Life from Above Vol. 3

We premiere new music from Vancouver-based artist Destrata features on Of Paradise for his first solo EP. We host ‘XL’ a dark and heaving bass-heavy piece of UK-flavoured breaks.

Destrata, based in Vancouver, marks his debut solo body of work for Of Paradise with his 4 track offering ‘Counterweight’ – a multi-layered, textured, and frequently hyper-real trip through contemporary bass-heavy club music. Destrata’s scientific approach to production sees him disassemble and reassemble every piece of a track until a structurally perfect composition emerges, putting the crucial aspects of UK-flavored bass and breaks under the microscope.

Counterweight shows a flow of ambient inspirations, demonstrating Destrata’s interest in more ethereal and fractal sounds designed to ooze through back rooms, sheltering the listener with a hefty lushness.

We premiere ‘XL’ a tribal-licked growling bass-heavy cut. Cut from the same cloth as intricate hard-drum grooves and post-dubstep influenced tools, Destrata displays a cocktail of UK-flavoured sub-churning club music. Vocal stabs and tribal percussion give the track a locked groove that is high-tempered yet remains icey, add some pounding sub punches and some off-kilter perc hits and you’ve got a classy piece of modern UK-inspired club music.

Petr Bursa is a waxing moon in the Prague experimental electronic scene. His debut EP Heart's Halo lures the listener into an eerie, fog-cloaked landscape, drawing us with a siren-like spell, a beckoning from the sonorous darkness that brings a momentary bewilderment only to wash it away in rushes of tenderness and awe. An ephemeral, yet pressing whisper guides the listener through a liminal journey into the whirl of dizzyingly looped synthesizers, erupting into vocals as tempestuous as frail. The image of being swallowed by mists and swayed by stormy seas is not a mere poetic association, but comprises the very core of Bursa's synaesthetic imaginary. It is an image both frightening and familiar, as universal as it is intimate, expressing sharply the intense reality of a windswept present that feels increasingly impossible to navigate. Bursa’s debut offers us a frosty, melodic consolation that the hardships of self-discovery are shared, and that while the planes of waves appear endless, we never sail them alone.

The album's title, Past Life, refers to the feelings and ideas that were circulating when the tracks were created, but also to how it feels to look back at old music and the old selves who created it. There is an unsettling but tempting feeling about the future for the artist. 

The tracks selected for this release are those that he always listened to without really knowing where they came from or where they were going, as he is still surprised to this day that he created them. They do not resemble Ranga's previous music, but rather, for him, they are music of the future.
