Mauretania is a state in northwestern Africa on the Atlantic Ocean. This was adopted by many newly formed African states during the decolonization process from the mid-20th century onwards. The heterogeneous peoples of Africa have traditionally had different settlement areas, which contributes to various conflicts and wars over territorial claims, raw materials, and power.

While most African countries were long governed by autocracy, democratic movements became more common from the late 20th century onward, with Africa performing the worst since democracy measurements began. Poverty, famine, child mortality, and health problems have been significantly reduced in recent decades through advances in education, economics, medicine, and infrastructure. The importance of African countries in the global economy in terms of GDP remains low, with a few exceptions such as South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, Angola, and Morocco. However, several African countries have been among the world's fastest-growing economies since the beginning of the 21st century. The continent's raw materials and arable land are of increasing importance to African countries, as well as to the industrialized and emerging economies that trade with them.
