The 'Lord Of Hardcore' and founder of Evolution Records, Scott Brown is one of the most important figures in the Scottish dance music scene. He was heavily involved in the rise of the hardcore techno sound from the early 1990's. His mixture of bouncy techno and gabba annihilated dancefloors across the country and influenced hardcore producers around Europe. Evolution Records is the UK's longest running and arguably the biggest ever hardcore label. It always has been incredibly popular througout the scene. The demand was so high around '94, Scott created many sublabels including Evolution Gold and specialising in the harder edged material were Twisted Vinyl and Screwdriver Records. He even released tracks on giant Dutch hardcore labels such as Dwarf & Babyboom Records, Paul Elstak's Forze Records and Bass-D & King Matthew's Inferno Records. He produced under many aliases as you can see from the tracklisting below. This mix is obviously influenced by one of my favourite ever sets, the 'Rezerection - Awakening of '95' mix and will be the first of 3 mixes devoted to his awesome back catalogue.

The legend that is Scott Brown will always be top of the hardcore tree.

Nobody Said It Was Hardcore

It's easy to see why some might say Los Angeles is currently in the middle of a rap renaissance. Though the city has always had a thriving underground music scene, a new crop of aspiring artists combined with L.A.'s do-it-yourself ethos have made it ground zero for rappers to meet and build. "They're open-minded here, more so than other cities," says POUYA, rapper from Miami. "There's all types of rappers here. Everyone's just tryna get it."

While they might seem "weird" to the average rap fan, L.A.'s next wave of rappers are outsiders -- artists on the fringe fusing current sounding trap with genres like Emo, Pop Punk and Death Metal. "Growing up I never really felt appreciated," adds Pouya, "The outside world never really saw me until I started making music...I think being a loser is cool now. I think being a loser is what's in." Kids who identify less with being "hypebeasts" and more with being emo, goth, skater, hipster or just flat out misunderstood can find a place in these new, alternative rap circles.

Although L.A. might not be the birthplace of this new scene's more prominent figures, it is a place they can come to connect and create together. Having met through the internet, many of the artists from this scene eventually found themselves in L.A. where they were able to form a community. "The best thing about the music scene in L.A. is everyone's here," says the rapper FAT NICK. "You might not know they're here but once you tweet or Instagram you get like 100 phone calls."

With the support of the internet, their fans, and each other, these artists are taking their careers to the next level. "We all met on the internet. I feel like without SoundCloud I wouldn't even be right here," says rapper Lil Tracy. "I get checks from there, I get my views from there, I get more supporters from there," adds Fat Nick. "Like, I wouldn't be where I am today without that." 

Doing what they want, when they want, however they want to, this next wave of rappers are carving their own paths. "Really, it's just an underground family, ya know," says Pouya. "I'm a fucking loser, Nick's a loser, we're all losers. We're degenerates."

I decided to take on an old favourite of mine, the Rezerection anthem from 95', and give it a fresh new spin for 2018.
