Ad Astra

February 17 will mark the fifth anniversary of Andrew Weatherall’s tragic death. Three days before that, Material Music will release A Love from Outer Space, a compilation compiled and mixed by  Sean Johnston, who DJed and ran the A Love from Outer Space club night with Weatherall. It features 19 songs that capture the essence of the club night, many of them exclusive. I spoke to Sean about the new album, about London 88 Acid House madness, 122 BPM limits, all-time ALFOS anthems and DJing at ALFOS days after Weatherall’s passing. I hope you enjoy it. Dub techno is sometimes produced with vocals resulting in surprinsingly good results more than often. I ve selected 25 tracks which features vocalists (and some vocal samples) like Paul St-Hilaire and Benji. This is slowly meandering spacedub with deep, peaceful and dreamy lush ambient pads and dubby basslines. Though the old Rhythm & Sound influence is still clear—especially on the track Child was I—but what these producers are making truly feels fresh.

The Vocalists of Dub Techno

Freedom 7, or Mercury-Redstone 3, was the first United States human spaceflight, on May 5, 1961, piloted by astronaut Alan Shepard. Three weeks earlier, op April 12 1961, Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin had made his historic single orbit around Earth. so Shephard was the second human to travel into space. Ten years later, in 1971, he became the fifth person to walk on the moon, at age 47, during the Apollo 14-mission.

SAFE LANDING (The Closing Track)

The city, enveloped in grey-blue twilight, gradually sinks into silence. Panel buildings, like giants, tower over the street, illuminated by the dim light of streetlamps. The first snowflakes, like fluff from a celestial blanket, dance in the faint glow of the streetlights. They fall onto the damp asphalt, melting instantly and leaving behind a thin, icy trace.

With each falling snowflake, the city grows ever quieter. The sounds of cars, the hum of people – everything gradually fades, muffled by the gentle hush of the falling snow. It brings back memories of that very first snow from childhood, when the world seemed infinitely vast and magical. The first winter at school, ice slides, snow forts, snowball fights.

Childhood dreams and a unique, innocent joy. A warmth in the heart. A sweet and gentle melancholy. A sadness that time cannot be stopped, that childhood is gone, but the magic of the first snow remains in our souls forever.
