It’s always exciting when a DJ rips up the rulebook. Emerging from the Copenhagen underground is Prom Night, real name Shaq. He’s been touted as a bit of an upcoming gem as he blurs the lines between sleazy disco cuts and chuggers, italo house, afro-house and funk and beyond.

Originally from Aarhus he first began DJ’ing at just nine years old and describes his sound as being heavily influenced by 80’s pop culture hence the name. He reflects on his roots and recent embarkment into the world of music production:
 
“A lot of my productions are inspired by/ centered around a fusion of 70’s and 80’s Disco combined with modern and contemporary styles of House music.”

When we invited him to record this mixtape we weren’t entirely sure what we were going to get. What we’ve ended up is a spectacular showcase of Prom Night’s ability as a selector capable of switching quickly between genres and pushing the limitations. This one is a fun filled affair perfect for the weekend…

Ariane V is a sucker for an infectious house cut. Not your regular "monotonous doof doof" as she calls it, we're talking the kind of house music that'll keep your energy levels high and your bodies moving from the get go. 

The Czech-born, London-based DJ has come up through the ranks as part of Common Ground (FKA Rhythm Sister), a DJ collective who platform, support and promote womxn, non-binary and trans artists.

Thanks to her refined tastes, which you can hear on her monthly radio show on South London's Balamii, individually she's been picking up regular slots across London and the UK, with an upcoming debut overseas in Slovakia soon.

Best listened to as a little Friday night sonic pre-amble or to soundtrack your home cooking, Ariane's Shine A Light offering is an hour and a half journey through laidback jams, cosmic chuggers, uplifting vocal house and driving progressive cuts, with a couple of tracks from her native Czech Republic thrown in the mix.

The first offering on Australian label Lunatic Music comes from Jamie Blanco of Ess O Ess. Unit of Measure takes the listener on an acid-laced journey, while Sample Bases shows us Blanco’s range and stays true to the title. To complement the release, both cuts have been flipped and remixed. The A-side getting dubbed out by the don Conrad McDonnell of the Idjut Boys, While the B-side cops treatment by local lunatics Dexter Gregg & Mick Harney of Oak Park.

Ruby has been DJing between Adelaide/Kaurna and Melbourne/Naarm for 5 years now, whilst also curating parties of her own under the name ‘Lush’. Fittingly, now based in the lush town of Halls Gap in The Grampians where this mix was recorded, her preferred selection varies across the realms of deep and melodic, to minimal and progressive house and techno, however, not restricted to any specific genres. This particular mix is a reflection of life in the past few months, with the serene calmness of country living, along with time spent in the high-energy city of Melbourne.

AN AFRO DANCE MANIFESTO: LISTEN TO LEN LEISE’S NEW VINYL-ONLY MIX

Beginning his 2015 with a self-released edits EP that immediately sent the ‘wants’ to ‘haves’ on Discogs into the stratosphere, Melbourne-based record collector and producer Len Leise has dropped a stunning 75-minute “afro dance” manifesto for our latest vinyl-only mix.

With his new mini-LP Lingua Franca on International Feel catapulting him to the top of every Balearic head’s End Of Year list, this new mix digs around the roots of the record in a little more detail, pulling out the Nigerian boogie bombs and odd-ball fashion funk 12″s that never leave his record bag.

Assembled from the rare (he was willing to swap a copy of his coveted Edits to get hold of one) and the not so rare, it’s a journey that reflects the wanderings of Lingua Franca, taking you down river on a raft of shimmering synths and percussive grooves.

One side of Lingua Franca was heavily influenced buy the afro disco and funk that I regularly DJ out. It happens a lot that what I DJ in turn comes back into my music in some subtle way. So this being a more uptempo mix is more of a representation of what it’s like to hear me DJ out, the tracks I love to play whilst paying homage to some of the tracks that helped shape and inspire Lingua Franca. Particularly the B-side.

Number 018 is a collaboration between Christopher Rau & Hakim Murphy. During the many times that they have met, the topic of politics always came up in conversation. With all the problems in the world, the title of the 12” was formed: Geopolitical Problems Yet to be Solved. This four track EP symbolizes the differences of the world culture’s with its diverse track selection. Liquid synths, bouncing percussion, and variety of feels really describe this project. The problems of the world will never be solved but this is their take on what the problems sound like.
