This is where modern music began.  At the beginning of the disco era, the style started off as a fusion between the popular rock, funk and latin music of the late 60's that translated well into songs fit for play at night clubs.  Disco became the style to make wide use of synthesizers.  In 1979, the Disco Demolition Derby would be the disco's height of popularity.  Advances in synthesizers would turn disco into electro funk and eventually techno.  At the end of the era, disco DJ's advanced their emceeing into post-disco rap of 1979-1983 which of course gave way to hip hop.
