Frontline workers make up 80% of the world’s workforce (some 2.7 billion of the global working population), yet these jobs that require presence are often forgotten in discussions about work-life balance, employee experience and benefits. This seems more absurd when we consider that these workers – from healthcare professionals to grocery store employees and delivery drivers – have been the lifeblood of our economy over the past year-and-a-half, selflessly putting their own health at risk in the process.

Part and parcel of this is underpinned by the fact 76% of frontline and essential workers who say they don’t have the ability to provide feedback to their headquarters (according to LumApps). But there’s also a new challenge bubbling beneath the surface: burnout. Discussions of burnout often seem to be centred on occupations associated with a certain socioeconomic level. However, you don’t often hear of cleaners, or supermarket workers (etc) as being burned out, even though their work is often objectively harder. They basically don't have the luxury to talk about burnout.

This has to change – and HR leaders must be the ones to enact it. Some 80% of leaders agree, stating how they believe that empowering frontline employees is critical to long-term business strategy.
