"The CD is scratched.” A saying from the early millennium, it describes the phenomenon of skipping music on a damaged CD, the locked, repetitive groove. For nearly a decade, Fossilized Wilderness has been experimenting with a peculiar modification to CDJ equipment, birthed by long hours sorting through promotional CDs sent to a radio station. In embracing choppiness, a body of abrasive but bright ambient work has been constructed from the refuse of musical commodification.

The CD skip is both rhythm and tone on this LP, but if you expect the monotonous motions of a concept album, don’t: The moods here are just as granular. The six tracks shift from digital euphoria to shoegazing sentimentalism, a balanced mix of terror, plaintiveness, and joy, an impressive feat considering that the scratch of a CD produces potent nostalgia as well as Pavlovian irritation for many—a drive to eject the thing and fix the problem.

For those not growing up with it, the scratched CD is a relic phenomenon, something that happened with an artifact format. But just because it’s an artifact doesn’t mean it’s obsolete. On this LP, Fossilized Wilderness uses a sonic palette of subtly-shifting broken loops to create something new: delirious spectres rising from an ocean of plastic.

This week's Rubber Tijd is served to you fresh with a side weirdness by Derozan. Based in Nieuwegijn (the Netherlands), Derozan is interested in exploring global dance music. In his own words:

"This two hour mix will guide you thru the rough edges of global dance music. Why two hours? Because then there is space to listen to the smaller details like a transition going left and right that is maybe intended or just a human mistake? Tiny soundFX with beeps and bops and tempo switching for the adventurous type. Rhythmic noise patterns combined with traditional percussion instrumentals for a better understanding of the term global dance music. And then we have the vocal part where society is being addressed for the current state we as people are going thru right now..."

RUBBER TIJD with Derozan

Line Clean 9-6 was a co-commission between Radiophrenia and Resonance Extra as part of Strands, supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

Line Clean 9 – 6 is composed around a series of abstract, rhythmic recordings made on shift at work (in the cellar of a pub), household objects (bins, bikes and cookers) and snippets of found sound recorded on a phone. Using a process of layering and splicing plus augmenting with ‘traditional’ instruments, he aims to draw out the beauty and musicality in everyday sound exploiting the harmonic and structural qualities inherent in everything we hear. The resulting collage combines, water pumps, beer kegs, bin lids, sound checks, bouzouki, clarinet, MS20, cowbells, choral polyphony, pipes and whistles.

To honor the recent passing of composer Harold Budd, this special edition of Wayward in Limbo features a live recording of a very special concert by Harold and Seattle bassist Keith Lowe. 

The performance took place at the Good Shepherd Center Chapel in Seattle on June 11, 2009 to celebrate the release of Harold's book of poetry, "Colorful Fortune." It was co-presented by Nonsequitur and publishers Heavenly Monkey Editions (Vancouver) and MoonLiner Books (Seattle). Thanks to Rob Angus for the beautiful recording, and to Keith Lowe for agreeing to share it with us.

And thank you, Harold, for gracing this world with your beautiful music. You are appreciated and missed.
