PlayPlay is an energetic voice of the US queer rave underground, combining their penchant for percussion and bass with nostalgic samples & dreamy synths in both their DJ sets & music production. Their sound is inspired by years of clubbing, crate digging and the sounds they grew up dancing to - 90s club anthems, jungle, breakbeat hardcore, industrial, classic house, techno and old school hip-hop. With releases out on labels such as Sorry Records, Worst Behavior and Clasico Records, as well as a slew of self-releases and collaborations, PlayPlay has been slowly and steadily amassing a thumping discography over the years. You can catch them DJing and throwing parties all over Brooklyn, as well as in their hometown, Durham.

The sprawling canopy of the banyan tree, with its aerial roots reaching down to the earth, symbolizes the diverse landscape of my musical exploration within this mixtape. Much like the banyan's ability to thrive in various environments, from dense forests to urban landscapes, my mixtape traverses through a multitude of electronic music genres. From the deep, atmospheric beginnings reminiscent of the shaded undergrowth to the vibrant crescendos akin to sunlit clearings, the mixtape mirrors the adaptability and resilience of the banyan tree.

COLA REN is a music producer and DJ based in Guangzhou, China. Her sound is inspired by her observations of humanity, introspection, and experiences traveling the globe. She excels in using sound to depict organic visuals and emotional colors, guiding listeners through rhythms originating from different roots of the world.
Her debut self-released EP 'Hailu', a fulsome ambient, Balearic, and downtempo brew with a gorgeous sense of melody and spirituality that offers a soothing escape, which has received early support from Lena Willikens, Vladimir Ivkovic, Salamanda, K-LONE, Al Wootton, Joe Delon, Mixmag Asia and more. She also made appearances on international radio stations such as NTS, HÖR, Kiosk Radio and Rinse FM.

"Durham, NC based “artist/scientist/engineer working on cutting-edge digital signal processing and the fundamental physics of rump-shaking” boxofbox and Sorry Records founder Nick Boyd are two muppet brain music freaks who love each other very much. Despite years of friendship and a number of collaborations from boxofbox’s historic 6 hour SORRYMIX to his appearances at Sorry Records parties at Good Room and Glen Falls House and a wacked out joint appearance on Boo Lean’s Lot Radio show, this recording finds box and Boyd playing together for a dancefloor for the very first time. 'I wanted to create a home-listening mix that layers different emotions and textures in a way that isn't prescriptive, but rather creates an open ended sonic space for the listener to experience and emote and feel. As always I keep my selections pretty eclectic and loose in terms of genre. I wanted to bring in some textures and instrumentation that felt organic or pastoral but in a kind of sparse and cold way that reminds me of early spring.'

Sympathies is a series of self-published releases by Furtive, showcasing an extensive genre-agnostic catalog of colorful original production. The fifth release in the series has the polychromatic producer revisiting and re-tuning their familiar psychedelic murk, making forays into exquisite and sappy new territory, and - inevitably - delivering fearsome acid. Enclosed are nine tracks of kinetic low-end energy, trippy textures, soaring n’ dreamy moments, and crunchy tuff stuff - all for maximum dancefloor wiggliness.

Plunging straight in with shifting propulsive bass movement is Repudiation: a crowning highlight of rippling acid arpeggiation, this track is for when sincerity and gentle dancefloor drama don’t have to come at the expense of high-impact techno kinetics.

The dripping Dendrobatid lowers us into familiar Furtive territory - murky, warping, trippy textures. Dendrobatid is a steamier rendition of this sound, with chunky percussion and leafy breakbeats between the moist, twisting sound design. Profligate submerges us in louring, uneasy warped textures that churn up into slippery, dubbed-out cascades, as the slightly more upbeat Scofflaw pulls us through oil-slicked whirlpool wetness. Both of these trippy, dissociated tracks share sharp, frothy percussive accents, low-slung and steadily progressing synthoid patterns, and a sure case of lost-in-the-fog stumbling.

Furtive fires off a proper fracas with the punishing Pit Dragon and cimmerian Brandstifter. A ferocious fizzed-out acid scorcher, Pit Dragon is a start-to-finish intense fire-breather of a track for high-yield dancefloor detonation. With heavy kicks and slugging bass, Brandstifter has similar intensity, but opts for benthic black-out drum’n’bass sound design of dubbed-out claps, simmering rolling percussion, and uneasy flickers.

For needed levity, Potion Slurper is a somewhat silly sliding bin-rattler for sleepy steppers - either for those still snoozy in the early bits of a night, or for those swirling in the drain in the soporific last morning minutes, once the potions have all been slurped and burped away.

With Gerbera and Dawnpeel, Furtive ventures into the more melodramatic and melodic side of romantic deep techno, weaving soaring, glittering synthesizer movement between heartbeat basses. Gerbera balances the psychedelic with the saccharine, including a warping mycelial overtone texture alongside gossamer pads, while Dawnpeel leans into a glowing, all-smiles warmth for more tender dancefloor moments.

Sympathies is named after a series of portraits, experimental photographs, and weird VHS footage incidentally produced during a wild, debauched studio session - an experience long-since surpassed with all-the-more saturated and riotous adventures.

Sympathies is a blur of emotions, experiences, sensations, relationships, and the psychedelic fragments between.

Furtive is a full-gonzo rave conjurer and relentless creative tinkerer, intractably committed to the rave as a Philadelphia-based producer, DJ, underground event organizer, and dancer. Furtive brings a scintillating and sentimental touch to their many polished and focused genre-spanning productions, informed by over a decade of experience in the studio and yielding a rich selection of self-released tracks, contributions to VA comps, and recent vinyl pressings. A veritable product of the contemporary American underground, Furtive cut their teeth as a DJ and DIY event organizer in Washington, DC’s warehouses, where they played a turnkey role in putting on some of the District’s zaniest techno parties. Furtive now co-runs an intimate, blossoming off-the-books venue in Philly. As a DJ, Furtive has supported internationally celebrated, no-nonsense acts and held court in dingy local watering holes with eclectic selections and a steadfast focus on pacing and dynamics, regularly jumping genres to build moving and impactful sets. Beyond the fog and speaker stacks, Furtive creates art in a variety of mediums. They're as unapologetic in their sincerity and flair as they are in being a die-hard True Believer in the rave.
