The FROCKUP mix series returns with the very talented DJ and Beat Mag mix series curator, Ham. Ham has been on our radar for a while now, ever since her outstanding Novelcast 73 and lossless.radio mixes came out earlier this year. But as fate would have it, I had the absolute pleasure of meeting her at Outta Range in April, a small festival run by some of the minds behind Dance Flaws. We chatted about all things music, the local scene and certain Nikki Webster B-sides and upon hearing her eclectic approach to the interstitial DJ duties, we knew we just had to get her involved in the FROCKUP mix series. 


Ham's range and diverse music taste definitely shines through in this mix, crossing atmospheric breaks, percussive house and even spooky Sigourney Weaver film samples. This mix has been aptly titled Space Forest Ranger, taking the listener on an interesting and well thought out interplanetary journey throughout the cosmos...so beware the complex bleeps and pulsating bloops. Ham was joined by MX Mami for a couple mixes, a Scottish DJ now based in Naarm, forming an hour and a half of truly special listening. 


In the midst of the Pandemic and against multiple lockdowns, Ham has still had an outstanding year. From playing across Darklove and organized noise parties, to mixes for Genre Spanner and arvo girls, to hosting a daily wake up call for Area 3000, it’s been hard to keep up with the constant goals Ham is kicking. Not only this, but Ham has been curating the Beat Mag mix series, delivering one of the most impressive and diverse series currently in Naarm. We can’t wait to see everything Ham keeps on doing, but until then have a listen to her mix below.

FROCKUP 010 // HAM

‘For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

What’s good, good people? Doesn’t it feel nice to be slowly transitioning back towards a sense of normality? Yes, yes it does. Do I have the perfect accompaniment for this shoulder state of mind? Yes, yes I do. Number 63 comes courtesy of Oz legend Biancolato aka Nick Whiteside. 

Nick has been around the traps for a few moons, a tidy list of productions and a DJ’ing resume that would get him almost any job, the Biancolato moniker is a recent excursion into a bit more intimate territory and damn does he do it well. I cannot stress this enough, THIS MIX SLAP’S (hard), oozing maturity and understanding beyond comprehension, it transcends any situation and directly dumps you into a good (great) mood. So many perfectly tempered tunes, meticulously pieced together to build the ideal ‘home’, and that's exactly what it is, a place to be comfortable, a place to feel safe, a place to share with your loved ones. This is the perfect embodiment of the series, a real chance to show and tell a different side. I've blasted this thing countless times over the past months and I can guarantee its freshness, welcome to your new soundtrack. I actually think he put it best into words (see below)

It’s the endless twilight of an adolescent summer, long, lazy hours poking rocks with sticks on warm afternoons and waiting for something to happen, like finding a blue-tongued lizard during a dust storm, perhaps.

It’s your first kiss, soft, terrifying. The smell of another person’s breath.

It’s thinking in loops and regret. It’s an unwavering optimism.

It’s the comfort of familiarity; a sound, a scent, a snippet of melody that conjures a space in your mind, perhaps forgotten.

It’s a selection of music, of records. A soundtrack to a journey that may have already happened, or may be about to begin. Perhaps it involves distance, momentum. Perhaps inertia.

A journey can be soothing and fulfilling, rewarding, but also sometimes uncomfortable. Things happen, maybe unexpectedly. 

But by the end of the journey, by definition, you’ve arrived somewhere, even if that somewhere happens to be right back where you started from.

The ever charismatic and talented FB Perimeter ( @fb-perimeter) graces the Animix this week with a classy vinyl blend of house, minimal & grooves. 
Finn started off in the nation's capital, as one of the brains behind Canberra's favourite music spot, Sideway.

Relocating to Melbourne pre-covid, Finn helped massively on the Inner Varnika team this year.. He's now on to bigger and better things in Paris, no one can stop him!

@madalba was born in July 1985 in Bari, south of Italy. From a very young age, her musical interests moved across a broad spectrum, going from house and dance music to rock and punk leading her lastly to techno and club-culture.

At age 22 she approached the local scene as Djane with numerous performances in the club circuit of Bari. Through the years she has developed a continued and careful respect of the musical experience. She moved to Berlin in 2011 started djing with only vinyl records.

This helped her to build a strong reputation as an underground techno DJ, providing opportunity for her to play in clubs such as Tresor, About Blank, SchwuZ, SO36 and Mikz in Berlin where she lives today.

In September 2011, she spent one month in Detroit where she started the collaboration with DJ Seoul, Tom and Angie Linder of Detroit Techno Militia. This travel has definitely and radically changed her approach to the techno concept, which she considers more a political and social phenomenon and a lifestyle than just a musical genre.

Back to Berlin she immediately came into contact with the queer scene, then in full bloom, building a network primarily of interpersonal relationships based on mutual support and collaboration, a network that naturally strengthens over the years, leading her to basically all queer realities of the city and beyond. At the same time she cultivated her main profession as a trauma surgeon in a historically male-dominated environment which strengthens her awareness of her role as a woman in a still strongly male-dominated society.

Thanks to these solid experiences she became resident of the party Homopatik, at the time the flagship of the Berlin queer reality.

Her first releases on vinyl came out in 2014 on DTM-Label (Detroit) and Arkita Records (Berlin), the label that she spawned together with Synkopheit till 2016.

In 2017 she launched her own record label Future D\'e9j\'e0 Vu releasing 5 EP respectively by Transient X4, Ken Karter, Mannella a.k.a. DHARAXT, Phontonz & Shcuro, Rage Therapy.

In September 2017 she played her first house set for the summer closing of the Berlin party Buttons.

In Summer 2018 Madalba became resident dj at the historical club Tresor in Berlin. The same year she collaborated with the London based crew Aria with a party series in the UK capital.

Currently she is techno resident dj and co-organizer of the party Buttons in About teaming with Danilo Rosato, Anna Bolena, Jabob Meehan, Shingo Suwa, Akirahawks and Paolo Di Nola.

Over the years, his awareness of the communicative power of his role as a DJ not an end in itself but always aimed at creating a network based on the basic values of absolute respect for all forms of diversity, has been strengthened to the point carrier of all her artistic and interpersonal expressions.

Turbo Thot encapsulates all things up-beat, driving, and high-NRG. Swerving between an array of genres, her creative beginnings came in the form of her passion for hip-hop, and Southern trap. Her style has evolved into one that’s optimal for the club, influenced by Seth Troxler, The Martinez Brothers, and Loco Dice, traversing tech-house, disco, indie-dance, and tribal textures. As a long-standing resident at Section 8, Glamorama and Melbourne’s Music Room, Turbo Thot’s output is one that pulls listeners onto the dance-floor, daring them not to lose themself.
