Alexander Johansson & Mattias Fridell - Slyngel EP [LMSK002]

On its 46th release, MindTrip welcomes two substantial artists from Sweden on a collaborative 4-track EP. Matthias Fridell and Alexander Johansson are standalone producers but their common ideas and vision brought them together on various shared releases in the last couple of years. The two combined push their boundaries while squeezing their 909 sounds and short synth loops with a clear 90's flavor. Here's what they say about their ''Datamaskin'':
''The tracks came together based on the limitation to use only a Dreadbox Erebus synth as the main element for playing sequences, and building drums, assisting synths & rhythmic patterns around those sequences.

Since the Erebus is fully analog with no way of saving your patches, the limitations placed on you force you to come up with ideas and create something during that current session and capture it. That's the core and foundation of the tracks residing on this release.

The only time post-editing was used was for "Debil" where some hi-hats were added afterwards.''

Spektakel EP comes with four assorted, yet unified tracks of mischievous and sly techno. Herman opens the release with jacking rhythms, driving hi-hat patterns and a shifty synth riff. The jacking characteristics are also present in Tittut, a somewhat more minimal track with slippery grooves. With Sista ordet, things takes a different direction, with it being based on a dirty stab sequence with vocal hooks, as well as classic dirty machine funk with layers of hi-hats. Techno veterans, Alexander Johansson & Mattias Fridell, have been releasing music together for over 20 years on many of the genre's most established and notable labels, and here we are in the year 2023 seeing their first definitive techno album on Recorded Things.

Label owners Oliver Rosemann and Sebastian Rothermel approached Alexander & Mattias with the proposition to make an album for their label, and after heartfelt conversations about it, everyone concluded that their ideas aligned, both conceptual and musical and that it was time to set a plan for it in motion. True to their nature, Alexander and Mattias provide their signature sound in album form; efficient rhythmical work-outs & stern, yet playful synth sequences that sometimes bear the mark of classic techno, and other times take unexpected directions. All in a package that presents an uncommonly energetic album, with no fillers or pauses. There is just one direction, from start to finish.

Knasigt Komplement EP is our 7th release on Lømsk and makes for a scatty journey. “Sinnesjuk” is based on a synth sequence with impish behavior, thick low-end and a mischievous vocal constantly making itself heard throughout the track. While “Imitera” is a basic workout with a rough kick and a frisky synth lead, “Hitman 2.0” takes off where “Imitera” ended, and instead focuses on a fundamental groove together with a naughty synth riff, taking unexpected turns now and then.”Kuddkriget” further accentuate the classic grooves but flips things in another direction with a mellow synth pad and a crisp dub stab. For “Digitaliserat smuts” we recorded a simple rhythm through a broken amp speaker and built layers of digital dirty ambiances upon in. “Halvdant ombyte” is another one of our basic, hectic and anxious synth & drum machine workouts, based on two repetitive synth riffs. “Lokaliserat nederlag” goes into machine funk territory with flanger flavored beats and chunky stabs, and finally “Jesse svarar aldrig” rounds the release off with bright lush pads over a steady groovy bassline and rhythm section. Lømsk's Alexander Johansson and Mattias Fridell made their Blueprint Records debut at the start of last year with their "Geometriska Strukturer EP" (BP067). Now they're back with a new four-tracker, "Marvatten EP".

This Swedish duo have built an impressive reputation since their production debut in 2000 and have gone on to release music on labels including Audio Assault, Symbolism, H. Productions, ARMS, XXX Records, and of course James Ruskin's Blueprint, as well as their own Lømsk label, which they launched in 2022.

On "Marvatten EP" they deliver four more solid Techno cuts that are primed for the dance floor, set forrelease 26 April on vinyl and digitally.
