This mix is indebted to Andrew Weatherall. It’s a nod to both his familiar and lesser-known sonic sides. I hope the mix is something he would enjoy listening to, with new songs to discover and signature tunes spread throughout. We could call it a tribute to (or perhaps more honestly, a rip-off of) an undeniably defined sound.

But was it? Weatherall would be the first to reject this premise, even if we know it to be the case that his sound was recognizable far beyond the average musician or dj's reach. But perhaps by 'sound' we really mean 'style,' for no one could argue - not even the man himself - that on this he remains unrivaled.

Weatherall refused to be predictable or risk being put in a box, on principle but also quite naturally: if ever he felt pigeon-holed, he wouldn’t “change musical direction, just sidestep.” He was an artist in constant evolution, impervious to the rules of others, and I am inspired by his mind just as much as I am his methods.

As a self-proclaimed underachiever, Weatherall took a stance against ambition throughout his career, in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. The sidestep lifestyle hinges on this ethos, and from it emerges a clear channel for creativity - with originality at its source.

This mix is an ode to the underachievers, the anti-ambitionists, the sidesteppers. Never forget, as the man himself once said: if you ever find yourself climbing the ladder, it’d be best to jump off before you’re halfway up.

For RA.1000, DJ Sprinkles' first mix in over a decade is a powerful meditation on the genocide in Gaza.

Dance music often relies on simple narratives: release, escape, unity. But those narratives can often feel inadequate, and even at times, hollow. Or, as Terre Thaemlitz might bluntly put it, just "shitty."

For her first mix in around 15 years, Terre Thaemlitz AKA DJ Sprinkles, challenges us to think differently. "I felt this 1000th podcast should reflect the moment in which it was made," she told us in her Q&A.

And what is this moment? Every day since Israel's 2023 assault on Gaza began, an average of 28 children have been killed. That's an entire classroom, every day, for over 600 days (at the time of writing). It's a staggering figure that only captures a fragment of the listless cruelty imposed on the strip.

Faced with such a genocide, what can music really do? How political can it truly be?  For their RA.1000, Thaemlitz gives us an unflinching rebuke to the idea that music should provide escapism. The mix weaves ambient fragments and jazz passages, woven around samples from Israeli media and the voices of outspoken Jewish critics like Gabor Maté and Norman Finkelstein. 

The result is not just a protest, but a document of our time. For Terre Thaemlitz, music is never just music. Her RA.1000 serves as a reminder that in an age of relentless suffering, the most political act is to reject the illusion of escape, and search for something greater.

“A recording from pe:rsona in France, one of the most memorable sets of the summer for me!! 

I felt a connection to this crowd in particular and that’s not something that happens often. A lot of this is down to the people behind this festival, the pe:rsona/Positive Education crew are very intentional with what they do, they champion and support a lot of artists who aren’t necessarily ‘big names’. I think this cultivates a crowd that trusts in their curation, they’ve fostered this really special energy. 

I played on Friday night between two live sets, Christian Coiffure and Renslink. They are two incredible acts to be sandwiched in-between which inspired the set to evolve the way it did.
