The Phonica mix series returns for 2025! Kicking off the year with a bang is one of our favorite and definitely one of the slickest underground producers of the minute Tiago Walter. Running Jisul Records (together with Nils Diezel and Ba Dum Tish's Alec Falconer) Walter has used the imprint to put out killer release after release with a unique and clean take on the tied lines between tech, soulful and deep house. This is a joint sound that you can find travelling not just throughout this hour and a half journey he has recorded for us, but at sets he has played all over Europe i.e. London's Pickle Factory or Offenbach's Robert Johnson club! So get your headphones on and prepare to bop your head to this masterclass in house music from the excellent Tiago Walter. The singular brand of house music that Taylor Freels produces as Liquid Earth is uniquely transatlantic, infusing the rhythmic sensibilities of London and Berlin with the sun-soaked serenity of his native California. Part '80s sleaze, part '90s deepness, part '00s wiggle, Freels makes dance music cocktails that pop like a twist of lime hitting seltzer. Melodic, crisp, and always refreshing, each track by the California-native is singularly recognisable as he refashions vintage sounds for the clubs of tomorrow.

Under his most recent alias, Liquid Earth, Freels has been pushing, as Resident Advisor put it, "tech house with a twist." His state-of-the-art analog grooves emerged from the ether fully formed in 2019 with some of the deepest basslines and crunchiest melodies out there. Freels' squigly take on contemporary house and techno always comes primed with a dose of California sunshine. 

Carrying on the legacy of storied California predecessors like Halo and Hipp-E, he's been swivelling heads and moving bodies with releases on labels at the vanguard of the underground, like Kalahari Oyster Cult and Is/Was sub label TerraFirm, collaborations with Tornado Wallace as Dinnervisions, and a remix of his starry-eyed, "Scope Zone" by Youandewan landed him notoriety among the scenesters alike. 

More than just a producer, Freels knows how to pack a punch behind the decks, moving from classic West Coast Breaks to UK tech house with aplomb and mastery. His bookings and podcasts have been piling up like hot cakes with best-in-class mixes for the likes of Honey Soundsystem, Butter Side Up and Faciendo and DJ appearances from Dimensions Festival to Panorama Bar.

International purveyors of the good groove, Futureboogie, notch up their eighth annual Summer Riot compilation EP this August, with an eclectic gathering of producers and tracks that fittingly encapsulate the current balmy vibes and a summer load of festivals and parties already behind us.

Techno dream-weaver, A Sagittariun, follows up his recent Futureboogie remix of Desert Sound Colony’s ‘Beta Burner’ with a hypnotic chugger, laced with the crystalline melodies that Sagi is renowned for, whilst Disco Halal regular, Kincaid, serves up some splendid 80s affected disco licks that reach for the stars.

Former Digital Justice member Liam Duggan (and one of the few Brits to release on Derrick May’s Fragile label), introduces his new project, The Red Flower Union, with a stylish yet wonky analogue workout.  

Prior releases for Cin Cin and Cutters have already brought STATUE to our attention, and ‘Ivory’ is a shining collage of live percussive work and ‘hands in the air’ piano and organ motifs, driven by its steady house rhythm.  And closing the ‘Summer Riot VIII’ release is Futureboogie regular, Neil Diablo, who yet again delivers a first class deployment of a new age Italo roller that’s packed with juicy synths and hard hitting drum machines.

10 months on from his last solo outing - a four-track missive of "Good Vibes" on Midnight Riot - South London's Shit Hot Soundsystem makes his belated bow on Slightly Transformed. There's much to enjoy on opener "Playground", a buzzing, low-slung chunk of mind-altering dub disco full of trippy electronic noises, intense bass, funky guitars and well-placed samples from a New York disco classic. On accompanying cut "Oh My My" he whips off his shirt and runs giddily towards sunny and summery disco pastures, adding his distinctive touch to a glassy eyed early '80s cut full of chopped-up rifts, celebratory vocal snippets and excitement-building filter sweeps.

We are not trying to re-write the tales or stories, but rather provide a new context for the same teachings and mythical proverbs. Fouk, Cody Currie, Friend Within embark on an interstellar voyage to assist in this quest for new knowledge and insight. Voyagers like Sam von Horn, Danny Goliger, Henry Was, Benny Bridges and Justin Jay also bring forth their own interpretations of the eternal tales encapsulated​ in the Book of Thump. If we are ever unsure of what the stories mean, we can always look to the Book itself for guidance: as chapter 2 of the Book exclaims, "Dance Like It's Your Life!" Enjoy.
