What about an issue of pride? She could have felt as if Adam - and his disability - was a weakness. She may not have wanted to be in an autism group because she wanted her son to be as "normal" as possible, even with autism. Perhaps Adam felt as though she was always trying to change him? Maybe he didnt feel accepted?
