Playground is releasing a very special compilation to celebrate nine years of life. A musical journey shared with dear friends, which expresses the living history of the label from its origins to the present. From the first illegal raves in Buenos Aires, to becoming an international artist's platform based in Barcelona. A long process of learning, growth and consolidation have passed. Nowadays, with an extensive catalog of more than 40 references Playground has a solid story to tell, always selecting an eclectic criterion and betting on diversity. Each launch reaffirms the commitment with an aesthetic freedom beyond any label.

The '9 Years Compilation' faithfully expresses our history, but above all our present, always with an eye looking to the future. 15 new original tracks carefully chosen to create a polychromatic musical adventure, with diverse nuances and intensities. From downtempo songs to listen at home, through music inspired by the new wave, the creative force of the jungle, the power of organic elements and psychedelic experimentation to the most convincing music for the club.

Newcastle-based DJ and producer Edmondson’s latest offering on Lissoms is packed to the rafters with groovy bass lines and stripped back fun. The four tracker blends his signature sounds with that of some sampled jazz elements that work, oh so well. Our premiere for today is the glow mix of Y2K. Floating pads provide a mellow base for airy whispers and an enveloping melody that swirls around the listener. All while being poked and prodded along by the snappy, upbeat percussion. A proper cosmic groove if you will.

PREMIERE: Edmondson - Y2K (Glow Mix) [Lissoms]

Having appeared on Human Endeavour's inaugural Various Artists release, ‘Trains Of Thought’, Geneva-based DJ and producer Reda Saiarh now steps up to the plate for his first solo EP on the imprint, which showcases his fresh, forward-thinking take on Belgian New Beat.

Drawing inspiration from his Belgo-Moroccan heritage, on ‘Comfort Zone’, he approaches the traditions of the genre with a completely new twist that weaves elements of progressive trance, jackin’ 90s house and Italo disco into the mix, whilst harking back to the heyday with his trusty bank of signature New Beat samples.

‘I’m Not Your Friend’ rounds the EP off on a guttural note, literally. Reda cheekily samples a burp, which is used as a percussive guide alongside tinkling bells and tittering hats, while the track's title rings out over hopeful pads, a soaring metallic synth line and a deep bass groove.

Is it really possible to create without making references ? Feeling inspired without being inspired from the outer space ? With this disc, Tushen Raï comes to reconnect with his first passion, collecting records and falling in love with pieces that have unfairly fallen into oblivion, left behind, lost in the meanders of the musical hyper productivity of the 80s and 90s.
As a tribute to these unlucky melodies : he samples, he reinvents, he reconstructs. Not in the hope of giving them a second life, and without the pretention of changing their destiny. But simply to cherish them, to show them his love and his respect for what they are. As a geographical snub, Tushen Raï chose to invite his neighbors, both producers and friends, to join forces on this trip through Peru, Finland, Italy and France.  A singular record like an ode to curiosity, thought under the sign of sharing and respect.

Ransom Note Records are delighted to welcome back Freelance Disco Consultant and Beat Raconteur, Mr Sean Johnston with 2 (yes, TWO!!!) bumper deal mixes of C.A.R.’s 2023 single ANZU, ricocheting off each other in perfect harmony. Perhaps better known to the rave going public as Hardway Bros or the nourisher of the ALFOS flame, Sean has been a stalwart of the UK underground for over three decades, amounting a truly enviable back catalogue of dance floor destroyers and party pounders.

In true Johnston form, he attacks ANZU from two deadly precise, but separate angles. ANZU (Hardway Bros Remix) is both a four on the floor stomper, but simultaneously a delicate, almost histrionic synth workout. Highlighting Chloe C.A.R.’s beautiful vocals and arpeggios, Sean adds a few of his own trademark flourishes and slings an enormous rhythm section underneath. The bowel quivering bass line only to be outdone by the quake-making kick drum, which take turn in firing low frequency shots into our chest cavities at metered intervals. Duality in the disco!

Not content with dicing ANZU in just that one way, Sean’s also provided Anzu (Hardway Bros Conqueror Knock Dub). With a nod to his musical heritage, this version pulls on sounds from UK Acid House Revolution of the early nineties, with only a fraction of the violence associated with most revolutions. We are, however, coshed over the bonce with all manner of aural weapons: from funky bass guitars, to House Organs and flanged modulations (the insalubrious source of which is not clear), we are pummelled into submission. By which we mean that we are in fact dancing our tits off on the floor, sweating profusely, whistles in mouths with arms in the air.

The situation we’re witnessing in Gaza is heartbreaking. While the world watches, over 30,000 innocent Palestinian people, many of whom were children, have been killed and over 70,000 more injured in attacks since October 7th. Homes, neighbourhoods and cities have been destroyed, and most of the population has been displaced and left without food, clean drinking water, electricity and fuel. 

The UK government has continued to allow Israel’s bombardment in the region and chosen not to back consistent calls for a ceasefire, despite the overwhelming majority of the UK public being in favour.

In an effort to raise money for Palestinian aid charities, I’ve reached out to lots of talented artists who have kindly contributed their music to this incredibly important cause. 

Sonically it traverses chugging electronics, proto electro, Italo dance, UK techno and leftfield bass from artists like JD Twitch, Ambien Baby, Lisene, GoodMostlyBad and Azo, all of whom are joining our call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

All proceeds from the compilation will be split 50/50 between two charities who are working hard to provide support and humanitarian aid in Gaza: Medical Aid Palestine and War Child UK.
