On today’s very special episode of Songmess we are joined by two returning guests for a far-reaching conversation on the history and complexities of Mexico’s psych scene.

You might remember Valis Ortiz, better known as Manitas Nerviosas, from our interview in episode #77. The experimental musician made a name for herself fronting Monterrey legends Bam Bam, continuing to explore new corners of psychedelic possibility in subsequent projects such as XYX, Penetración Cósmica and Manitas Nerviosas. Our second guest is journalist and musician Marcos Hassan, episode #90, who has been entrenched in Mexico City’s vibrant psych, noise and punk scene for years. His writing can be found at Remezcla, Noisey en Español, as well as Bandcamp and many more, and he performs a unique confluence of balladry and drone music under the moniker Caos del Té.

We are going deep in this episode, the only possible way to approach psychedelic music, and we are dissecting the genre’s history in Mexico, music’s relationship to drugs and even regional flavors. Though an artist at heart, family commitments and a general disinterest for the spotlight have kept El Tan happily planted in his home studio, MATACHIN. Our conversation with the versatile producer highlights the studio as one of the most vital instruments people don’t usually see but always hear. Production work is all about striking the right balances and moods in each song, and El Tan has become one Chihuahua’s most in-demand sound smiths.

Ep. 111 - El Tan

On today’s very special episode of Songmess we continue our Chihuahua series with a super fun conversation featuring Sr. Amable. The psych-rocker, multi-instrumentalist, producer and podcaster is synonymous with Chihuahua’s indie scene and today he is walking us through some local history and a wide array of musical genres.

Sr. Amable is the stage name of Andrés Murillo, who since the mid-aughts has made a splash across Mexico thanks to his multi-faceted psych music, as well as much production work for emerging acts. Along with his studio and collective Futuro de la Economía, Amable’s work has put a spotlight on some phenomenal underground music in Chihuahua. He is also fascinated by music history and the context in which different art forms live, which he explores on his podcast Blues de la Plataforma. And as if that all wasn’t enough, Sr. Amable even has a coffee named after him at popular local café chain Kaldi.
