It has been exactly 10 years since Frozen Coco's first single and over seven since those words were uttered on the band's last release. Although none of us imagined we would stick around a decade later, the lyric seems somewhat prescient in hindsight.
If you have heard of Frozen Coco you might simply (in an amazing coincidence) have the titles of two recent Disney films in mind… Or you could be a fan of one of the earliest online rock groups to exist, years before the advent of "Zoom bands" over the pandemic.
During early lockdown last year I revisited some of my writing that was never put to tape, for the sole reason of having something to do. The several Internet music collaborations during quarantine reminded me of us at 14 and made me think, "I've done that gig before" and that it might be interesting to reunite the band.
Some song fragments that had been lying around for years were soon put together and other parts newly written. The lyric draft drifted towards a theme of urgency as it drew upon various things that were happening around me and life in general at the time. Other lines were nicked out of a couple of poems I had written, complete with a not-so-subtle Neil Young reference.
By the time the demo was shared with the rest of the band the song had about 20 chords. Bastián was enthused and turned in a groovy bass performance I am immensely proud of, while Matt was up to the task of learning the song on piano. To complete the line-up we had returning guest singer and "honorary Coco" Mari on backing vocal duties.
With members currently situated in the UK, Chile and the USA, it was nice to hear after all these years what we could make with a bunch of lo-fi, garage band style recording setups. The single was recorded and slated for late 2020 but being tied up with university studies meant that this was pushed back for the 10 year anniversary of our first release. The song's sentiments generally do seem to hold up even in 2021.
Whether you know us from the old days or have newly discovered the band, thank you for taking the time to listen to our music. This has been a pleasant distraction from our respective day jobs and that does not mean Frozen Coco has to stop here: Among some of the songs I revisited was the entirety of our unreleased second album, most of which I was pleasantly surprised to find was near completion. That would make a delightful and quick project for another time.

Second Roll of the Dice

After over eight months of much toil over the creation of Frozen Coco’s debut album plus various other academic and extra-curricular preoccupations, my third single is finally out! The initial conception for the song’s tune came back in May when I received my brand new Les Paul with which I recorded the guitar tracks shortly afterwards. The overdubs of drums, electric bass and vocals were done much later due to the hectic schedule of my final year at school prior to graduation. As is the intention of my solo career, the song digresses immensely from the style of its predecessors, “Rock Nomad” and “Gold Ringers”, cultivating a more guitar oriented sound with catchy bass fills and delicate drum rolls. I hope you relish this track since it is likely to be my last release for 2013 which has indeed been an exceptional year musically!

When Every Element Dies

Coming under three months of my previous single’s release, “Waiting for the Sun to Come” is a folk song that discusses someone who is caught between a dreamer and a realist. It started out as an evening jam back in summer 2013, and the song was written and fully recorded within one day; the mixing process, however, was prolonged due to my focus on mixing and mastering other songs for my upcoming triple record. After a bit of fine-tuning on the mix, a few tweaks and a bit of EQ, I’m glad to share this song with all of you. This is my first single after the break-up of Frozen Coco, and I plan to devote all my music plans to my solo career only from now on, which means the forty-or-so songs in my album should be completed quicker than ever. Following the success of my previous single that received radio airplay, “Put It in Your Head” is more of a return to slightly harder edged rock. The song deals with a failing relationship represented in the image of a band, and is essentially about moving out and starting life on one’s own. It was composed and recorded earlier this year in March, and was thereafter left in the production process for a while. This song was released to coincide with the three year anniversary of Frozen Coco’s first single. One more single from the triple album will be released soon, just before the record comes out, so stay tuned for that!

Put It in Your Head

It has been over 18 months since my last release, but I am back (albeit for the final time under the “Diyath Yavin” moniker) with my sixth single. Despite a seemingly dormant 2015, much preparatory work was organised with regard to assembling a band during the course of last year. In addition, around three albums’ worth of recorded songs have been temporarily shelved pending imminent further development on subsequent professional projects.

That being said, “Just Like the Marshal Said” is a relatively early songwriting attempt of mine centring on a young bloke’s dreams of making the big time. Wherever possible, I have tried to remain faithful to the lyrics and structure of the originally taped demo from a couple of years ago, which imparts a sound reminiscent to that of my initial recordings. Thank you for all the support I have received from the time I started my solo career way back in 2012 and peace out!

Just Like the Marshal Said

'Out of the Possible' is an original by Bastián Núñez, a monologue of a socially inept and insecure person. During its production, the song underwent several working names. After finally settling upon decent lyrics, the band set out to record. The result is a single that provides a smooth transition between their last EP venture and some of the band's better work to come.

Out of the Possible

Here it is, the debut solo single of Frozen Coco's Diyath Yavin, released 30/11/2012! The song idea all started out with a basic piano opening riff (no piano track made it to the final cut, it was replaced by guitar). Hours spent on what would become my solo debut single has led to an upbeat rock number, with plenty of lead guitar licks and a rather raucous vocal track. "Rock Nomad" is, at its essence, any hard rock musician's typical rock song... not that I would classify myself as entirely a rock composer anyway. Some of the lyrics are vaguely based off real life experiences and largely talk about a rock wanderer's dreams, thus the arrival at the title. This is completely home-produced and recorded; the rough quality of the mixing is intended to create the raw feel of a classic Rock N' Roll record. A big thanks goes to my awesome Frozen Coco buddy and amazing bassist, Bastián Nuñez for covering the department he does best on this track. All other instruments (save for drums which is a loop), composition, arrangement and lyrics are done by me. That said, hope you all enjoy the music!

Rock Nomad

To all, I give you my second solo single! ‘Gold Ringers’ is a country number I wrote back a couple of years ago and the structure has changed quite a bit (as is with most of my old song ideas). It has transformed from the originally intended folk song it was to my first recorded country song. Even the instrument solo on this track was initially played to the style of folk guitar but was later changed to piano. All the instrument parts are played entirely by me in this solo venture. Enjoy!

Gold Ringers

Frozen Coco is a rock band that was formed on June 23, 2011. It is a purely online collaboration between Diyath Yavin (various instruments), Bastián Núñez (electric bass) and Matt Hambra (guitar) who are currently situated in the UK, Chile and the USA.

Since its inception, Frozen Coco has released eight singles, an EP, and a full-length album over their period of existence of over 10 years. The band had worked on a second studio album, on which they planned to incorporate multiple instrument overdubs and several orchestral arrangements, in contrast to their previous work.

However, following their disintegration, the project was abandoned until the band recently reunited for their 10 year anniversary. This project is currently on hold.
