Wise Up (Demo)

PIN 2 HOT is the latest iteration of the constantly inventive, ever-evolving Akron Sound.  Take seasoned, pedigreed musicians playing recognizable rock ‘n’ roll/folk/soul melodies and riffs, and deconstruct/reassemble them in the style of the great Free Jazz improviser, Albert Ayler.  We’re a “noise” band, but where so many in this genre strive to sonically express pain and anger, our approach is one of delight and fun.  We are Chris Butler (guitar), Bob Ethington (percussion), Corey Jenkins (bass), Michael Aylward (guitar), Stuart Austin (percussion), Matt Reese (cello) and Christina Cruder (reeds).  We play the “classics”…but like you’ve never heard them before.

CHARLIE WAS MY DARLING

1938 radio air check from WEAF, NYC, taken from a 16-inch transcription disk found in a thrift store in Hoboken, NJ, 1996.  Chick & Ella were the summer replacement band. The DJ, in his intro, asks if "y'all got the gage ready?" - "gage" being slang for marijuana.  He also mis-announces Chick.  The DJ must of taken his own advice, and been high as a kite. Since this is an air check, only some complete tracks.

IDIOT TRAIL OVERDUB TEST

A CONVERSATION IN WALTER’S CAFÉ
KENT, OH, 1973

In the ‘70’s, North Water Street in Kent, OH was the place to be for fantastic original music, cheap drinks and easy hook-ups.  And the place to be within the place to be was Walter’s Café – a daytime bum bar that became the nighttime watering hole for artists, musicians, on-the-lam terrorists, dreamin’ low riders and all kinds of angel-headed hipsters (of course, I know where I stole that line from…so don’t bother telling me).  
Tonight tho (as in a 1973 “tonight”), eavesdrop on Chris and Alanna as they get to know each other…or too much about each other?

[FYI: I salvaged this from a stalled CD project of new songs &/or writings about all the women who have influenced me.  It’s my first attempt at writing a theatrical scene, and everything in the story really happened, tho not on the same evening.]

A CERTAIN KIND OF FOOL

Folks, this came up in conversation this morning. This is the backing track to "Late For Work". It's what is call (or used to be called) a "TV" track - a mix without vocals, to be used for lip-synching with live vocals. I'm posting it because I'm getting a little tired of my stuff being described as "weird" or "oddball" or "difficult" or...the worst of all comparisons, as if there is nothing else to relate it to..."Zappa-esque". Can we please once and for all bury the goddamn comparisons to Zappa, who barely made a dent? Harrumph. I hope you enjoy this. Rant over.
