“Functory 03” is a manifesto for nobody; it is teenage spirits growing up wildly in the chaotic jungles of the internet. It also resonates with the absurdity of us living days as if they were years, in a time where everything changes on the scale of minutes.

FunctionLab’s distorted drum sounds faster and heavier in 2018~2019. After that, it directly entered a new starting point. In the "collective rebellion" of club music, it is more rebellious to return to a more inner essence of the sound - a form of more functional experimental music. GUAN’s powerful hymn, Yikii’s frenetic release, and the Generation X tear-worthy piece by Laughing Ears are the emotional support of this compilation. Zean, Akito, GG Lobster, Xhankonkon and Bela offer enough energy to start a fire on the dance floor. And with Mr.Peña, XOXO Miro, Mice and Kieran Loftus as other core forces, the BPM is climbs to over 150 while balancing weirdness and sensitivity.

In the process of selecting songs, there was no intention of approaching or circumventing genres popular in the current scene such as Trance and Gabber, although there are some producers who are very good at producing these styles in this compilation. Under multi-threading free choice, everyone contributed to this compilation had managed to achieve a very FunctionLab “flavour”, very personal yet removed from expressions of the self.

Mourning or shouting, the 75 species that are extinct every day in the world; celebrities that are knocked off their pedestal, and the ever-changing musical style of the club scene. Everything happens at the right time, and you can't refute it even if you think it's unreasonable. Just like the Music video of the ending track Laughing Ears - Polymorphic Reality, directed by Cheng Ran shows: The pigeons are flying in the flash of fire, but they still can't live without the house. If grief makes sense, do we have to dance? If dance makes sense, what else do we have to grief about?

Zaumne's new album titled Élévation is a multifaceted yet subtle work, an abstract collage that is equally entrancing and immersive. Quoting passages from Baudelaire’s “Flowers of Evil”, the Polish musician promises to elevate the soul and consciousness “Beyond the sun / Beyond the ether”. Yet simultaneously, the artist wants us to stay where we are and focus on the immediate surroundings in search of our personal attachment to the world.

Initially recorded for the WET (Weird Erotic Tension) online community the four pieces are an exploration of erotic aspects of the environment and uncanny intimacy with other beings and objects that dwell in our nearest proximity. Just like on previous releases for labels like Czaszka Rec. or Perfect Aesthetics, on Élévation Zaumne maintains his interest in emotional aspects of sound and internet culture – he builds his compositions from fragments of ASMR-whispered poetry, samples of natural phenomena and field recordings from his family home and its environ.

What starts as an escapist exercise driven by uneasiness and ennui becomes an individual healing process, in which the subject rediscovers the strangely intimate relationship with the world and opens up to almost magical methods of communicating with other beings. ASMR samples and sounds of the artist touching, playing with and exciting different objects are an experiment in establishing contact with the non-human realm and a method of attuning the body and the mind to the reality in which everything is interconnected.

Zaumne tests Einstein’s “spooky action at a distance” through radical, sensual intimacy with what’s near, finding a glimpse of the absolute in his own room, again quoting Baudelaire: “To a child who is fond of maps and engravings / The universe is the size of his immense hunger”. Sueuga (she/her) @sueuga is a Mexican artist, DJ, and producer known for her releases on pivotal labels such as NAAFI, Hiedrah, Salviatek, Sacrilejio, Soul Feeder, Arboretum, and Precious Metals among others. Now based in Amsterdam but raised in Oakland, California where she started her music career by collaborating with artists from the Neoperreo scene, Sueuga has been an important actress in the contemporary scene thanks to her experimental, mutant club outings primarily inspired by industrial music and dominated by unsettling atmospheres, ferocious drums, and abrasive textures.
