Walken in a Winter Wonderland

Late April 2020, at the anxious height of the quarantine lockdown, I received an unexpended message from my fellow brothers in sound at Outro music store in Istanbul asking if I wanted to make a mix as part of their pandemic sessions.

I had already been listening to the earlier Outro Sessions for a few weeks & found them to be selections of rare/unheralded songs mixed by seasoned selectors across many genres from around the globe.

So, I was both honored to be asked and excited to make my first bedroom mix in a few years. All my recent DJ mixes had been recordings of my live DJ sets.

It took me a couple three weeks to decide the mood for the mix. One of my most indelible memories of the enchanting city that Istanbul is was taking the ferry from the European side to Kadaköy in the heat of late Summer late night in September 2019. I could vividly recall my dizzy joy staring at the inky Bosphorous, the shadows of the old waterside buildings and the rich swath passenger faces from across ages, fortunes and borders packed around me. Also that night, I was on my way to meet the Outro crew for the first time and hear an esteemed vinyl selector visiting from Bologna. 

The eclectic batch of songs on this mix are me speaking of my wonton memories of that nite.

This a mix from both vinyl and compact discs and was recorded in one go. There is a needle skip around the 20 minute mark. I decided to leave it in, an audio wart to startle the streaming generation.

It's an extended journey just over 3 hours so longer then normal Ecstatic Dance formet.  And more 4/4 than most Edance but there is broken house and downtempo and evena Drum and Bass track in the mix

Our good friends https://soundcloud.com/khruangbin brought their blend of ambient guitars and 'thai-funk' to the lawn stage on Sunday afternoon this year. It was a magical journey of meandering music that caught pretty much everyone off guard, in a great way, https://soundcloud.com/move-d even went as far as defining it as his favourite moment of the entire festival.  To honor the lovely island of Jamaica, this dj set is simply my favorite feel good reggae tunes.  You will hear dub, conscious dancehall, lovers rock, ska,  and traditional roots reggae songs. Jamaica's musical influence is also heard in some Latin, West African, Turkish, Arabic, and Isreali tunes as well.  I really tried to tell a story with the songs, so I encourage you to listen closely to the lyrics, which speak about uniting together, becoming a better version of your self, the problems and challenges with money, the joy of smoking marijuana, everyday struggles, living good, and of course, LOVE. Almost all of these tracks I own on vinyl, and I had such a blast recording these all week long, just vibing on down memory lane, in preparation for  this set.
