Dead End

The result of two experiments:

First, we wanted to see how Vietnamese gongs would sound when played in a Balinese or Javanese type gamelan formation. So I sampled my gongs and ended up with two choice samples: A 12" son doong gong being hit with a yarn mallet and a 10" bossed gong being hit by a wooden clapper. All the gong parts in this piece are made with only those two samples.
I retuned the samples and set up multiple tracks playing the samples at different octaves with different EQ and effects.
This worked astoundingly well, and we even get the intermodulations and breathing rhythms found in gamelan music. This is probably more down to imperfect gong tuning (or sampler intonation, or sample playback rate) than anything else, but it works!

Second, we wanted to play the sounds using a five-tone scale such as is common to gamelan music. Again, the result is pretty convincing.

Unlike most gamelan ensembles, this one has two "fundamental" instruments, with both types of gong contributing to the harmonic foundation. Both the gongs used were made by Hmong people, so I guess we could call this "Gamelan Gong Hmong"! :D

There's also a koto in there too BECAUSE I'M JUST CRAZY LIKE THAT.
