The maze represents a beautiful metaphor for the many twists and turns of our lives, and is a symbol of hope and opportunity. Unlike the labyrinth, which has only one entry and exit point, a maze has multiple potential starting paths and endpoints.

At certain times in our lives it may seem as if there is only one unattainable way out, or worse yet, no way out of a seemingly insurmountable situation. In these moments we may feel trapped, cornered, hopeless, immobilized, or driven to desperate behavior by feelings such as fear, despair, regret, shame, or dread. These hurdles may lead us to respond with extreme emotions which can lead to hopelessness in any chance for change, the urge to give up on life or whatever we are engaged in, and feeling completely alone in the world. Severe depression and anxiety are some of the treatable conditions which can cause such symptoms.

The maze shows us that there are multiple choices in the paths of our life’s journey, and many chances to improve our situations through conscious change. There is always more than one way to solve any of our problems or to accomplish any of our goals. There is always another way out, a potential for change, and always hope, even if we cannot see these in our darkest moments.

All of us, even the most self-sufficient, need help and guidance at some point and for many different reasons. We cannot always plan or predict what the future holds or where our life’s journey will lead us. More often than not, things do not unfold exactly as we had imagined, for better or worse.

Unexpected circumstances may lead to challenges. These tests, however painful or impossible looking, represent multifaceted potentials for change and growth. It may take time and patience to work through these challenges and understand how to change course or persevere on our current paths.

Trapped In A Changing Maze

The moon hung high, casting silvery light through the tangled limbs of ancient trees. Each step she took felt heavy, the soft earth beneath her boots a contrast to the dense shadows looming around her. Dark tree trunks twisted and stretched like fingers reaching out from the night, threatening to ensnare her as she moved deeper into the forest.

She paused, catching her breath, the air thick with the rich smell of damp earth and rotting leaves. The wind rustled the leaves overhead, a whispering chorus that both soothed and unnerved her. In the distance, a coyote called, its cry slicing through the silence, and Avery felt the hairs on the back of her neck prick up.

Determined, she pressed on, each crack of a twig beneath her foot echoing in the stillness. The path, barely visible, snaked like a dark ribbon through clumps of bushes that loomed ominously. She brushed against the cold, dewy leaves, their moisture seeping through her jacket, a reminder of the wildness surrounding her.

A flicker of movement caught her eye. Avery turned, heart racing, but found only shadows dancing in the periphery. She took another step, only to stumble over a gnarled root, pain shooting through her ankle as she grunted in frustration. The forest seemed to laugh, the wind swirling around her with a mocking tone.

Brushing off the dirt, she pushed onward, her breath quickening. The scent of pine needles mixed with something earthy and pungent—a hint of wild animal musk. She had heard stories of what roamed these woods at night, and each rustle intensified the thrill and dread coiling in her stomach.

Suddenly, a sharp snap broke the night, and Avery froze. There it was again—a low growl, barely audible but unmistakably close. She felt her pulse quicken, adrenaline coursing through her veins. Was it a wolf? Her mind raced with thoughts of what might be lurking just beyond the shadows.

She turned to head back, but the path was already becoming a maze of darkness. Panic surged as she struggled to remember which way she had come. The moonlight flickered through the leaves, casting fleeting patterns that seemed to mock her. She had to keep moving.

Then, a flurry of wings burst from the treetops, sending a jolt of fear through her. Avery squinted into the shadows, feeling the weight of unseen eyes upon her. The forest had a heartbeat, a pulse that thrummed beneath her feet, and it felt alive, aware.

With a shaky breath, she steadied herself. The only way out was to confront her fears. She whispered a silent mantra, “Just keep walking.” She pressed forward, heart pounding, each step a small victory against the encroaching darkness.

And then she saw it—a flicker of light, faint but real, beckoning her through the trees. She followed, hope igniting within her. As she drew closer, the sounds of the forest shifted; the howling of coyotes faded, replaced by the gentle gurgle of water.

Bursting through a thicket, she stumbled into a small clearing, illuminated by moonlight reflecting off a hidden pond. The still water glimmered like a silver mirror, and for the first time, she felt a sense of peace wash over her.

Avery knelt by the water’s edge, letting the coolness seep into her hands. She glanced back at the path she had taken, the shadows no longer menacing but simply part of the tapestry of the forest. The woods had whispered their secrets, and she had answered.

With a deep breath, she turned to face the night, embracing the wildness that surrounded her. It was no longer a place of fear but a realm of possibility, waiting to be explored.

Wetlands are threatened by many human activities. Since colonial times, over half of the wetlands in the lower 48 states have been lost due to development, agriculture and silviculture, including 20% of Maine's wetlands. Although modern legislation has greatly slowed wetland loss, the U.S. continues to lose almost 60,000 acres per year. Moreover, the ecological health of our remaining wetlands may be in danger from habitat fragmentation, polluted runoff, water level changes and invasive species, especially in rapidly urbanizing areas.

Human activities threaten wetlands in several different ways. Stressors to wetlands can be chemical (e.g.,toxic chemicals), physical (e.g., sedimentation), or biological (e.g., non-native species).

Hydrologic alterations can significantly alter the soil chemistry and plant and animal communities. These alterations can be the results of: deposition of fill material, draining, dredging and channelization, diking and damming, diversion of flow and addition of impervious surfaces in the watershed, which increases water and pollutant runoff into wetlands.
The input of pollutants, such as sediment, fertilizer, human sewage, animal waste, road salts, pesticides and heavy metals can exceed the wetland's natural ability to absorb such pollutants and cause degradation. Pollutants can come from urban, agricultural, silvicultural and mining runoff, air pollution, leakage from landfills and dumps, and boats stirring up pollutants around marinas.
Wetland vegetation can be damaged by the grazing of domestic animals, nonnative species that compete with natives, and the removal of natural vegetation. The introduction of invasive species, either intentionally or unintentionally, can put pressure on native plants and eventually push them out of their native habitat. This damages the diversity of a biotic community and can cause other species to leave the area in favor of a more suitable habitat.

An Oil spill is the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially the marine ecosystem, due to human activity, and is a form of pollution. The term is usually given to marine oil spills, where oil is released into the ocean or coastal waters, but spills may also occur on land. Oil spills may be due to releases of crude oil from tankers, offshore platforms, drilling rigs and wells, as well as spills of refined petroleum products (such as gasoline and diesel fuel) and their by-products, heavier fuels used by large ships such as bunker fuel, or the spill of any oily refuse or waste oil.

Oil spills penetrate into the structure of the plumage of birds and the fur of mammals, reducing its insulating ability, and making them more vulnerable to temperature fluctuations and much less buoyant in the water. Cleanup and recovery from an oil spill is difficult and depends upon many factors, including the type of oil spilled, the temperature of the water (affecting evaporation and biodegradation), and the types of shorelines and beaches involved. Spills may take weeks, months or even years to clean up.

In the "Virtual Forest" project, highly realistic digital twins of real-life forests are created. These digital twins allow users to explore the forest on a computer, either by walking through it or flying over it. The application is based on a game engine and integrates data related to the modeled location  as well as data on the trees present at the location. By linking the application to forest growth simulators, the long-term impacts of various management strategies and different climate scenarios can be visually explored. This includes realistic simulation of the shading of the forest floor by trees over the course of the day and year. The application can be used both for educational and training purposes as well as a communication tool.

Started by taia777 in 2012, the original video was removed from Youtube due to copyrighted music. The original version has a Japanese title with a low-graphics thumbnail. Started from Youtube, people would get the video recommended seemingly of nowhere and out of curiosity, they choose to watch it, they find a beautiful collection of commenters who make entries and make us realize no matter how far we are, we are connected with each other regardless of nationality and ethnicity.

A mass extinction is a short period of geological time in which a high percentage of biodiversity, or distinct species—bacteria, fungi, plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates—dies out. In this definition, it’s important to note that, in geological time, a ‘short’ period can span thousands or even millions of years. The planet has experienced five previous mass extinction events, the last one occurring 65.5 million years ago which wiped out the dinosaurs from existence. Experts now believe we’re in the midst of a sixth mass extinction.

Unlike previous extinction events caused by natural phenomena, the sixth mass extinction is driven by human activity, primarily (though not limited to) the unsustainable use of land, water and energy use, and climate change.

Species do not exist in isolation; they are interconnected. A single species interacts with many other species in specific ways that produce benefits to people, like clean air, clean water, and healthy soils for efficient food production. When one species goes extinct in an ecosystem or its population numbers decline so significantly that it cannot sustain its important function, other species are affected, impacting the way the ecosystem functions and the benefits it provides. And the potential for species extinction rises. Monitoring these trends is vital because they are a measure of overall ecosystem health. Serious declines in populations of species are an indicator that the ecosystem is breaking down, warning of a larger systems failure.

Sixth Era of Mass Extinction
