System Failure explores the work of the sound/art/activist collective Ultra-red that creates different model of engagement between participatory art, organizing and public pedagogy. Through sound and critical listening, Ultra-red’s work is found on the intersections of art, critique, politics and grassroots organizing/community making  and has been valuable and influential to bridging art and political organizing, de-centring curation practices, as well as the creation and theorization of ambient and listening as a political vehicle tied to local communities, spaces, places, histories and political demands. Their broader activist-artistic praxis includes electronic music, field recordings, interviews, video pieces, participatory sound installations etc Founded in 1994 by two AIDS activists, Ultra-red have over the years expanded to include artists, researchers and organizers from different social movements including the struggles of migration, anti-racism, participatory community development, and the politics of HIV/AIDS.

Continuing this season of white-hot CENTER BOOTH sets is Brooklyn's own KYRUH, a much-loved local talent with an ever-growing international fanbase.

Four years into her DJ career, KYRUH’s development as an artist is palpable. These days, the New York native commands crowds across North America and Europe with considerable confidence, in part from the myriad of experiences and opportunities that have come her way. She even got tapped to do a Kelela remix! 

Whether she's DJing at Brooklyn clubs such as Paragon (RIP), Bossa Nova Civic Club, Nowadays or BASEMENT (where she's practically a resident), further afield at RSO Berlin, Thuishaven, Renate and Khidi, sharing the decks with regular collaborator WTCHCRFT as Madness Of, or supporting the biggest names in techno including Jeff Mills, DJ Stingray 313, DJ Pierre and DVS1, KYRUH leaves a memorable impression with her distinctive and increasingly sophisticated style. She tends to play stormy and speedy, but with a fondness for groove and long blends, aiming to move hips and rinse minds at the same time.

Her CENTER BOOTH set exhibits all the markers of her growth, opening with a disorienting passage that sounds like a malfunctioning machine while keeping time with the beat. Next comes a rush of noteworthy transitions as tribal drumming gives way to hypnotic loops into horn-led beats. It's a mostly smooth but always compelling ride from there on in, dark but nimble, paced to perfection, and effectively designed to induce a trance-like state. KYRUH is a impact specialist forced in the crucible of modern NYC's notable spaces, including WIRE, Dweller and Bossa Nova Civic Club. Trailcam is the new moniker of Toronto-based artist Rita Mikhael, who up until recently had been releasing cutting-edge, club-driven explorations under the name E-Saggila for nearly a decade. Her new project made its debut with a stellar EP of dubbed-out downtempo cuts titled 'Drumlin Loop', which dropped on the influential Swedish label Northern Electronics in July of this year. Though we were initially mourning the shelving of her luminous E-Saggila project, 'Drumlin Loop' proved itself a worthy shift in direction. The sound is notably paired down, though perhaps evermore engaging, signaling a matured sense of palette and world-building that comes from her confidence in restraint. In that way, it shares kinship with some of the best of artists like Maurizio, Andy Stott, and Sandwell District.

Her set on this week's edition of CENTER BOOTH expands on the lush sounds of 'Drumlin Loop', several tracks from which appear here, although sped up slightly in order to weave themselves into the otherwise relaxed pace of a dub techno set. It's a divinely textural listening experience, both beautiful in its intricacy, and ominous in its tone. Soft, hissing noise and shimmering, dubby synths are undercut by thick, rumbling basslines, its unassuming pace belying the force of its rhythm. Here, Trailcam seems to find a home in her new sound, and we're beyond thrilled that she came by to share it with us.
