This mix plays along the borderline between analogue and digital music, bringing together unexpected blends of live instrumentation and quantised tracks, which is a real challenge for any DJ, especially on vinyl. The mission was to take the most analogue and organic sounding dance music (if you recognise the title track) and bring it together with the most danceable live recordings available. 
The result is a whirling storm of different influences and genres, with tracks from Brazil, Algeria, Mali and Nu Yorica all designed to make you move your body and your soul. Whilst there are influences from all over the world, the guiding force is the incredible talent coming from the contemporary London jazz scene, featuring tracks and albums from Kokoroko, Joe Armon Jones and Yussef Dayes that feel like they deserve to be played until the end. This mix situates their work within a lineage of great musical innovations to come from the UK’s dance music scene since the 1990s. 
Part of the intention of this project is to interact with a live audience. Having recorded this mix at home without a crowd, it has a more serious, sincere and conscious affect, rather than the spontaneous joy of a party.

Mutant Jazz

This mix for me was about trying to have as much fun as possible, mashing-up as many different styles, genres and tempos into an hour in a way that makes complete (non)sense. 

This is an easy task if you just stop the track and start the next one, so my goal was to avoid any pull-ups forcing me to find other ways to make it happen. I either tried to find tunes that had their own tempo switch-ups or made them happen myself using the different RPM pitch settings on the record player. It felt liberating to disregard the convention that you should never touch the pitch (tempo) whilst everyone can hear. Result is some pretty topsy turvy sounding tunes!

Topsy Turvy Tunes

Selection brings together tunes from all over the African continent - from Mogadishu to Luanda, Accra to Addis Ababa - laid over heavy percussive, bassy numbers. The idea behind the mix is to make the incredible musicality sing through but give it a contemporary accompaniment that gives the originals the dance floor weight they deserve. As ever, mixing non-quantised tracks on turntables is a bit of an art, especially for these prolonged blends that start to sound like remixes. 
Finally, I've been reading and watching interviews with Fella Kuti recently, the king of Afrobeat, who saw music's potential to liberate humanity from oppression. So, i've chucked in a few clips from interviews that resonated with me.

Frolic is a new musical alias, by a Bristol based DJ, that fuses different musical genres in ways that shouldn’t make sense, embracing the silly and the unexpected. Mixing both analogue and digital records together imaginatively, which sometimes requires some heavily involved live beat matching where the drummer drops a beat.
The tune selection is vibrant and eclectic, with music from all over the world rejecting a formulaic understanding of how a dance party should be.  
How to free ourselves on the dancefloor and how the dancefloor can free our everyday reality requires some proper meditation, so a complimentary aim of this project is to deconstruct some of the norms and limitations in club culture through essays, collaborations, interviews and workshops.
