Hazy-ville indeed…

The final cut taken from Future Unit’s 2018 Album ‘Bad Denim’  ‘All I Listen To’ pulls in some heavyweight remixers with stunning results.

First up is the ‘A Space Age Freak Out’ Remix starts off all Kraftwerk before dropping a fat kick on the offbeat and going into updated WFL era Happy Mondays territory.  This just builds and builds -  a joyous noise of filtered analogue electronics and psych disco which reflects A Space Age Freak Outs’ John Paynter’s eclectic radio shows and DJ sets.

Next up is Field of Dreams remix. Retaining the original BPM it comes on strong with a deep house bass line, sounding like some re-discovered Chicago house tune.  The tweaked classic 303 sound subtly intensifies the build all the while working lovingly with the full vocal from the original.  Moody and atmospheric, like driving through the city at 12am in a clapped out old beemer looking for the party. 

3rd in and Future Unit takes his original track, pumps up the percussion and re-builds the track around an insistent rubbery bass groove, culled and simplified from the original mix. The vocal is still there as is the post punk guitar, just treated to even more of a house outing.

I did these remixes for a competition for the amazing Orielles and though not a winner, they have very kindly let me share them.  The original track 'Euro Borealis' is the usual stereolab/world of twist inspired brilliance you would expect from this talented band and is taken from the album 'Disco Volador' out on Heavenly Records, also available from their bandcamp page

The Disco Dub mix is a 115 party starter while the Escape from new york mix comes on all carpenter-esque, brooding and downtempo at around 105bpm.  Hope you enjoy !

Given a pulsing chuggy remix, Future Unit's 'Back From The Dead' bristles with malevolent vocals, dubby bass and acid synths leading up to a Happy Mondays styled guitar breakdown before the dubby beats take over again.  

'Hows That Working out For You?' is an uplifting slice of more synth, dub and durrutti column styled guitars.

What Shines Forth: that is, what is illuminated in your world. What reveals itself to you that is important; this EP represents what music and sounds are illuminated and inspirational in the world of Future Unit, aka producer, instrumentalist and vocalist Remy Felix Vas. Fake Sunshine (115 bpm) is lyrically inspired by that time when the summer sun turns to autumn sun; though hot, it doesn’t quite feel right. On a deeper level it’s about looking for the meaning in front of you and not chasing a distraction that is ultimately fake. The lyrics provide a strong vocal hook sitting proudly aloft classic Chicago house inspired beats and 303 basslines. Added into the mix are psychedelic analogues and warm factory records inspired pads providing a beautiful uplift to take us to conclusion. Part Adonis’ ‘No way Back’, part New Order part Satanic Majesties Request. Further strong hooks are all over the instrumental ‘Nice Manoeuvre’ (117bpm). Squidgy acid lines weave in and out of a throbbing sub bass and thumping kick, designed to vibrate the sound system, once government guidelines allow… the track builds and builds to reveal dreamy disco inspired synth pads and post punk guitars before a sleazy synth bassline pulls you further into the groove. The bitty electro-funk stylings of the titular ‘What Shines Forth’ (112bpm) provides a thumping hip-hop kick as the anchor, while throbbing moog bass lines, Dreamy 80’s arcade game synths and revelatory, joyous pads get you lost in a wonderful psychedelic sea of electronica. Pure Escapism if ever it was needed.

Future Unit. Leftfield disco.  Eclectic electronica. Cosmic synths, acid basslines, fat drums, intensity, atmosphere, a nod to rave, a loose groove.  This is creative dance music taking in classic influences such as factory records, funk, The Stone Roses, Daft Punk, Balearic, Chicago house and library music, all fed through a contemporary filter.  

Future Unit is London based composer and producer Remy Felix Vas.  Previous vinyl only releases on the Pornwax and Tuskwax labels in 2016 met with critical acclaim.  His recent single ‘Lazybones’ on Ramrockred includes remixes by dance music legend Ashley Beedle (Xpress 2, Black science Orchestra) and has  drawn support from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music and Bill Brewster to name but a few. The man is clearly doing something right and late 2017 saw him drop his debut album proper ‘The Drawback.’  With a second album due for release in summer 2018, this is creative dance music that won’t just wash over you  - there’s too many hooks and song-writing sensibilities there for that. It will bring you up, it will get you raucous and then lovingly return you to earth; it will stay with you long after tonight is all over...
