The Prophecy of Daniel, Part I. The Announcement

Balancing Act for solo piano was inspired by the poise, precision and power of dancer and choreographer, Miyoko Shida. Captivated by video footage of Miyoko’s intense, yet meditative, balancing act known as Sanddorn Balance (created by Swiss Nouveau Cirque master Maedir Rigolo), I was immediately moved to write a circa 4 minute piano solo as an homage to her usual 15 minute routine which encapsulates the idea of living in the fragility of moments between breaths. Written in senza misura notation, the visual space between notes represents an approximate duration of note values and rests in the music. Unless otherwise marked, "strictly in time," there are no exact durations and each performance of the piece welcomes the unique sense of time within the performer. Sending this piece to the Paris based dancer with a note in my limited French inspired a relationship with plans for future collaboration on a longer sound installation work in which Miyoko can “activate” a sound by touching its source.
