Following up her streak of vibrant singles, rising star Vika Kuchak brings us her debut album "Stels". Having spent her teenage years in Magnitogorsk, Ural, the local gloomy geography has had a profound effect on her music.

The unique sensibility of the artist’s tape-fi house and leftfield pop is now materialised into one hour of deep beauty that provides welcome confirmation to her hidden talents. Opening things up with the moody Nocow and DJ Designer collaboration “На танцполе (On the dancefloor)”, Kuchak sets the tone for the rest of the album with its elegiac, sensual atmosphere. Each track's internal ambience has the paradoxical effect of creating an euphoric, emotional centre via a melancholic meandering of sound, smudging her soundscape into a swirling bliss of hauntological house music.

There's certainly intimacy and nostalgia; “Stels” is dedicated to childhood flashbacks full of anarchic, loose, and sometimes traumatised moments. Kuchak on “Stels” melted her sonic introspection into the joyous memoradelia, spinning the ghosts of low-brow dance music favourites of her pre-adolescent age with the recent high-concept drone and ambient obsessions. In her hands, sound reinterpretations of cultural and personal memories become portals to perceiving emotionally resonant dancefloor rhythms and gentleness of avant pop music.

"Stels. There's no agenda here. It's about missing the chaotic, free, sometimes violent space of childhood. The flickering episodes when it was good and the music that was playing at that moment. Basically, nothing new. Plus - the desire that there was music similar to the bastard child of Dr. Alban or Faithless and Biosphere mixed with the notorious low-fi house.

“On 𝑹𝒆𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝑴𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒊, Expugnantis brings to Enmossed a compendium of nine dubs of minimal, crystalline excellence. Reflecting on “foggy” memories of a long car ride from the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg portion of the Great Escarpment, the album texturalizes Expugnantis’s grainy sentimental remembrance. The aquatic production is filtered through cloudy synth pads and plucky percussion. Here the expanse sits in the gestures of the minimal, not hampering the listener with dense maximalism or dramatics, but evoking focus through precise and considered repetition.

While the rooting of the compositions is hypersomnic and sentimental, they are filtered through the geographical contexts of recording and operating in the isolatory confines within Columbia, South Carolina. The murk of the percussion is the architectural foundation for the recordings, the pivoting agent between what Expugnantis thinks of as the immersive aquatic field and the game of going within and out. Emotive but not cliche, driving but not oppressive; Expugnantis takes us to Madadeni or somewhere akin.”

The debut release on Miras stems from co-honchos and long-time residents Atrice. Their musical work is heavily inspired by the uncanny interplay between the tangibility of digital stimulus satiation and authentic real-life encounters in an increasingly disconnected world. Atrice’s compositions have a strong focus on detail, which originates from their academic formation as sound designers. However, the key to the Zurich-based Duo’s production is their playful approach to established genres resulting in emotive soundscapes and energetic amalgamations.
On the three tracks this approach is perfectly mirrored through a hybrid of sultry House, hard-hitting Breaks and neck-bending Gabber. The EP kicks of with the title track "J.A.-Ris", a contagious homage to early Jungle with tight basses and witty Juke inserts. The deep pads enter like a windy thunderstorm on a humid summer day, momentarily taking the light from the sky. It’s followed by the second composition "Give Me", which moves between Breakbeat and House with a futuristic sound design. It penetrates through the darkened clouds and lets the first sunrays shine on the asphalt. A slight smell of Petrichor underlines the dystopian moment.  Lastly "Demorado" enters with many familiar facets, which however are being completely turned on their heard over the course of the piece, reminiscent of a spellbinding whirlwind. It is characterized by Gabber, IDM and Drum'n'Bass influences with cinematic gestures and complex drum structures.
