Denovali Records is pleased to welcome RICARDO DONOSO to the roster. In anticipation of the release of his new album Saravá Exu in January 2015, to be released along with Deterrence, previously available only on casette and now completely remastered, we offer the EP Beginning of the Shape as a free digital release. A further new album, Machine 2 Machine, will appear in April 2015, and a collector's vinyl boxset release, containing the previous albums Progress Chance, Assimilating The Shadow and As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another will follow in May 2015.


BEGINNING OF THE SHAPE EP

Carrying on from his highly acclaimed trilogy on the Digitalis label, “Beginning of the Shape” marks his first release for Denovali. The new EP hints at a new direction for the composer, while more experimental textures are at the forefront his sense of pacing and musical development remains intact – a perfect taste for what’s to come in the months ahead.

Ricardo Donoso is a composer, percussionist and electronic musician from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil who currently resides in Boston.  After having studied composition at Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory he has participated in a slew of projects over the years, most notably playing drums for avant-death metal unit Ehnahre and being one half of the ever morphing electronic duo Perispirit. Ricardo's musical vocabulary draws as much from contemporary composition, drone, to techno and noise. Whether on his multifaceted albums or in live performance Donoso’s main interest lies in building and manipulating an immersive sound world that bridges the gap between light and dark, hope & despair and the past & future – creating a truly timeless & transcendent experience.

He has released music on esteemed labels such as Digitalis, Further Records and Hospital Productions and has toured throughout North America, Europe & Asia. His first three albums – Progress Chance (2011), Assimilating The Shadow (2012) and As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another (2013) – were widely celebrated by specialized vehicles such as FACT, Clash and Resident Advisor. Pitchfork Media called it: “dream-state dance music,” while Exclaim (CA) called it “one of the most compelling and satisfying electronic albums of the year” which culminated with performances at the illustrious Sonar Festival in both its Barcelona & Sao Paulo editions in 2012. His music has been described as a sort of ‘anti-techno’ where polyrhythmic structures and meticulous textures blur any semblance of a bar line, instead collapsing in on itself for moments of striking isolation.

Ricardo Donoso has led listeners on an incredible journey through the sun kissed, post-rave morning in Rio through to the blackened shadows of the psyche, to the submerged alien depths of the Scuba Death project. Next time all limits will be destroyed.

Fogh Depot is not just a collaboration between three musicians weaving a cozy melancholic cocoon in the midst of a looming, cold, unwelcoming metropolis of Moscow.  It’s a creativity lab where complex cryptoanarchic ideas rigidify in the viscously flowing Phrygian mode, while the simple and naive piano melodies sweep the listener right back to childhood.

Fogh Depot’s debut album contains eight stories told by different people in different places. "Anticyclone" feels like a massive hedge-maze amidst towering sand dunes of apathetic lust. "Mining" – is a slow descent into a narrow, murky mine, now and then suddenly illuminated by the guide’s flaring torch.  Does he even know where he’s leading his patrons? Sorrowful and strange, "Nevalyashka" is a nostalgic waltz, bringing to mind an old wooden attic where forgotten toys are gathering dust, while the clear and springy bass in "Sagittarius" can only be the belligerent footsteps of a mythical centaur.

The simplest way to define Fogh Depot’s music would be to call it seductive brooding jazz with an electronic twist. Fogh Depot conjoin the unconjoinable, combining distorted low resolution samples with pure, atmospheric piano chords, multilayered drones with bebop changes, four-to-the-floor beat with polyrhythm, simple, easy-to-remember tunes with sophisticated effects for woodwinds, springy bass grooves with timeless ambient soundscapes. Live performance targeted at acoustic perception binds this technological hodgepodge together, giving every listener a chance to find the right texture for a rainy evening and a glass of good scotch.

Piano Interrupted, the anglo / french duo formed by Tom Hodge and Franz Kirmann is a musical entity in continuous reinvention, their music constantly evolving and transforming from concert to concert, record to record. Studio compositions are deconstructed for live shows, becoming brand new pieces, which in turn serve as a basis for future new compositions, like a never-ending “mise en abyme”
It was just a question of time then before the pair turned to other producers to ask them to rework their music. Concentrating exclusively on material from their last LP “The Unified Field”, Piano Interrupted invited a handful of artists and producers from Denovali Records' roster including Hidden Orchestra, Floex, Origamibiro, John Lemke, Saffronkeira and Second Moon Of Winter to reinvent some of their compositions. Oscillating between dub, techno, abstract hip hop, ambient and post-classical, each interpretation offers a completely fresh approach to the work, sometimes barely recognisable, and sheds new light on the infinite directions that Piano Interrupted's intricate compositions can be taken.
“The Unified Field Reconstructed” is a reminder of the possibilities and a promise of more exquisite exploration in the duo's 3rd album, scheduled for later this year, based on recordings taking place in Senegal (where Franz spent his childhood) in February 2015.

THE EYE OF TIME is the Solo-Project of French musician Marc Euvrie. Euvrie's musical development is deeply connected with the French DIY punk and hardcore scene, though he has been classically trained as well. He started to play piano being 9 years old, composed his first pieces with 15 and studied cello at the conservatoire after finishing school. Euvrie was involved in several bands before he began to translate his personal reflection of our complex world into music, which initiated THE EYE OF TIME. His extensive self titled debut has been released in spring 2012 and exposed a dark look on the present, past and future: revealing an unnatural direction of the human being's existence, embodied by pregnant textures ranging from cinematic melodies, classic acoustic sounds to disfigured drones, noise, electronic manipulation, loops and samples. When putting out the second full length “Acoustic” in June 2014 one might have been surprised by the consequent change of focus. Looking for the motor, the personal needs to survive, he found himself experimenting with only Cello and Piano. Marc Euvrie’s alert critical mind has made him one of the most astute observers of today’s society. March 2015 marks the release of The Eye of Time forthcoming album “ANTI”. Four letters taking us to the most extreme and darkest recesses, influenced by the likes of Third Eye Foundation, Portishead, Neurosis, DJ Shadow, Björk, Sigur Ros, Edvard Grieg, Sergei Rachmaninov or Godspeed You! Black Emperor. 

"ANTI" is darker than anything Marc Euvrie has created so far. The process of writing and recording took him 3 years. Right from the beginning the album was meant to be the dark side of "Acoustic", trying to sincerely translate a realistic point of view of our time into music: Industrial, despair, horrific. Where “Acoustic” was promising a glimpse of hope, “ANTI” is confronting us with despair – pitch-black and constricting. A long cry in the darkest night, turning against the world, and baring all the frustration; seeing the end of everything, but being incapable of talking. The few lighter shades scattered over the record convey a melancholic reference to something that is already dead. A brief review, seeing the beautiful things we made, the potential of humanity, considering that an end has been reached. "ANTI" is finishing with a more peaceful song, minimalistic, as if we had accepted our fate. The whole record is construed around the title song "ANTI". 14 minutes of sweeping industrial music leading into an apocalyptic finish screaming out loud along punishing beats. The EYE OF TIME’s output was never supposed to be understood as resignation. There is no other option then showing society’s open wounds and bringing up the most painful subjects, as it seems there is a strong need to face the darkest things before your very ears to finally wake up. And Marc notes: “I try to drag the listeners into hell as deep as possible so that they don't have any choice but to be beaten to the ground and to jump back into light.”

With Dysnomia, the Brooklyn-based group Dawn of Midi made up of double bass player Aakaash Israni, pianist Amino Belyamani and drummer Qasim Naqvi abandon improvisation in favour of composition, utilising sophisticated rhythmic structures from North and West African folk traditions to weave a sonic tapestry of trance-inducing grooves. From close up one may see only dots, but when stepping back an undulating image reveals itself. “We didn’t want to create anything cerebral,” says Belyamani, “we wanted something visceral, something that would awaken our instinctive dance impulses.” 

“We wanted to make a record that sounded both musically futuristic and sonically vintage,” explains Israni, “and since the album never saw a proper international release, it is very exciting to see what might happen when more people are exposed to it. And to be aligned with Erased Tapes, whose enthusiasm for the music they release has done a lot for exposing unique instrumental and electronic music, makes it that much more interesting.”

Ricardo Donoso has composed a new paradigm of ambient music, in which concrete textures and digital synthesis expand on an abstract world in constant movement & mutation. Under a chain of progressive rhythm’s, cinematic textures and elegant melodicism, Donoso’s work pushes through with piercing strength, manipulating a sonic wave through space with nothing but pulse and mind blowing intensity.
Although Donoso’s work has coalesced into a much broader and dynamic beast, his early work continues to be a source of inspiration. ‘Symmetry’ now compiles Donoso’s first three albums, lovingly referred to as the “Digitalis Trilogy” which includes Progress Chance, Assimilating the Shadow and As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another in a deluxe 4LP boxset & 3CD edition.
A truly entrancing journey of polyrhythmic counterpoint, the ‘Symmetry’ collection takes in influence from minimalist composers such as Reich & Riley, early techno and trance, and lush and deeply harmonic ambient music. It’s possible to look at the ‘Symmetry’ trilogy as a blueprint to Donoso’s later work in both its musical scope & thematic grandeur. Amidst all of its wide eyed, dreamlike states there is always a rumbling of subtle violence piercing just underneath the surface creating a truly immersive experience.
