IDS Recordings is a label run out of Arizona by Ryan Wick. They have a really wonderful discography, encompassing Ryan's own productions and collaborations, and works by outernational artists including Elias Garcia, Precipitation, and Iluso. Ryan and his buddy Dalton Castile kick off FPR this weekend with a mix under the alias Something Steppers - a project which explores any and all things dub. 

After that, it's the return of Fuueihou. Fuueihou runs the vinyl-only label Druzhba & is a founding member of the house duo Fuzoku. He shares a mix full of texture, colour, and unreleased cuts, that demonstrates his decade-and-a-bit in the trenches of underground electronic music.

Ep 335 w/ Something Steppers & Fuueihou

Birkenthot is a Te Whanganui-a-Tara based artist with an all encompassing sound. They have quickly ascended, landing slots in their hometown, in Otautahi, and regularly at Twisted Frequency Festival. They are also part of Pōneke soundsystem crew Third Eye Hi-Fi, and a fixture on Homebass on Radioactive. They start the show with an hour of high energy basslines and strong percussion.
 
Herstot is a Tāmaki Makaurau based interdisciplinary creative. Herstot has been making music since 1999, and DJing through Oceania since 2003. His mix for FPR, and the forthcoming Herstot single releases, explore the relationship between noise, distortion, deconstructed rave and 160bpm+ club music. It's a heavy ride.

This weekend on FPR, we are graced by two of Aotearoa's finest - Dadlib and Waewaexpress. In the first hour, Dadlib explores culture and heritage, celebrating South Asian contributions to the dance music spectrum and beyond. Afterward, Waewaexpress blends past and present.

Stella Z recently released ‘In The Woods, Will Be Late' [Third Place], an effervescent record written in the mountainous seaside province of Fujian, China. She also holds a residency on Threads with her long-running Mars Weather Today show. This weekend, she shares a dreamy mix that veers between low slung rollers and transformational frequencies.  

After that, we hear DJ Birdbath. Their Blue Tear EP came out in March on the INDEX:Records imprint Appendix.Files. They have also recently relocated to Aotearoa from Manchester, and intend to move to  Te Whanganui-a-Tara in August. They submit a leftfield dance-floor odyssey from their current base, in the northern reaches of Te Waipounamu.

This weekend, we air the final episode of Friendly Potential Radio. 

The broadcast started off a little bit after our party series began, with the first episode airing in April 2016. Since then, we have featured about 430 separate artists from over 40 countries, with the lion's share from Aotearoa. We're hugely grateful to all the artists and DJs who have submitted mixes, and the patience and faith of 95bFM, Mouthfull, and Radio One 91FM.

To finish things off, Sam Harmony shares some weirdness and dance cuts, and Simon shares some long-standing favourites.

Ep 339 - The Final Episode w/ Sam and Simon

Anton Spice is a broadcaster and journalist from the UK. He is founding editor of The Vinyl Factory online magazine, co-runs Dislo Publishing, has written and produced music documentaries, has contributed words to multiple publications and liner notes, and appeared on NTS, Worldwide FM, Dublab, and now - Friendly Potential Radio. 

"Like any good daydream, this mix isn't particularly linear. Instead, it moves between scenes, moods and sequences, loosely inspired by the title of Takami Hasegawa's only album L'Ecume de Jours (itself named after Boris Vian's 1947 novel, Froth on the Daydream). When I first heard the track of hers I've included, it totally blew my socks off - a jazzy little ballad, tinged with melancholy and outrageous orchestral flourishes. It has a baroque, melodramatic quality that I think you get in a lot of the less mainstream pop, synth and new wave from the mid '80s. On the one hand, the rhythms and melodies are punchy and full of confidence, and then on the other, there is a naïve, nostalgic strangeness to the song-writing, so aware of its own fast-fading youth that it almost melts away completely. If there's a feeling I wanted to capture with the mix then it is this contrast, between vivid technicolour and hazy drift."

Diesel is a non-binary DJ and the antithesis to the current House & Techno scenes in Auckland. They coined the term "Fetish House" as a means to decolonise their music and distinguish themselves from existing normative structures. However, Diesel's world building goes beyond just the music. At events like Nympho, Diesel unapologetically weaves high-energy club sets with performance and visual art to create liberating moments for the local queer community. We share an auditory glimpse into their world, before their performance at Beacon Festival 2021 on Saturday. This journey to the depths is entitled "Piece Of Underworld". Leave your inhibitions at the door.

For the sixth annual NZ Music special, we hand over the keys to national treasure Roger Perry.
  
Roger has been fighting the good fight for nearly 40 years. He started DJing in 1984 at the Venue, an all ages club run by Russ Le Roq (Russell Crowe). From there, he went on to run Asylum, where New Zealand audiences were first introduced to house music. He hosted NZ's first dance music radio show, Asylum FM on bFM. He has also made some masterful music as Reactor Music, Kingsland Housing Project, and Toolbox. His one-take mix for us tonight is a canvassing of house music in Aotearoa, from peerless classics to killer cuts from the new school. Don't miss out.

Gee Dee lives in New York, where he deejays and makes music. He's co-founded Earth Beat, is a resident at Good Room in Brooklyn, and plays regularly at Philadelphia's long-running party Making Time. He also has a new live project with Juan MacLean called Infinity Machine, and hot solo releases for Planet Trip Records, Superior Elevation Records, and Light of Other Days.

About the mix: 
For this mix I took a dive into meditative club music. A whole lot from the early to mid 90s, a few classics with a couple of newer bits peppered in. Mostly CD's. A few ambient people trying their hand at tribal downtempo stuff, some left-of-center house and new beat, a couple of trance tracks and a few peak-time rave goodies. Mostly pitched down to a slightly more manageable speed ;)

Since 2003,  HTRK have built an incredible sonic universe, through their multiple studio albums, and work with luminaries Rowland S Howard and Mika Vainio. They appear busier than ever, as they work on another full length of sacred mood music. Tonight, Jonnine and Nigel bring together a textured little escape, at moments filled with bliss, and at others with some unease. We've been trying to get them on the FPR almost since its inception, and are rapt that it has finally happened. 

Despite the sudden cancellation, this broadcast is still technically in advance of their live show in Tāmaki Makaurau.

حلالاماما (HALALAMAMA) is the moniker of Iraqi artist Mariam Tawfik.  Mariam is behind the club night HAFLEH, which is a party run by and for migrants in Aotearoa. Her sets centre heavy percussive sounds and vocals, and are influenced by long drawn-out orchestral ballads by artists such as Oum Kalthoum and Warda, and works by more contemporary middle eastern producers such as DJ Plead and Al Nather. Her mix for us tonight draws together tracks and samples from several different genres and eras, including the Iraqi classic Khala Ya Khala by Bassim Al-Ali, one of her mothers favourite tunes, works by the Wellington based producer Aspen, and bangers by Nancy Ajram.

Jerome Derradji is a producer, DJ, compiler and operator of the legendary Chicago label Still Music, and its subdivisions Past Due Records, Still Techno and Stilove4music. The labels have been going since 2004, and have featured stellar contemporary releases, deep dives into undersung labels and producers, and holy grail reissues. It's an honour to have Jerome jump on our final guest mix for the year. Here, Jerome shares a mix comprising current favorites and some absolute classics sprinkled with a few of his label's joints here and there. Mānuka Recordings is a boutique record label from Tāmaki Makaurau, led by local lynchpins Dylan Biscuit and Kenny Sterling. As a collective, they focus on supporting and collaborating with musicians in their immediate community, pushing artists’ boundaries, and searching for the magic within spontaneity and imperfection. Their debut release was an amazing 7" of slow burning soul and boogie by Summer Vee, a release championed both locally and internationally. There is more in the pipeline. Tonight, the label heads share two hours of absolute jams.

Ep 328 w/ Mānuka Recordings

On this episode of Friendly Potential Radio, we hear from two pillars of the Aotearoa underground - Keepsakes and Ebb. 

Keepsakes's hard-edged and spirited music has been released on a hit-list of labels, including South London Analogue Material, Perc Trax, Mord Records, and Mindcut Music. He also runs HAVEN INTL, a club series and vinyl-focused record label that has released work from artists including VTSS, Tommy Holohan, Peder Mannerfelt, Ayarcana, Ansome, and Ryan James Ford. Ebb's releases for 1985 Music, Cutcross, Raw Basics, Subtle Recordings, and Par Avion showcase dark, menacing atmospheres, powerful sub work, fluid, impactful drums and otherworldly sonics. The Ōtautahi based artists are going head-to-head on the Saturday of Beacon Festival in March. This weekend, they share a taster of what to expect.

Benny Salvador is at the forefront of a new dance movement in Aotearoa. The Te Whanganui-a-Tara based artist has a reputation for refined and exploratory dancefloor odysseys, driven by his innate curiosity and a childhood surrounded by music. He also an irrepressible force in the studio, with a wicked run of EPs out on his own imprint Aunty Records, features on compilations by Antal and Juke Bounce Werk, and a grab-bag of unreleased cuts and edits ready to be unleashed at every show.  He takes over Friendly Potential Radio in anticipation of his appearance at Beacon Festival in Tāmaki Makaurau next weekend.
