"What’s up with Mathias Schaffhäuser?"

During recent weeks, several media outlets and nearly his entire fanbase scrutinized how close Mr. Schaffhäuser was to the Abyss, wondering whether one should worry about him or if it was time to light the bonfire to celebrate his illumination. There’s a big mystery about his long-awaited Abyss single release: is it a meaningful hymn of our times, or just a sentimental, melancholic mirror of Mathias’ mental state?

Well, luckily things are different from how they may seem at first sight, and nobody should feel troubled for the Cologne-based artist. The lyrics of the song emerged spontaneously during one of his DJ sets, when he improvised and sang along - one of Schaffhäuser’s special skills - inspired by the 1989 sci-fi film of the same name, a fascinating deep water adventure. The stand-out message is a positive one woven into a dark fabric. “Build me a bridge over the Abyss”: get your things done, be active, don’t lose your hope - life goes on!

'Abyss' was originally released on Schaffhäuser’s acclaimed 'Diderot' album on Biotop in 2016. During a preliminary listen, it was immediately the most touching track for label boss Patrick Zigon, and formed the basis of the idea to work on the album. Timo Maas and Ruede Hagelstein were additionally fascinated by this dark yet luminous masterpiece, so the idea of a strong remix single was born and quickly realized. Timo delivers a rough version with banging drums and trippy vocal effects, while Ruede Hagelstein adds beautiful harmonic synths to his reductionist hypnotic voyage. Patrick Zigon captures the ‘80s vibe and underlines it with classy electro breaks, while Mathias speeds up the original with his 'Accelerated Mix'.

02. Mathias Schaffhäuser - Abyss (Timo Maas Connect Rework)

French techno legend Laurent Garnier is among the second batch of those adapting Input-Output to their own artistic vision, selecting the song "Air Castle" as his target. The Legion of Honor awardee takes things into a darker realm with his rendition, maintaining some of the original's more celestial synth elements, yet muddling them down into a scintillating mixture of muted synthesizers and deep, throbbing kicks that positively hypnotize the listener.

One of the current techno scene’s ‘hidden treasures’, Bristol based A Sagittariun has discretely released a wide breadth of music over the last five years for labels like Secretsundaze, Hypercolour and his own Elastic Dreams label.  Two highly acclaimed albums in “Dream Ritual” and “Elasticity” as well as fifteen EPs have appealed to those who like their techno without frontiers, taking in blistering 140BPM techno, breakbeat IDM and ambient dub with ease.  His second release for Hypercolour displays signs of crossover appeal at long last…

Lead track “Vanishing Point” has already been receiving early plays from the likes of Laurent Garnier (dropping it in his recent Timewarp Germany set), Spencer Parker and Len Faki.  Big pumping beats and spiralling FX fall aside to a lone breakbeat that ushers in one pretty special breakdown section.  The childlike keys and fathoms deep synth stabs (straight out of the John Carpenter school of fathoms deep synth stabs) have already drawn comparisons to the retro 80s vibes to be heard on the American sci-fi horror series Stranger Things.  It’s a breakdown that takes the listener to an uncharted dimension, bookended by slammin’ beats that acts as a perfect mood changer in any set.  Watch this one soar!

“The Pathway” keeps things on an all together straighter tip; an incessant tribal loop weaves and filters around a thunderous kick and shuffling hats, ebbing and flowing all the way in what might be A Sagittariun’s most club-centric and stripped back production yet.   Matrixxman (Dekmantel/Spectral Sound) is on hold to deliver a superb remix; pushing the original down a long dark tunnel for a growling and reverberating techno overhaul.  Splendid stuff from the San Francisco based DJ/producer who is making serious waves on the scene after his landmark 2015 album ‘Homesick’ for Ghostly International.

G.G is a Lebanese DJ, currently based in Dublin. 

He moved there in 2022 and started playing in house parties before eventually playing in clubs like Pygmalion & Opium. He and his friends launched "Groove Selectas", a collective that has been organizing successful parties around the city.  

He is into most forms of House music, and has a signature sound that seamlessly blends minimal house with groovy, trippy soundscapes, starting with rominimal and breakbeats before moving into acid and electro later in the night.
