix is mainly dominated by groovy and driving house and ends with some breaky, spherical sounds.

"It can be dark, but it has to be groovy and it has to be soulful. That's how I work."

The mix is inspired by recordings of early 90s Jungle live sets. I wanted to put something together that channelled the same energy as in those recordings, flaws and all. The result is a mix of 90s Jungle and newer Drum & Bass, which I hope will be a good introduction for those that are not familiar with the genre and an absolute rinse out for the Jungle heads!! Try listening on your commute to work, it’s bound to get you pumped especially on hump day.

Al Zanders: Music From Memory Special - July 2023

‘Curry’s House with D.D.Curry’ is a new 2-hour dance music program on Voices At Night that combines DJ sets and guest interviews. The London-via-Brooklyn host is a DJ, producer and co-founder of electronic labels @fortunesignal and @workingrhythms. Each month, Curry will invite a guest DJ to provide a 1-hour set and have a lively conversation about songs that influenced them. In this month’s installment, Curry’s mix draws from classic house styles and includes a number of the latest releases in the scene. He’s joined by beloved NYC-based Canadian DJ/producer @heidyp, who discusses her musical roots, world travels, joining the @xoxanyc collective, and upcoming vinyl release with Detroit label Rocksteady Disco. She brings her inimitable house stylings to craft a delightful one-hour guest mix.

My friends often describe my DJ sets as “chaotic joy”. For example, I’m no stranger to blending K-pop and amapiano together and then slamming down a bhangra DnB remix just to mix things up!

It’s a representation of that electric feeling you get on a Friday where you can leave your worries at the door until Monday. There’s a bit of something for everyone; Baile Funk, Jersey Club and some very bassy electronic dance tracks. Keep your ears peeled for music by ahadadream, Bianca Oblivion, SPHMRE & Ambition. I wanted to also use tracks to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month (celebrated between July 18th and August 17th!) to show that different cultures can come together to create some dope blends.

Rolling through next, it’s Joe FM (@joe_fm) schooling us in the deeper and lesser known sounds of UK Funky. With many tunes revived from an old hard drive, it’s an exciting showcase of tracks that barely saw the light of day, and guaranteed to get you in the party mood.

⭐️ What’s your name and where’s home for you?
I’m Joe FM, and Leeds is my home. I have lived here for all of my 30 years apart from a few years in Liverpool for Uni.

⭐️ Describe your vibe!
Very chilled as a person but quite chaotic on the decks! Definitely guilty of a rash blend (not necessarily a clang) every now and then, but always aim to keep momentum and energy flowing while switching between genres.

⭐️ Representing… 
The Leeds based collective ‘Hauser’ (keep an ear out for music coming soon). Also representing all the bedroom/party/wedding DJs and music collectors that never find the time to put themselves out there for more regular/serious gigs.

⭐️ Love and shouts to… 
My musical collaborator Benjamin Craven and other Hauser heads, Belfort/Owen Williams (@belfortuk), Public Broth (@publicbroth), my fiancé Ruth and my cat Pudding. All of these inspire me daily!

⭐️ Tell us about the mix!
I recorded a funky house mix, as nothing gives me the Friday feeling and makes me want to dance quite like those syncopated snare drums! Went through one of my dusty old hard drives to remind myself of the deeper and ‘not-so-cheesy’ side of the sound. Many of these tunes were only shared on old forums and over MSN messenger, and never had proper releases on labels, meaning finding any evidence of them online nowadays is difficult.

I wanted to shed a light on some lesser known tunes from the golden era of UK funky but also throw in a few classics and some more recent Bandcamp finds, to show that there is still life in the genre yet! I recorded this in one take, as I feel it gives far more energy and a rawness to the blends that suit both my mixing style and the genre as a whole. Hopefully this mix can show any doubters that there is more to UK funky than the migraine skank.

⭐️ What gives you that Friday Feeling?
Waiting months for an album to finally come out, only for me to ruin it by overplaying it within the first day of it being released. Also Lil C’s Pum pum power hour on NTS!

My name’s Stringer Low I’m from Essex originally and have lived in Nottingham & London but now call sunny Leeds my home.

Leaning toward the more atmospheric and darker sounds but it’s also important to me that the selection is eclectic and full of energy.

⭐ Tell us about the mix 

Expect electronic sounds with a range of flavours, generally leaning towards UKG, breaks, techno, electro and of course jungle. I’ve tried to include a mixture of light and dark sounds whilst also providing some form of flow and a build in momentum.

I would say it can be listened to in pretty much any situation, on a long drive home, during a grim day at work or in preparation for a night out. It was recorded on two ageing CDJ’s and a Technics 1210.

Listening to the above mix and thinking wow there’s some great blends in here, time for tequila.

Quiet in the beginning, but down to laugh! Musically, I love a whole range of genres, heavily influenced by UK music.

All my siblings as they put me onto good music from a young age! Especially my older brother @mankeepitdeep for being my starting point in learning how to dj.

⭐️ Tell us about the mix!
This is my 6th Nostalgia Mix I've done, the house and UK garage tunes will get you reminiscing! This is music I've heard growing up and a lot of people will recognise the tunes and I hope they feel their connection to it and get good energy from it. And if it's your first time hearing them I hope you make your own new connections to it!

One of my favourite producers ever is Jamie xx, and 'I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)' by him just fit so well as the 1st song for the Friday Feeling vibe!

⭐️ Was it planned, spontaneous, live etc.?
It was a planned mix as all my Nostalgia Mixes are, I like to make sure it's as good as I can get it for online play, and that it flows well-ish.

⭐️ When/where/how might we best enjoy the mix?
As loud as you can, and with sun if you can but can't guarantee that in the UK unfortunately lol!
