Paul Oakenfold - Radio 1 Essential Mix, The Goa Mix 18-12-1994

In honor of the upcoming inauguration of the first woman Vice President of the United States of America Kamala Devi Harris, Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy, and for my wife really giving it her all these past few weeks, I made an eclectic mix of music. It clocks in at just over 40 minutes, so it’s not too short but not too long. 

My wife bought a movie for me about Rodriguez and I loved it so much I purchased the album. Hence, the mix starts off in good old Rodriguez fashion with his world-famous 1970 classic Sugar Man, setting the stage for the first few tracks. Next, and I have to thank my wife again here as she put me on to Atif Aslam, who is one of the most successful Bollywood playback singers of all time, and has a lot of haters in the Bollywood playback community. Say what you want about him, but he has one of the most soulful voices I’ve ever heard, and I had to play his entire 8 minute track recorded live out here in this mix. Up next is a surprising choice for me but when you listen to this track by Purnash you’ll actually listen to how electronic it is! Not to mention it’s perfect production quality at 103bpm,…and that voice! Purnash’s music can be listened to over and over again, and this track shows why. Up next is a track I heard while taking the bus to Albany when my wife used to intern at DOT. It’s the ambient version which sets up the next track, the classic Jump Up by Major Lazer, but remixed by Radiohead frontman and musical-Jesus-walking-on-Earth Thom Yorke. From there, I get into my groove and do my thing with so I won’t say much about the rest of the mix other than I always wanted to mix Donna Summer, and was so happy to! Thank you Aminta for all the years of showing me what it means to be a true public servant - all my love to you always.
