Recounting stories from the dusty, obscure corners of colonial times, The Doomed Bird of Providence set off on an exploration of early Australian history, darkly probing its more abject and harrowing aspects. The resulting music is brooding, dramatic and heavily indebted to Ennio Morricone, Jacques Brel, Scott Walker and the English Folk Revival. Buttressed by accordion, ukulele, bass, guitar and violin, singer Mark Kluzek rants and laments the death and degeneracy of settlers and convicts alike in this hostile, unrelenting environment. The Doomed Bird of Providence shed light on obscure corners, to mythologise and empower previously hidden stories. And to bring forth all that is disturbing, mysterious and tragic.

Will Ever Pray is their debut album - a meticulous creation cleaved from original historical source material, bringing to visceral life the forgotten stories of Australia's earliest days, bathed in salt, blood and dark-deeds.

Four of these tales are recounted in the first half of the record. In 'On a Moonlit, Ragged Sea" the death of embezzler John Croaker is imagined as taking place in the tropics and the flies swarming the corpse is conveyed with the drone of strings; 'The Wild Beast of Goat Island' recounts the macabre fate of Charles Anderson who was chained to a rock on Goat Island and survived on offal thrown at him by passers-by; 'On the Deathbed of Janus Weathercock' tells of the "wormy forebodings" of alleged poisoner and confirmed dandy, Thomas Griffiths Wainwright and how they haunt him on his deathbed; 'Fedicia Exine' is about
the little known daughter of a convict, Maria, who was a slave in British Honduras when she was transported for murder and who later married a whaler. The song attempts to create a sense of identity for the mysterious girl, for whom there are no records after birth, from the geography of Hobart.

The latter half describes in five parts the massacre on board the The Sea Horse through an original broadsheet. Part 1 evokes an atmosphere of foreboding, the ship has returned but the massacre is looming; Part 2 puts lyrics from the broadsheet to a more upbeat melody and sets the scene for what is about to happen; Part 3 describes the massacre using some of the broadsheet's description and Part 4 is a lament for the lives lost. Part 5 is a version of the traditional 'Dives and Lazarus' melody, referring to the bible story about the spiritual victory of the poor over the rich. Here the tale has been given a twist in light of the massacre: the people were all hard working and became wealthy people, although some were originally convicts. They were murdered by poor criminals who became wealthy through their terrible actions.

Kluzek started writing lyrics inspired by reading books such as The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes and the band was formed in 2008 to provide a musical setting. In addition to Hughes' 'warts and all' account, Kluzek imbibed the history of early convict and whaling centres such as Norfolk Island. The music that emerged deliberately avoided the notion of 'authentic' Australian music, rather aiming to encompass elements of music that Kluzek thought would better suit the dramatic potential of the stories.

Gradually other musicians became interested in being involved live and in recordings. Ukelele player Drew Barker (SOUP, Croft) and bass player Stafford Glover (Extreme Noise Terror, Beatglider) performed with Kluzek at the first Doomed Bird show at the Colchester Arts Centre supporting Simon Finn. Since that time the band has grown into a five piece including Daniel Merrill (Dead Rat Orchestra) on violin and Richard Acton (formerly of Limn) on guitar.  Will Ever Pray also features the talents of Rachel Laurence (Viola) and Tony Ramsey (Guitar).

Front & Follow presents a series of reinterpretations by Kemper Norton of ‘Mahina’ by The Doomed Bird of Providence. 

Mahina is based on one Australia's worst ever natural disasters. The category 5 Cyclone Mahina took place in 1899 killing over 400 people.  The original track (by Doomed Bird) attempts to evoke the disaster and it's aftermath where amongst other things dolphins were found strewn on 50 foot cliffs on Flinders Island.

‘To Mahina’ begins with the ships that formed part of the Cornish diaspora to Australia in the nineteenth century, and imagines an encounter between a Cornish emigre miner  and  a Japanese pearl fisherman who has made a similar journey. Because of dangers such as shark attacks, risk of drowning , equipment failure and the bends,  many Japanese pearlers died before working off their passage.  The Thursday Island pearling  fleet, which relied heavily on immigrant labour , was the major victim of Mahina. Most victims were never named.

Mahina features on The Doomed Bird of Providence’s Blind Mouths Eat, released in November 2013. Continuing an exploration into the darkest regions of Australian colonial history the album takes the style and content of their first long player (Will Ever Pray) into a more violent, death ridden landscape supported by a more eclectic and experimental approach to song writing, and featuring an extended line-up including Katie English aka Isnaj Dui.

The Doomed Bird of Providence and Kemper Norton both recently contributed an EP to the Collision/Detection series (www.ldwr.net), alongside a host of artists including Hong Kong in the 60s, Psychological Strategy Board (Jonny Mugwump and Time Attendant) and Isnaj Dui. 

Kemper Norton’s album Carn is out now on Exotic Pylon. He returns later this year with an album for Front & Follow and a bonus album of remixes and rarities (including this EP, and many other tracks, on CD for the first time).

Pye Corner Audio is the audio recovery project of the Head Technician, a mysterious and studious figure who has developed the ability to travel sideways through time and space via a) the use of rewired analogue recording equipment and b) the judicious application of moss and fog. Alongside the self-released Black Mill Tapes research series (recently collected on vinyl and CD by Type Records), the Head Technician has released music through Dekorder, Type, The Tapeworm and Boomkat Editions, not to mention a full-length album, Sleep Games, on Ghost Box. Earlier this year, he was coaxed out of the lab and indeed the British Isles to join Mogwai on their European tour, where he took considerable pleasure in sampling the lichen of foreign lands. The Head Technician claims not to know where the bodies are buried, but would be happy to show you his reels.

Old Apparatus were specially selected by the Head Technician to remix Black Mist, and have turned in a distressed deconstruction in keeping with their rusted iron aesthetic. A collective of shady individuals most often found muttering obscure invocations in the low-rent drinking dens of North East London, their stubbornly uncategorisable sound debuted in 2011 with a hissing, creaking self-titled 12” on Mala’s esteemed Deep MEDi label. Their debut album, Compendium, was released on their own Sullen Tone label in 2013. The outfit has in addition birthed a number of intriguing offshoots such as Harem, Saa and Penny. One of them may be standing behind you right now, reading this over your shoulder. Don’t look.

Much imitated but never equalled, The Outer Church is a shadowy Brighton-based organisation dedicated to the promotion of uncanny sound and vision. Its semi-human representative is music writer and persistent meddler Joseph Stannard (The Wire, Mojo, Red Bull Music Academy, The Quietus etc). Since its inception in 2009, The Outer Church has presented live audiovisual performances from Demdike Stare, Raime, Pye Corner Audio, Some Truths, Ekoplekz, Kemper Norton, Hacker Farm, Umberto, High Wolf, Grumbling Fur and many, many more. “Magnum Innominandum. A random access myth. The clarion signals the opening of the portal. Remember to take a reading. A hex and a pox and the land is ours.”

Front & Follow present Sallow Tree by Lutine - taken from their debut album White Flowers - showcasing Lutine’s unique and stunning sound, focused around the mesmerising vocals of Heather Minor and Emma Morton.

Front and Follow present Beneath Swooping Talons, Laura Cannell’s follow-up to her critically acclaimed debut album Quick Sparrows Over the Black Earth.

With deconstructed bow and the extraordinary sound of double recorder, Beneath Swooping Talons has grown out of unearthed fragments that became improvised pieces, then immediately recorded in single takes. Tapping the potent rural landscape and long-dormant musical modes, this album encompasses both wild animal calls and long forgotten liturgical chords, which drawn through Laura’s music seem to originate from the same, ahistorical place.
With a background in traditional, early and experimental music, she creates a solitary minimalist chamber music, where one player makes all the harmonies.

Based in rural East Anglia, Laura Cannell’s work draws on the emotional influences of the landscape and the sometimes dissonant chords of early and medieval music. Since founding and touring with duo Horses Brawl a decade ago, Laura has established her practice as a solo musician with recorder and fiddle her primary instruments. Her first album Quick Sparrows over the Black Earth found an audience keen for more, and she has followed the release with a UK wide touring schedule that has included Royal Festival Hall, Supernormal Festival, Tusk Festival, The Cube Bristol, Café Oto, Cathedrals, churches and National Trust castles as well as interviews and airplay on BBC 6MUSIC, NTS Radio and many others.

Laura writes:
“We build our own traditions, music which feels like a home for our souls. A place we can be entirely ourselves, where we don’t have to think, just be and channel pure music without human interception, only in the physical need to express it with the instruments.”

Laura also performs in an experimental ¬fiddle duo with André Bosman (aka electronic musician Hoofus) and ‘Oscilanz’ with Ralph Cumbers (aka electronic artist and trombonist Bass Clef/Some Truths) and renowned drummer Charles Hayward (This Heat, About Group). She is also working on a new trio project with cellist Oliver Coates & Ralph Cumbers.

Getting up too early and seeing all the land ablaze with the easterly winter sunrise before the day is shrouded with grey in moments, leaving no trace. All the ghosts are lined up to soundtrack our thoughts which know no times or dates, only tones.

The Doomed Bird of Providence present two new tracks: The Bell of the Jardines and The Death Flurry (a live favourite). The two tracks are available to download from Monday 12th December.

Continuing the theme from their recent album 'Will Ever Pray', the tracks recount tales from early Australian history. The Bell of the Jardines is about Frank Jardine, telling the story of his troubled life through journeys across North East Australia, abducting Somoan princesses, attracting the ships to the rocks (with 'the bell of the Jardines'), and his eventual death of leprosy.

Our second release in LDWR’s Collision/Detection series comes from West Norwood Cassette Library aka Bob Bhamra - a one man assault on modern experimental music with 4 stunning new tracks.

His LDWR version encompasses the “warm and rough”(FACT Magazine) house style epitomised by Collision Bump and the drum ‘n’ bass What’s Going On (Stuff is Happening), which is West Norwood Cassette Library’s homage to Jonny Mugwump and his Exotic Pylon (samples taken from his radio show). The project is book ended with two short collage pieces, Intro Digest and Outro Digest based on West Norwood Cassette Library’s recent "Instant Digest" project (hosted by the Modifyer blog) (http://modyfier.wordpress.com/2011/06/29/west-norwood-cassette-library-process-part-269/).

West Norwood Cassette Library is a DJ, producer and record label owner with releases on Teal Recordings, New Kanada and Mutate, as well as on his own 10" press imprint, WNCL Recordings (also home to Ultramarine, Knowing Looks, Milyoo et al). His own productions have been given the remix treatment by leading lights such as Karenn (Blawan and Pariah), Quantec, Brackles and Adam Marshall. He also records as one half of Data 70, who are due to release "Space Loops Volume 3" (Enraptured Records) in early 2012 - described as 'ambient music for the impatient' (all the tracks are one minute long) - and has recently presented sound projects under the guise of No.1 Astronaut (an attic tapes release on Gutterbreakz / Ekoplekz's short lived Bleepfiend label and the Instant Digest project for the Modifyer blog).

Collision/Detection is the second experimental audio project from Long Division with Remainders (LDWR), following on from the success of '14 Versions of the same EP' (which featured Leyland Kirby and Sone Institute amongst others), and sees invited artists submit audio clips into a central pot, which is then distributed around the group and others to do with as they see fit, resulting in a series of digital EPs released across the year.
The project will feature new and exclusive releases from a host of artists including Sone Institute, Hong Kong in the 60s, Isnaj Dui, The Doomed Bird of Providence, Kemper Norton, BLK Tag (BLK w/BEAR & Tag Cloud) The Lord.

The fourth EP in the Collision/Detection project comes from Hong Kong in the 60s – bringing a unique and inspired vision to the series.

Hong Kong In The 60s are a three-piece electronic pop band from London and Cambridge, who released their debut album, "My Fantoms" in 2011. In the last couple of years, they have also released a collaborative 7" with The Advisory Circle on the Ghost Box label and supported The High Llamas at the South Bank Centre.

The aim with this EP was to adapt the more abstract samples to melodic songform, whilst retaining their essential atmosphere. As the four songs were composed and recorded, a pastoral theme organically emerged, with each track describing a waypoint in an imaginary journey. "Into The Forest Of Eyes" also marks the next installment in the band's ongoing Mouse Opera.
