DISSIDENT #009 - Miss Twink USA Live

Rafael Capetini is traveling without moving. Barangandão is the name of a toy of African origin used in dances that blend the artist's exploration of psychedelia found in the drumming of Carnival with the bittersweet feeling that is neither happy nor sad, embodying the essence of the word "saudade," which is challenging to explain to foreigners.

As a DJ, he is well-known for his unique mix, blending rhythms from different continents (and new to whom?). Mixing with the lowest frequencies of the spectrum and inviting you to the cavernous school of Dub, Capetini manages, with this single, to create a new business card that showcases all of its culture and originality. With each passing day, the boundaries between their sets and productions become more blurred. With “Barangandã,” the distinction between play and toy is also set aside, both on and off the dance floor.

Mix 0025 comes from Cherriel, Detroit's Mixtress of Chaos.

Within the depths of Detroit's queer underground scene, Cherriel's presence embodies the feminine journey both physically and virtually. Inspired by end-of-world freedom exhales, sound design of PS2 era survival horror and JRPGs, digital hardcore, industrial undertones, as well as avant-garde no wave and electroclash, she weaves together a myriad of influences into a sonic tapestry. Cherriel's sonichemy beckons listeners to explore uncharted territories of electronic exploration as she channels her sound spells to summon catharsis on the dancefloor.

This mix breaks everything apart and puts it all back together again through red-colored and fiery techno, electro, and industrial sounds. Femme vocals will accompany you in your journey through the graveyard as you listen, with an emphasis on feminine power.

From the artist:
For this mix, I drew inspiration from recent curations and motifs engendered at gigs and studio time as well as arcane music selections exchanged between friends, acting as a conveyance and narrator of lived experience. I would say this mixfile represents halcyon days, caliginous recesses, neural rewiring and the transmogrification of self that occurs with awakenings, especially with the acoustic rage room vibe where modulated feminine voices, arpeggiated synths, and techno-electro sleaze nostalgia coalesce.

o•rbyss aims to help soothe the queer spectrum and focus on the well-being of the community. Queer DJs are invited to submit a mix to showcase an alternative side to their music library outside of a rave and take us on a meditative journey. ✨

Notes on the mix:

"When I moved out of my hometown for my studies, I started seeking out professional help with my mental health which has helped me a lot. One of the things that really stuck with me during a session with my therapist was when I was particularly sad about having to grow up quickly and the sense of partly losing my childhood; my therapist asked me what I would say to my younger self if I had the chance.

With this mix, I want to embody the reply I gave her:
You matter. Your feelings matter. 
You are strong, you are brave, you are smart, you are kind, and you are beautiful.
You deserve to take up space and you deserve to take your time.

For this mix, I chose a lot of nostalgia-inducing tracks, and made a blend of lullaby-esque melodies, dreamy vocals, and sounds of hopefulness and optimistic looks towards the future.

Here's to those of us healing our inner child. 
Hug them for me."

Ambu Bambu is a DJ/producer and programmer at Relate Radio, based in Groningen, the Netherlands. With breakbeat, electro, and percussive experimentalism, they will take you on a bouncy journey through electronic broken rhythms with musical nods to their Chinese heritage.
