On 'What Will We Do', Lula Wiles channel infectious energy and bold insight into music that strikes with purpose. Songs of Our Native Daughters shines new light on African-American women’s stories of struggle, resistance, and hope. Pulling from and inspired by 17th-, 18th-, and 19th-century sources, including slave narratives and early minstrelsy, kindred banjo players Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah, Leyla McCalla, and Allison Russell reinterpret and create new works from old ones. With unflinching, razor-sharp honesty, they confront sanitized views about America’s history of slavery, racism, and misogyny from a powerful, black female perspective. These songs call on the persistent spirits of the daughters, mothers, and grandmothers who have fought for justice – in large, public ways – only now being recognized, and in countless domestic ways that will most likely never be acknowledged. 52 minutes, 36-page booklet with lyrics. Two Hearted Rounder the new album from Sarah Lee Langford, is on a precipice. More specifically: A barstool – a place where life is messy, but the whiskey is neat. It’s here that one of her protagonists is given a proposition – one that has her reckoning the pain of her recent past against the thrill of newfound freedoms. More often than not, Langford’s subjects take the ride – and each song displays a progressively greater confidence, strength, and almost savage commitment to a new life. It’s liberating in more ways than one.
Backed by a gang of Birmingham, AL’s greasiest rockers, including members of The Dexateens and Vulture Whale, Two Hearted Rounder is blessed with loose limbs as well as deadly aim. Much like Langford’s own musical roots, these songs embody the best elements of the Old South and the New West via a well-crafted blend of Appalachian austerity, cosmic country, and honky tonk funk that should appeal to fans of Gillian Welch, Joni Mitchell, Loretta Lynn, and the Flying Burrito Brothers.
And while the grooves are satisfying, and the melodies indelible, it’s Langford’s incisive writing that will keep listeners coming back for more. Langford clearly knows Americana archetypes inside and out, but it’s her ability to imbue them with contemporary humor, beauty, and acidity that gives Two Hearted Rounder both a big heart and sharp claws.

Maria McKee has been out of the proverbial spotlight for some time, her creative talents re-engaging with her first love of acting, performance and the musical tapestries that accompany such activities. 

During the last ten years or so, her philosophical worldview has evolved, grown, matured. And as chapters from her diaries were torn off, old values were questioned, and new ideas were pontificated as the decade drew to a close. Maria McKee was recast; reborn.

Returning with new album due for release next year, Maria Mckee announces signing to AFAR with new single ‘Effigy Of Salt’ that explores relationships in their varying states of evolution and disrepair.

Maria will be performing a rare acoustic performance on 17th November at the Moth Club in London. All proceeds from the show will benefit Maria’s See Me Safe FFS Fund - a funding platform to aid trans women and trans feminine individuals who are self-funding their facial feminization surgeries.

BBE Music present ‘Hepnotherapy’, a 2017 album by London swing group The Hep Chaps.

The Hep Chaps were founded in 1996 after David Howarth and John Wallace met up in the West End of London performing in the stage musical Good Rockin Tonight. They found a musical empathy in the sound of the 30s and 40s and formed a duo specialising in self-penned works with zany lyrics and punchy swing rhythms. In 2005 they formed a six-piece group.

Mingling well-known swing tunes from the 30s & 40s with their own originals in the same classic style this band is one of the most fun & accessible dance bands around.

The band have performed at swing dance clubs, festivals, parties & balls all over the UK and in Europe with special appearances at London’s famous 100 Club, The Jitterbug Ball, The Rhythm Riot & The Swing Cats Ball as well as at Copenhagen’s famous Jazzhouse.
