the kid - Live

The first release, by Boris Hegenbart, features a long, hypnotic B-side, where melodies and rhythms fan out from the methodical rotation of a single musical object. Although its formalism may share some of the bold simplicity of Steve Reich’s early electronic phase pieces, it finds a lyricism that situates the album in a much more inviting and open sound world, along the lines of Oval. Like the five releases to follow, First/Dew embraces popular forms in a way that displaces the awareness of experimentation. It might easily be forgotten or come about as an afterthought.

First/Dew was originally a self-released CD issued in 1998, so to fit on vinyl, it had to be cut down in length. This gives the album its subtitle, The Hikuioto Selection, and the B-Side its addendum, musicforcicadas(cut). The album was never intended to deal with the format of vinyl directly, but it does so as a consequence, and this also sheds light on why Hegenbart so often cites Dub music as an influence. While his music is generally flowing, he also accents its textural quality by making hard cuts that weave together different groupings of sounds or the same sound from multiple perspectives. Dub is rich with this kind of experimentation, where the mix is explored from different angles. One could easily find an element of the rhythm section suddenly brought to the foreground. Lee “Scratch” Perry in particular developed a now-legendary relationship to the mixing board, creating a dance between its various channels. A track might be stripped down to the backing vocals and then casually reconstructed, or combinations of its parts might be heard crashing into one another. These abrupt juxtapositions can play out within the music or at the level of format. Hegenbart’s transition from CD to LP creates a subtle bleed between the two.
