After getting in his time as a performing & touring musician with bands like The Appleseed Cast and Shearwater, Lucas embarked on a long and cathartic songwriting and recording process that would result in his sophomore full length, Whet. Lucas Oswald pulls influence from all over the map to craft his dense and colorful sophomore album. The songs were written over several tours abroad and recorded near Oswald’s hometown in rural Missouri, as well as San Antonio and Austin.
 
Whet also means to sharpen a tool, which to Lucas was a great metaphor for growth. "It took a lot of growth to make this album, and for me, as an artist, to sorta become the person I am." The homophone "wet" means almost the opposite of the "sharpened tool" definition of whet and the album (sonically) is just that: juxtapositions between sharp, punchy, abrasive sounds, and washy/reverby textures. It sounds as much like a singer songwriter record as it does like a reverb-laden Britpop record from the 90’s. Where Lucas’ creative journey ends, the journey of Whet begins.

Over the course of 2013, Matt Flegel and Scott Munro worked in their basement studio with a mess of old and run down equipment to build a set of fresh material. Joined by bandmates Daniel Christiansen and Michael Wallace, the band completed work on an debut cassette. A small run of these hastily dubbed tapes would be available on the first tour by the band now known as Preoccupations.

Lost Map Records are delighted to welcome the return of London lo-fi dreamy-grunge quartet Lazy Day with their shimmering and soaring new track ‘Hiccup’ – which is available to stream and share now via Spotify, Apple Music and all other major streaming services. It’s the thrilling first taster of their forthcoming EP Ribbons, which is due for release on 10” vinyl and digital formats on September 15, 2017. The single precedes Lazy Day’s first UK headline tour, which begins in Guildford on Monday, September 18 and takes in 12 dates around the country. 

‘Hiccup’ follows Lazy Day’s now long-since sold-out Record Store Day 2015 split 7” single with Tuff Love, ‘Portait’ / ‘Groucho’, and the ‘Disappear’ 7” single, which was accompanied by a stunning and trippy video hailed by DIY Mag as “yet more evidence of Tilly’s growing ambitions, as she amps up with a full band, and hits down on the accelerator”.

Lazy Day began life in 2014 as the bedroom solo project of Tilly Scantlebury. Self-recording her tracks on Garageband and making them available to hear via SoundCloud, she quickly gained extensive attention and praise from many respected music websites and blogs. Since expanding to a four-piece band currently featuring drummer Beni Evans, guitarist Liam Hoflay and newest member bassist Jake Head, they’ve gone on to twice be longlisted for Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent Competition, appear at festivals including LeeFest: The Neverland, SWN Festival and the Beacons Festival and earn radio play from BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne. 

“I wrote ‘Hiccup’ two summers ago when I found myself in a romantic situation that I wasn’t ready for,” says Tilly. “The song is about not knowing what someone else is thinking and ending up in your own head. I wanted to play with the idea of a ‘hiccup’ – a weird involuntary bodily reflex that causes disruption, even if only for a second. A hiccup is like an unpredictable bump in the road, and it was a way for me to express the lack of control I felt I had at the time. I had a lot of fun mirroring this in the music, especially with the band in the studio – chopping and changing the pace and feel of the song so you’re never quite sure what’s next.”

‘Hiccup’ was recorded by Bottle Rocket Recording at The Crows’ Nest Studios, mixed by Adrian Hall (Anna Calvi/Goldfrapp) at Clever Pup Studios and mastered by Andy ‘Hippy’ Baldwin at Metropolis. Artwork and press shot by Eleanor Crewes.

Lazy Day - 'Hiccup'

Swedish boutique music label ICEA adopted the Positano natives to polish their dream-pop soundscapes. Listeners were introduced to Emmecosta’s music at the end of 2016 and the dawn of 2017 with the tracks “His Power of Youth” and “Miguel”. The synths, punctuated guitar and silky vocals evoke memories of Phoenix circa 2004. The remaining two tracks, “Heavy Heart” and “A Mountain From Us” blend pulsing waves of synths and echoing vocals, mirroring Snakadaktal’s Sleep in the Water (2013). 

In many ways, Emmecosta communicate intoxicating atmospheres with their dream-pop, reminiscent of Washed Out, where the muffled vocals paint the landscape and guide the listener to melt into nature. The music videos for “Miguel” and “His Power of Youth” were filmed in seaside Positano and Scandinavian forests, complementing the music and the story of the band. Emmecosta says, “There is a hidden romantic darkness in the actual story, which represents the band’s melancholy in relation to their hometown in Italy, and what it was been like to immigrate to Sweden. There is a craving for home, yet acceptance of new belonging.” 

Stereogum and Clash Magazine have both praised the band for their “blissed out electronics with a liquid feel” more accurately than their self-proclaimed “post-club tropical indie soul” - a description that raises eyebrows, but enhances a sense of self-awareness in the calming hours after a party, before bed.  Emmecosta dedicates their music ideas to time and place - living in the moment, while feeling split between their lives in Italy and Sweden. The result is a sound that feels comfortable and contemplative.   

"’Velour’ is the feeling of unshakable longing for a place we’ve never been. This is a specific form of wanderlust – a craving for a distant land or a deep feeling of ‘homesickness’ for a place we have never seen. We imagine distant places through small fragments: everyday life seen elsewhere. We are going through a strange sensation of disorientation, something magical seen from far away. We fall in love with this fragment. It holds the promise for more. We move around it.” - Emmecosta
