I recently became a father to my perfect new daughter Aria, and I have written a collection of songs to sum up my journey in preparing to become the dad I've always wanted to be. I thought I would take this opportunity to share a bit of that journey for context.
Since we learned my wife was pregnant everything in my head began to take a shift. My priorities, outlook on the world, and purpose in my life now meant something entirely different to anything I had experienced before.
Naturally there was excitement, and a healthy dose of anxiety, along with a powerful feeling of destiny to contemplate - strong emotions and thoughts that I really had no way to process, so I began writing music again for the first time in years.
This time it's coming from a place that feels more sincere and honest than ever, and I've focused on my strengths in writing with what I know and feel, rather than trying to conform to any one style/idea/trying to aim for a specific sound or with really any other outset than to enjoy the process.
Originally they were meant only for my ears and those close to me, but I've ended up being really proud of the results and decided to share!
The EP will consist of 4 songs, exploring a range of themes and styles. We have some funky grooves, electronic trance, jazz ballad, and a Scottish traditional-esque style tune too.
The main focus is the title track, dedicated to my daughter, and a supporting ballad written as an improvised thank-you note to my wife for the endurance run that was her pregnancy. The other tracks describe a journey of the emotions I felt through the seasons, focusing on the fun and joyful moments, and also giving space to the darker, more daunting emotions that shaped the lessons and hard truths I needed to learn before I met Aria for the first time.
It's been a crazy time of my life and there's an insane amount of time and effort and soul put into the creation of these along the way. It's been a real source of therapy for me and the process has inspired me hugely.
I hope you take the time to listen if you can, and hopefully you might be able to pick out some of the feelings I have written about!
