Welcome to the Midgar Records takeover. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Berlin-based label will be taking over the 909 mix series for the duration of September with a mix running each week from a label affiliate with a full lowdown on the label to accompany the final edition.

kicking things off we have the german producer and dj aa sudd taking the helm - locked in with a rolling percussive-led mix.  aa sudd is known for his more experimental psychedelic productions that leans more towards the cinematic, creating these immersive worlds to get lost in. alongside his release on midgar, aa sudd has collaborated with konduku as kondsudd on amenthia recordings and released on mirror zone as vector tracer. aa sudd also hosts the incredible hyperterranean radio on lyl radio. now on its fourth season, the show has featured guests such as agonis, faery, timnah, sybil, kia, garçon, zara and more.

a moving soundtrack hybrid mix by london-based artist hezen featuring emotive lyricism and hauntingly cinematic soundscapes which touches on both the topics and genres that influence her.

hezen has carved out a distinct niche in the music world. drawing inspiration from electronic, dark pop, and avant-garde styles, her music is a fusion of ethereal vocals, intricate beats, and lush, atmospheric production. hezen’s sound is often described as otherworldly, blending emotional depth with a modern, experimental edge. releasing her debut ep, ‘stigma’, in 2017, hezen has been building an universe which has a juxtaposition of beauty and extremities whilst being playful and always referencing to the world around her. earlier this year, hezen released a string of singles, ‘pure again’ and ‘au clair de la lune’, which included club edits to allow her music to be played in the spaces she feels most comfortable in. whilst her music is completely captivating, you witness the full breadth of her talent when she’s performing live – a stage presence like no other. this is witnessed in full force at playbody – a relatively new experimental party and collective that hezen is a resident and curator of. using the design and architecture of the space to bring the audience in and explore what it means to have human connection in a club space.

recently releasing a collaborative single with hasznat and more music on the way, we thought it would be the perfect time to have hezen on untitled 909 to chat more about her musical journey so far, how she got into production, dig a little deeper into playbody and her work with the collective and her exciting new move into hybrid sets.

Ambient Australian sounds are the name of today's premiere game as we welcome Mara, a key figure in Sydney's experimental scene to our platform. Her album, titled ‘At Every Corner’ is the first on fellow Aussie label, Pure Space and comes via their home listening series. Stretching through seven tracks, Mara guides the listener along a journey steeped in field recordings, snippets of past performances, spoken word and more.

Tokyo In 30,000 Steps tastefully combines several of Mara’s performances into one as the song progresses. Beginning with bird-like synth trills, and disembodied voices murmuring in the background. A feeling of energy persists and scattered attention spans fill the space. Almost as soon as it starts, a sudden change occurs, and darker, drone-like melodies emerge. Like a light and dark, contrasting moods, a call and response to symbolize the frenetic nature of today's lives.

Tokyo In 30,000 Steps and in turn, the remainder of Mara’s album will be released on September 19th.

Many artists find comfort staking their claim to a scene or genre, but leaving specifics behind and embracing the grey areas between strands of electronic music has helped Emily Jeanne emerge as one of the shining lights of dance music’s new guard. In fact, it’s those grey areas that Jeanne has always felt comfortable in. Historically a refuge for outliers in search of the esoteric, in recent times dance music finds itself at a crossroads where maintaining a sense of the individual is harder than ever. Emily’s authentic approach to production and Djing, that pits broken beats and left of centre derivatives in amongst more direct, dance floor material, can be seen as a direct reflection of the artist’s ever-shifting interior – and her comfort with a plural and undefined personal identity. Her musical output including 2020’s album Public by Default – and more recently, a pair of EPs released via Peder Mannerfelt’s much lauded eponymous imprint, are testament to this fact. Beyond her productions, a residency at Ghent’s Funke Club has allowed the artist a degree of world-building and an opportunity to stretch curatorial muscles.
