FSQ, an acronym for Funk, Style, Quality, is comprised of Chuck "Da Fonk" Fishman, Sa´D "The Hourchild" Ali, Matt “One Era” Coogan, and Chas Bronz. Each member of this quintet derives from a deep musical background.

Chuck Da Fonk toured and recorded with George Clinton & Parliament - Funkadelic in the mid nineties. The Hourchild is equal parts hype-man as he is discographer, having cut his teeth in the nineties servicing Tommy Boy’s record pool. The Hourchild is also George Clinton’s nephew who looked after a young Chuck back in the day.  Philly-based Matt Coogan “One Era” is a talented multi-instrumentalist and producer. Rounding out this diverse crew, Chas Bronz, is most known for his talents behind the decks and on the guitar, as well as a slew of other instruments.

Winter 2014 brought about FSQ’s first release on Soul Clap records, the "Zulu Congo Call” EP. In addition to working on new productions, FSQ continues to remix other artists’ works in their signature style of Northern Soul and Caribbean Disco. 

Description of the Mix:

This is a journey through funk classics, Caribbean dubs, and rare remixes of new wave gems. Some of today's best new sounds creep in. "Sometimes you hear a new track that you know borrows from a classic and they didn't do a sample specifically, but you know it's calling out another funk jam," says FSQ's Sa'd "The Hourchild" Ali, "and FSQ is one of the few DJ teams that is going to be able to hear that and put the pieces together". That's why in this mix you'll find Dirtybird's Justin Jay right along side Philly funkers The Fatback Band, or Nick Monaco nudged up against The Art of Noise. 

We've dropped some exclusives here - like Michael The Lion - who has an EP coming out on Soul Clap Records - and some of our own FSQ remix work for the label. 

Also there's a heavy component that delves into the Caribbean sound, including a rare nugget from the legendary Barbados house band, The Coach House Rhythm Section. 

New wave is a style constant for FSQ. "There are certain new wave songs from my youth I'll always throw in an FSQ set," says Chuck Da Fonk, “...but the great thing is that these songs came out in the 80's with 10 different remixes, so you'll never hear the same version twice. For instance, Yello's "Call It Love" had four different 12" maxi singles, plus a CD maxi single, and cassette single at the time of release and like Pokemon, we had to catch em all."

We first heard Life on Planets perform live at WMC in 2015 at the Freehand Hotel in Miami. When we heard "Cold Front" we new we wanted to work with it as it has a bubbly bass synth that kicks in with a sinister bass line and all other kinds of cool elements. The "S" in FSQ stands for "style" and we like to apply various musical styles to our remix work. We reached out to Life on Planets and got the session and went to work.

Billy Bass Nelson is one of the founders of Funkadelic (he even coined the term) which got started way back in 1969. 

FSQ had the opportunity to get a session in with Billy Bass in May 2015, and we brought him to Williamsburg to Dave Robertson's (Cameo Culture)'s studio. We pulled up the Life on Planets session since it needed work, and Billy just it took over. The vibes were thick in the little basement room as he laid down bass and multiple tracks of guitars.  

What most people do not realize about Billy Bass Nelson is that he had a productive career after leaving Funkadelic full time in 1972 and is on so many disco funk hits that are played heavily today. 

His work beyond Funkadelic includes productions for The Commodores, The Temptations, Rose Banks (Sly Stone's sister), Jermaine Jackson, Lenny Williams, Alton McLain & Destiny and Smokey Robinson. 

Many of Billy's LA disco sessions were also joined by Funkadelic guitarist Eddie Hazel and Sly Stone himself, not credited, but instead Sly went under the name Jimmy Ford (a joke, the president who took over from Nixon). 

The FSQ Billy Bass Funkadelic dub version of Life on Planets "Cold Front" marks the first time Billy's been heard on a record since his 1995 solo record. We made a YouTube playlist of Billy's post Funkadelic disco-funk works here, and we think you'll be able to link his distinct sound on these cuts, to what you will hear in the new FSQ dub we did for Life on Planets.

During the Billy Bass session on "Cold Front", Billy remarked that LOP vocalist Phil Jenkins sounds a bit like Tyrone Davis. 

Tyrone Davis is a famous northern soul singer, known for his hit "Turn Back the Hands of Time". Ironically, we heard the very same thing with Phil, so we created an alternate remix of "Cold Front" with deep northern soul stylings including lush guitars, organs, melodica, and a driving northern soul beat. FSQ's GKoop played a big part in revising the song for this style which we often produce in (we did a northern soul remix for Nick Monaco in 2014). Violinist Lauren Avery guests here, recording over 25 tracks of strings to give the remix a fully orchestrated sound that you hear on many northern soul records.

Another Discobelle premiere, this time the awesome NYC outfit known as @fsqofficial (Funk Style Quality) delivers a Caribbean disco tinged remix and breathes new life with the aid of a warm sounding, late night disco atmosphere and funked up horns to the track "Giving Up On You" from Jamaican artist @davidmarstonja. 

The remix is part of the remix package to last years much lauded "Kindness of Bearer" EP (released on @soulclaprecs) which captured the laidback atmosphere of David Marstons island home.

In late 2015 FSQ got a first listen to the new Crew Love album "Based on a True Story" and we were already in love with two tracks from that - "Unprotected Ex" and "Smokers Delight". 

We had the idea of getting with Bobby Eli, guitarist from Philadelphia International Records / Sigma Sound to do a real extended medley disco mix like Tom Moulton would do. Tom Moulton is the first producer to string together multiple songs on a LP in a non stop continuous disco mix - he first did this with Gloria Gaynor and then Grace Jones.  

Bobby is a friend of Nona Hendryx, and she said he should be our go to do guitar on the mix. He worked with Tom Moulton a lot on that real Philly sound. Both FSQ's One Era and Chuck Da Fonk are from Philly and have a real love for the lush disco sounds, replete with full orchestral string sections. 

One Era and Chuck put together a 9 minute backing track that mashed up "Unprotected Ex" and "Smokers Delight" to give to Bobby Eli. The work on this with Bobby didn't materialize, so we turned to FSQ's GKoop, to add strings to our extended mix. 

So about the time we went to cut strings with GKoop, we started to get to listen to the upcoming, and now released Soul Clap self titled album. We thought to take the Tom Moulton mix idea a bit further into the eighties, when popular new wave artists would offer a not just a continuous LP mix, but a full 12" mix of a medley of songs. 

Using new sampling technology, making medley mixes became easier in the nineteen eighties - you could cut up small snippets of your catalog, sample them and place them in with drum machines.

Hip Hop producer Steinski did this kind of work with Double Dee in a series of hip hop greatest hit medleys that were known as "The Lesson". 

Even Duran Duran got in the action - their medley 12" was called "Decadance". Our favorite 12" medley is by Yello. The swiss electronic funk group turned in two 12" mixes compiling highlights from their catalog titled "The Metropolitan Mixdown I and II". 

GKoop and Chuck Da Fonk went to work to make this mix into an 80s styled medley extended mix, assembling components of the new Soul Clap album into the Crew Love extended track they had started on. 

First GKoop brought in Bay Area drummer and rapper OMAYGA to add some intricate disco styled drums to the track. OMAYGA last worked with FSQ on their remix for Navid Izadi's "Hard to Say". 

Then over the new disco beat, GKoop laid into the tracks from the new Soul Clap album and did a lot of heavy lifting to figure out what could go where in our extended mix. 

Together we added a lot of new bass work and transitions to come up with the layout for the track, which we now called "Ex Smokers (The FSQ Suite)" to reflect the original mash up of "Smokers Delight" and "Unprotected Ex".

Bay Area based Shaina Evoniuk, who leads the string section for the renowned Jazz Mafia, and New York based Benjamin Wright, who writes music for LouisCK TV program among other television work, finally got on the track. Shaina and Benjamin provided the disco strings that we were craving to tie segments of the megamix together. 

After a year of production work, FSQ is proud to present to you the twelve minute and thirty second suite, "Ex Smokers" with Soul Clap featuring Crew Love.

cHUCk dA fONk here. I just came out of the studio putting down more on a track here from fONKSQUISh and jazz icon Prince Lasha ( who you may know from his work with Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Sonny Simmons, Ornette Coleman and more ).

The song is called "Congo Calling Revisited (Short Prince Lasha Edit)". It is a reinterpretation of Prince Lasha / Sonny Simmons' song "Congo Call" from the album "The Cry!" (1962):

@Mike2600 :  His company Burlesque of North America is a top tier design studio, known mostly for their cutting edge screen printing. At SXSW 2010, the team decided to do another installment of their Do It To It series. The compilation features a fONKSQUISh track shown here.

This installment continues the tradition of big name artists with the likes of Amanda Blank, DJ Ayres, Nick Catchdubs, Emynd, White Girl Lust.

The compilation was given away at SXSW at the Burlesque event in 2010. The packaging showcased the screening styles of the design camp. 

Also included on the CD was Pumpkin Patch's long awaited dance floor destroyer Doobie Bras, Skinny Friedman's infectiously funky Who Dat as well as DJ Apt One's collaboration with P-Funk bassist Billy Bass Nelson and fONKSQUISh, the funky house groove PLANETS (here on the page).

" For our sixteenth mix for Paradise ULTD we became a bit less focused on our favorite record labels and a bit more artist focused. 

That's not to say we don't wind up representing some of our favorite record labels in this edition. For instance Soul Clap Records, Crew Love Records, Bastard Jazz Records, Boogie Angst, Glitterbox Recordings all have entries from their artist rosters in FSQ Selections 16. 

Related - David Marston - a long time Soul Clap and Crew Love stalwart - makes his debut on heavy dance music hitter Ultra Records with his DejaVilla project. DejaVilla includes vocalist and fellow Jamaican Sarah Couch. 

One of our close friends jokes that sometimes in our FSQ DJ sets we skip all music with words and lyrics !! Well for this mix we found plenty of love for big vocalists - including that sultry cut "Running Away" by DejaVilla; modern funk and nudisco producer Moods' big single "Get To Know You" featuring British chanteuse Pip Millet, and vocalist Adeline who offers up her self released, self titled debut album. Most would know Adeline as Adeline Michele - the lead vocalist of the NY based disco troop Escort. Atlantic Records R&B star Lizzo deserves a turn in this mix too because her new funk laden single "Juice" is indeed so juicy!

Like our friend said about FSQ selections, yes yes, we do lean into instrumental disco edits and left field funky house originals - all without any words at all on these jams. So yes we flip flop around in this mix and do turn right back into the instrumental zone. One instrumental discovery in this mix that came from somewhere - who knows, not a record label - is the self released French jazz house production team simply called HS. HS are also two multi instrumentalists - Herson and Seven - we've included two tracks from HS here; the title track "Mu" from their EP, which is led by brilliant original saxophone lines, and the other "French Riviera" which is all about jazz bass solos over house beats. 

Still on the instrumental front - this mix chugs on with Peter Matson of the NY based afrodisco group Underground System. He debuts solo with "Roma Norte" a real deep house burner on Bastard Jazz. Also his group gets the high energy dub treatment by German producer Gerd Janson on his remix of their "Just a Place" via Soul Clap Records. 

Limpodisco's "Heatwave Affair" - we have no idea where this boogie funk tinged new wave instrumental comes from or if it's even been properly released yet, but it's been a secret weapon in all of our FSQ sets the past several months. We love Limpodisco for both their disco edit work and original production which land squarely on the nudisco front. They hail from Odessa, Ukraine. 

Keep listening to the mix as we zig zag between even more vocal led R&B and nudisco jams and back to deep house instrumentals; FSQ Selections 16 is one of the most favorite mixes we have ever delivered to Paradise ULTD. Full tracklist follows .."  - Chuck Da Fonq

US based production team Funk Style Quality, aka FSQ, link with legendary funk and soul vocalist Dolette McDonald to put their own spin on the Talking Heads track 'I Zimbra', flipping the iconic track into a bumping dancefloor anthem.

“Dolette brought so much life to our original song ‘Shaking My Damn Head’ that we wanted to bring her out on the road with FSQ to perform the song,” explains Chuck Da Fonk Fishman of FSQ. “But we needed more material for her to perform with us. One song that stood out was the Talking Heads ‘I Zimbra’ because she performed it so well on all that early concert footage of the group. Most notably Dolette commands that song in the 1980 film ‘Live in Rome’. There was no instrumental version of ‘I Zimbra’ for Dolette to sing over, so FSQ went in the studio and we cut our own version”.

'I Zimbra', which comes complete with remixes by Soul Clap and Alan Dixon, is set for release March 18 via Midnight Riot Records.

"FSQ Selections edition 17 for Paradise ULTD focuses again on some of our favorite independent dance music record labels.

Midnight Riot Records is a label FSQ has been working with for a few years now, and we are proud to have released our Talking Heads cover of "I Zimbra" featuring Dolette McDonald on the label. 

Midnight Riot is so hot right now we can't keep up with the amount of promo they are sending us. One of our favorite projects they've got right now is Jaegerossa with the Midnight Riot label boss and uber nudisco producer, Yam Who. On mix 17 we play two joyous cuts from the duo, "Grateful" and "Delirium" which are both helmed by vocalist Jacqi George. 

Also on Midnight Riot is the sleek 80s inspired jam called "Dreaming" by Nick Reach Up featuring soulful UK vocalist Jazz Morley. Our friend Birdee also turns a new album for ISM Records - a sister record label in the Midnight Riot Records family; we chose the nudisco burner "Give Into Love" featuring Chloe Amber from Birdee's album. 

Soul Clap is in the mix month debuting their two sider on their new record label - House of EFunk Records. The aptly titled "Jupiter Crush" is a Roland synth laden cut that we put in the mix. 

We can't escape the Wurlitzer - Fender Rhodes sunset house vibes of Session Victim and we feature a remix they did for Goddard and then a cut from their new Delusions of Grandeur records EP. 

Hobo Camp brings us a new EP from the always wonderful Social Lovers; the midnight flavored jam "The Light" is our choice here.

Finally don't miss legend Fonda Rae with her turn signing the hook on Escort's new jam "City Life". Nicki B is Escort's new vocalist, which means Adeline, the former singer from Escort has gone solo. Escort's JKriv rejoins Adeline for a remix of her song "Before".

As per usual this time of year as we head into fall, we look back and review our favorite summer Balearic releases, and in fact we offer a special mini set within the mix of these slow motion emotional tunes.

George Clinton's nephew Sa'd 'The Hourchild' Ali (Sa'D Ali) and Chuck ‘Da Fonk’ Fishman met in the mid-’90s as touring members of George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. With the addition of 8-time Grammy-nominated producer G Koop the trio became FSQ, a production team committed to creating original funk of supreme quality.

In the years to follow, Boston-based guitarist Chas Bronz, Philadelphia drummer One Era, and New York audio engineer Morgan Wiley joined FSQ. You’ll find the majority of their original songs and remixes on Soul Clap Records along with FSQ’s 2020 Reprise Tonight - the group’s debut LP. Presented as a tale of having one last party in the span of 24 hours,  features guest appearances from funk royalty, including George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Nona Hendryx, Fonda Rae, Denise King, and Dolette McDonald. In 2022, FSQ released a funked-up remix album for their debut record, aptly titled Reprise Reprise Tonight. This jam-packed album features 16 remix turns on the OG cuts by Tom Moulton, Ray Mang, Birdee, DJ Rocca, Lee Curtiss + more.
