Being part of Smoke Radio during my first year at the University of Westminster has been a huge privilege, and a ridiculous amount of fun. I’ve been able to do what I love with my friends, who happen to love radio too. 

I’ve always found that the presenters I love listening to most of all, are people who are totally authentic. I hope my demo demonstrates that, at heart, I’m a huge dork. I love radio, but I’m nowhere even close to being what the kids call “peng” - I’m just me. 

This year on Smoke, I’ve presented a breakfast show on a Thursday with my mate Joe, someone who most probably could be described as “peng” (or so he’d like to think). I’m not a morning person, but my brain wakes up around 1 hour and 50 mins into the 2-hour programme. I’ve done a lot of silly things on Smoke Radio this year. I’ve announced my true love to the airwaves, travelled into the dark depths of Harrow at 2am, and attempted, and failed, to ask Olly Murs what he likes on a jacket potato. I’m proud to say that only one of these things actually got us into trouble (am I selling this yet?)

I like digital things, so it was important to me to make sure that the social media accounts for the show were really busy. Along with our producer, Pulama, we’ve posted videos of various live student performances we’ve had on the show to our social networks, as well as general show promotion.

I very much enjoyed hosting the Student Union Election “Big Debate” this year, which was great experience at Paxman-ing it up, asking some hard-hitting questions to the candidates – I apologised to them all after because I don’t like being mean. I also hosted part of the night time section of the 36-hour marathon broadcast for Jailbreak, where students had to get as far away from the uni as possible within the time limit. It was great fun and very exciting.

I have enjoyed being part of the student radio station so much this year. I’ll be on the committee for the station, as Head of Social Media & Branding, and I’m busily giving the station a bit of a facelift.

I’m obsessed with lots of different parts of radio, and presenting is something I’ve loved doing since I was 14 and started a radio station at my school. It’s been a privilege to meet and work with other talented radio people at university, because they’ve pushed me to do better, and I can’t wait to do more during my second year.
