Male Mottled Grasshopper courting a female in a terrarium. Long series of 0.03 sec 'ticks' before proceeding to typical calling song. (at 20.6°C ambient room temp, in direct sun at max of 31.3°C).

Calling song/stridulation from a male Speckled Bush-cricket in a vivarium.
A single (occasionally double), quiet element repeated every 2-4 seconds. Normally I can't hear this species outside in the natural environment, but I could inside when I transferred this male (which was attracted to the light of my moth trap) to a tank. Recorded using a normal microphones (frequency range 20 Hz to 20 kHz). Called 758 times in a 60 minute recording period.

Speckled Bush-cricket (Leptophyes punctatissima)

Calling song/stridulation from a male Sickle-bearing Bush-cricket (Phaneroptera falcata) in calcareous grassland on chalk downland at 22°C. A single, faint, largely ultrasonic element/syllable repeated every 1.2 to 1.8 seconds. Mostly inaudible to my ears, except at very close range with microphone right next to the insect (much louder with bat detector set to 20 kHz). Long series lasting several minutes often preceded by an echeme of around 16 syllables at a rate of 8/sec (80-90 ms per syllable).

Sonogram of calling song/stridulation from two captive bred field crickets, either Gryllus assimilis or G. jamaicensis (latter seems more likely based on dominant frequency of 4.6 to 5.6 kHz). Sold as 'Silent Cricket'.

Each chirp composed of 2-6 pulses. Recorded at 20.7°C ambient room temperature.

A repetitive series of chirps (4-5/sec), each with 2-3 pulses, around 6 kHz, at 20.3°C ambient room temperature.

Indoor recording in terrarium of calling the song/stridulation from a captive bred G. bimaculatus (sold as 'Black Cricket').
Each echeme composed of 2-6 syllables with the dominant frequencies between 4.0 and 4.5 kHz. Recorded at 20.5°C ambient room temperature.

Alarm calls from an adult Alpine Marmot close to a network of burrows.
Short, piercing, bird-like sounds, repeated in a bout of multiple whistles, no doubt in response to my presence.

Calling song from males in heathland bordering oak woodland.
A series of high-pitched clicks, similar to Common Green Grasshopper but overall lower frequency, with 17-18 elements/sec at ~21°C in strophes of 5-10 seconds. Usually begining quietly and increasing in volume before ending abruptly.

Calling song/stridulation from a male in roadside verge grassland.
A rasping ticking in echeme-sequences of up to four seconds with ~18 elements/sec at ~25°C. Begining quietly but quickly increasing in volume before ending abruptly. Main audible range between 4 and 10 kHz.

Drumming from a single captive male in a terrarium at night.
A series of 3-8 abrupt (100ms), low frequency sounds (0.1-1.4 kHz) produced from the male tapping its hind leg on Ivy leaves in the presence of a female. At peak activity it produced 11 drumming bursts in one minute (at 25.1°C ambient room temp). Drumming bursts lasting between 0.8 and 3.6 secs.
Note: the volume here has been increased in the processed sound file, but the tapping was actually audible across the room under near-silent conditions.

A single, quiet, ultrasonic element repeated every 4-5 seconds. Largely inaudible to my ears, this individual was recorded using heterodyne bat detector set to 40 kHz which transforms the sound into a loud audible tap.

A rapid, high-pitched hissing produced in very long bursts (up to 9 minutes without a break), interspersed with quieter 'half-speed' ticking sections, like the free-wheel of a bicycle (at 25.42°C ambient room temp, no heat lamp or direct sun).

A short (1.0-1.4 sec) fast rattle which begins and ends fairly abruptly, repeated every 5 secs or so, interspersed with occasional shorter 3-4 element rattles (at 25.4°C ambient room temp, no heat lamp or direct sun).

A complex mix of stridulations consisting of repeated cycles (up to 27 sec) of very soft hissing interspersed with louder rasps, ending with lower-frequency ticking (at 25.42°C ambient room temp, no heat lamp or direct sun).

Calling song/stridulation from a male Grey Bush-cricket in low dune marram grassland close to the shoreline.
A long sequence of high-pitched echemes, consisting of two per second at 18°C. Each echeme consisting of 3-5 syllables, mostly 4). Largely inaudible to my ears, a bat detector set at 30kHz was essential in locating this cryptic orthopteran.
