wav.world emerged out of a long-running chat exchange of mixes, tracks, and some playful speculation: If you were going to make a platform for DJ mixes in 2024, what would it look like?

Mixes are a unique type of musical expression. They capture a specific moment in time, determined by the knowledge and style of the artist. A mix is as important a creative statement as an album, remix or EP. One mix can change an artist’s career, one mix can open a listener’s mind to something completely new.

We miss the importance that mixes used to have. So, we made a platform for mixes.

Each wav.world mix gives one artist the time and resources to create whatever kind of mix they want, to share something sonic about who they are and what they love.

Every wav.world mix will feature a longform interview with the artist which gets to the heart of what moves them—in music and in life—through text, video and image. Each edition of wav.world will feature the commissioned work of music journalists, visual artists and graphic artists.

Sobolik (they/them)

Sobolik is a Queens, NY producer and DJ who's turned heads over the past several years with futuristic club cuts on labels like All Centre, Kindergarten, 3024, early reflex, and CloudCore. These tracks have been supported by DJs across scene and genre boundaries—modern techno shredders like VTSS and CEM, hyper-club divas like Morenxx and Ariel Zetina, colorful percussion wizards like CCL and Rroxymore, and UK bass stalwarts like Lee Gamble and Anz alike have shared Sobolik's work at parties around the globe. Sobolik's world is filled with color and hyperkinetic energy—not fitting in one box, their output reacts to a broad palette of styles within both North American and UK club music. As a member of the Antidote and Kindergarten collectives, they work to connect these dots among likeminded artists in the Brooklyn rave ecosystem. They currently hold a Lot Radio residency with the Kindergarten crew and co-organize Antidote, a queer day rave whose previous bookings include DJ Voices, Russell E.L. Butler, Sister Zo, and Ron Like Hell.

"This mix was improvised in a single take from my new bedroom in Ridgewood. It starts neat and tidy and steadily unspools until a critical moment breaks the sound apart completely. It cuts through many compatible styles; elements of rolling dubstep, old-school techno, jazzy broken beat, smoked-out tech house, and modern perc steppers enter the fray...... until the cool rolling mood gives way for something more indefinable. Many thanks to georg-i for sending me an unreleased showstopper that provided the final climax :)"

"This may be hard to believe but you’re not who you think you are, well you are but you used to be different.

When you were eight years old you were hospitalized for a mysterious stomach pain that was never resolved, that’s when they first implanted your device, every time you were put under after that; your wisdom teeth, your tonsils, your surgery, they’ve updated it. 1 year ago when that stomach pain came back so badly you went to the ER, that pain wasn’t sickness they made you feel that pain so that you had to get an endoscopy, so you’d be put under and they could update your device one last time activating they’re new code and putting you on this new path to fulfill some type of plot points in their insidious plan to control us all. Look around, they’ve already got so many people.

I know you feel like you and that things in your life have become so much better in unexpected ways since that time but I’m here to tell you that this is not you, you’ve left people and things you care about behind in order to live this new life. I know because I am you from the other timeline where you never got the implant at all. 

I made you this mix to remind you of who you are, if you listen correctly you can use it to deactivate your device and get back to a life that centers friendship, connection and love. I know you think you’re happy now but trust me, you have no idea how good it can be. 

To deactivate your device it’s simple, use headphones and listen to this as you fall or while you meditate in the morning. It may not work at first but the more you listen the more you’ll begin to remember and the closer you’ll get to switching back. Once you start seeing your old self in your memories you’ll know you’re getting closer. Try the meditation again, at sunrise if possible. Listen deeply and feel yourself come back into your body, it will be unmistakable. It may feel hard at first, disorienting and unfamiliar but it is you and you are amazing. It will get easier each day.

Your old friends are waiting for you, they’ve missed you and have been trying to get you back this whole time, don’t worry, they will find you and forgive you. 

I know it’s scary but you won’t be alone.

chainletter is a producer and dj whose music serves as a bridge, uniting people through collective experiences in late-night wormholes. Whether using CDJs or an unsuspectingly minimal hardware rig, the audience can expect to be enveloped by sound. Focused primarily on ambient and techno, they use sequencers and synths to make time-expanding atmospheres and wonky rhythms.

Dedicated to DIY, they have been actively involved in playing and organizing parties in the Durham, NC area since 2012. Together with a few friends, they started Triangle Rave Committee in 2019. TRC is a collective that aims to create safer dance spaces for queer and trans people, raise money for prisoners and other mutual aid projects, and provide a platform to local artists outside of conventional venues, primarily under highway overpasses and in the woods. CHAINLETTER is dedicated to advocating for increased access within the music industry for those who have historically been marginalized and denied opportunities, particularly other QTPOC.

Furtive is a full-gonzo rave conjurer and relentless creative tinkerer, intractably committed to the rave as a Philadelphia-based producer, DJ, underground event organizer, and dancer. A shifting sonic chameleon, Furtive brings a scintillating, sentimental, and psychedelic touch to their artistry, rooted in wormhole-traversing technoid propulsion and dependably delivering riotous, slack-jawed whiplash moments of the delightfully unexpected. Their many polished and focused genre-spanning productions are informed by over thirteen years of experience in the studio, yielding a rich selection of tracks across their self-released discography, vinyl pressings, and contributions to compilations. A veritable product of the contemporary American underground, Furtive cut their teeth as a DJ and DIY event organizer in Washington, DC’s warehouses, where they once played a variety of turnkey roles in putting on some of the District’s more proper techno parties. Furtive co-founded and co-runs Bounce House, an intimate, blossoming off-the-books venue in Philly where they regularly hold court as a resident. Beyond the fog and speaker stacks, Furtive creates art in a variety of mediums. They're as unapologetic in their sincerity and flair as they are in being a die-hard True Believer in the rave.
