A remake of the 2009 track, now that I've got Cubase working again for the source files.  resisted the temptation to overload with too many vocals!!!

Get In There II

This track was started in 2020 during Covid.  The title refers to the fact that I was down to my last few weeks before I wouldn't have any money or be able technically to stay living in Singapore as i hadn't worked for more than 6 months.  And then I got a contract, about a week before my time was up.  and then another one, another one, and thankfully now in 2025 I've been working since.  but it took a while to come back to a track called last legs.
i'd left it in 2020 as an instrumental, and put it on the album Press Pause as it was pretty much finished.  Now in 2025 it's taken a different shape with epic building vocals and a driving, if frenetic drum beat.  for some reason it reminds me of Arcade Fire, even though it doesn't really sound anything like them. some in the end finale that echoes the original take of No Cars Go.

Last Legs II

This track was originally on the 2006 Album Sonambulism.  Making it 19 years old.  
amazingly, around this time I was bouncing every midi track down to audio.  so now that I've got Cubase working again, going into these old tracks and touching them up (admittedly in Logic), is fairly straightforward.  Of course, some of the plug ins from 2006 are long since lost on a PC somewhere. 
this is a long sprawling and indulgent track.  Takes quite a while to get going.  Give or take a couple of notes on the piano and adjusting the drum tracks a bit - this is pretty much ow the original sounded.

Keep Moving On

You didn't think I'd let the last track posted stay as an instrumental did you?!  one of those times when you very quickly find a vocal sample that fits just perfectly.  even more so because it actually sings the title of the song (which was originally from 2006).

After a week of global brand strategy workshops... contrary to the lyrics, not everything falls down.  Thank every deity in every faith for that....

Keep Moving On Again

This is a remake of a track from the 2007 album 'Switching You On'.  machines booting up and shutting is a common theme it seems.
this one's quite dub  / dubstep in style.  just with quite poppy singing!!

Happy Days Are Here Again II

This a reworking of the 2006 album title track Sonambulism.  With added vocals, SFX and additional pad layering.  With this - and the mispelling - I decided to rename it!  Making for better cover art. Which is a combination of AI generated art with photo and graphic overlays.

Sleepwalking to Tomorrow

This is a reworking of the track from 2007’s ‘Strangely Familiar For All The Right Reasons’. 
With some synth reworking and added vocals. However, all the guitar work is my original playing from 18 years ago. 
The title comes from often swing this guy at the bus stop in London. Perhaps in his late 40s. Scruffy. Not homeless, but unable or unwilling to look after himself properly.  He’d be stood there, punching numbers into an oversized calculator every time a bus came and went. Never, not once, did I see him ever get on any bus. 
With the vocals and detuned vocoder…. In 2025 it’s become a story of unrequited love between an infatuated woman and a man too busy and connected to tech to notice.

Man With A Calculator

This track was originally done in 2009 for It's Always A bit More Work Than You Think.  Most of the sounds were bounced down - so it was pretty easy rebuilding it. Although it took a while to find the right Sugar Bytes Effectrix patches.  And, my word, there were quite a few of them!

As with a sizeable number of my tracks, the ending turns into a different song entirely. 
Going from G Minor to G Major.  Now with vocals added to it, the difference is even more pronounced.

This track came out of an extended jam with Dave Nicholls.  The first time we played together since my poorly received decision to 'break up the band' (Amber Waves) in 1998 - just as potential touring gig suppoty slot for Kula Shaker was on the cards....  
it was our thinly veiled attempt to do something like Fool's Gold by the Stone Roses.  So thinly veiled, wee called it 'Homage'....!!

The now customary reworking (in 2025) with vocals and better instruments of an old track (from 2004).  From a jamming session when Dave and I played together for the first time since we splut the band before any success...  we were trying to be the stone roses.  this remake takes the track further away from the origins of the 'homage'.  but it's sill there.  channelling our inner mani, reni, squire and brown.  boys - you burnt bright for a short time, but still lighten up my days most months.  i even love second coming,  thank you for playing Singapore c2013.  you were bloody brilliant.  everythin tight, and in tune and on the groove.  
New Order played the following week.  and they weren't good at all.  1-0 to the Roses.

Homage (To A Life Lost To Interference)

Well, here’s a little number for the lovers on the dance floor…. 

Originally the track ‘Galling’ from 2009’s ‘it’s always a bit more work…’ - this was an awkward track.  Never knowing whether it was in A minor, A major, D minor or D major. Some nice little guitar parts though. 

Race forward 16 years and with a trashy male vocal sample from loopcloud, it’s turned into some sort of electroclash party. 
We all just want to party?

You Just Came To Party Too

The original track was called 'Beetles' and was on the 2000 album 'Monte Cristo Gamble' (sic).  I wrote it in response to a challenge from someone who said I couldn't do a straight dance tune.

trance music was big then - the poppy side of trance that would soon morph into EDM and take over the world. (I think everywhere I go in SE Asia seemed to play EDM from 2010 to 2020.  Only now, I'd say Kpop has taken over).

The OG was never really finished.  I mixed it down with a fade in and out, and it was only 1 min 40 seconds.  So now in 2025, I've finally given it the love and attention to turn into a bone fide trancey EDM poppy smasher.  only 25 years to late to hit the charts....

Out Of Sight

This is a cut down of the track 'Out Of Sight'.  It's shorter out of sight - so myopic.  [grown].
this would have been the 7" played across Radio 1, Kiss, Capital and hopefully mimed to on Top Of The Pops.    If i'd finished it 25 years ago....

Myopic Out Of Sight

This is a reworking of 'Couped Up' from the 2000 album "Monte Cristo Gamble' (sic).  I also wanted this one to have vocals but had no idea whaqt i was doing back in 2000.  So instead it was a running cycle of stuff i took in and out of the live recording (Ableton style before Ableton) - using the on board effects of my brand new Roland Mixer that I'd just got.

Hold Tight (Couped Up II)

Here's an instrumental from 2007 that I've reworked with added syntths and vocals.  Turning into a folky bittersweet song of lost love and damning realisations.

Personal Space

Another day, another remake! haha.  This one was the first track on the 2004 album 'A Quiet Place'.  That's my first ever recording of me playing the acoustic guitar.  

The OG's nice, but a sprawling, meandering piece with little form.  Thanks to some perfect vox from loopcloud, it's taken proper shape into the third slignhtly folky track published in a row!!

Alone Again (We Rely On Love)

A 2025 remake of an odd little acidy instrumental from 2006's Sonambulism.  I suspect I was listening to hardfloor at the time!  Tidied it up, mixed so it doesn't distort -  and added some vox / vox effects.  but mainly kept it as a groove.  
not sure what i was hoping, planning or actually leaving behind back in 2006.  but it's a fairly common theme.  One of the first tunes I fell in love with was Ride's Leave Them All Behind.  This sounds nothing like that - but would have been influenced in the title!!

Leave It All Behind II

This is a reworking of the track 'Lighter Fluid' from 2006's Sonambuilism.  Th original is pretty much intact - except cut down from the sprawling 9 and half minutes - meandering trip hop with no hook or direction!!  Here we've got some dance vocals meant for about 135 BPM, feeling much more thoughtful and intimate when brought in at 100 bpm. 

echoes of imogen heap's hide and seek in here - not just because those words are in the vocals. though no vocoder has been used.  just waves harmonies, which is damn excellent.

Better Stay Away From Me

This is a 2025 remake of the track 'Roger Williams' from Sonamnulism in 2006.  The original name came from spending 2 weeks in New York and living in that hotel in Midtown.  I'd been to NYC once before only for a couple of days, so this was awesome.  8-9 years later, I very nearly moved there to live.  Everything was organised, and then I pulled out at the last minute after my salary was being cut to lower than in Singapore - with a massive hike in taxes.
anyhow, back to this track - it was written when i got to London.  A long ambient dub fest, where I even reecording my own singing on it.  which is very rare for that time.  
everything's pretty much kept here.  added some female vocals (giving the new track name).  some synths remapped from Atmosphere that I used back in 2006 to Omnisphere.  a touch of extra percussion and drum fills, a proper mix and master.  and here we go!

Under My Magic Spell

A remake of the final track from 'A Quiet Place' from back in 2004.  Another one where I made a mistake on the key signatiure, yet put in vocals that sounded pretty good, especially with waves harmonizer.  which, when it does sound good, sounds very good.  but can be god awful too if things aren't clicking.

originally called upside down because I felt like it started with an end, then went into a main bit.  but most of that start has been trimmed out for this remake.  it was 2 mins of ambient guitar playing.  no doubt I thought I was channel Pink Floyd on the insteller highway to the orb.  but it just sounded like i'd taken a few too many.....!

Upside Down II

The original (from Sonambulism) was an odd mix of me playing electric and bass guitar put to a 303 sample and breakbeats. 

For this remake I’ve kept it eclectic by adding British vocals, Bollywood strings and some extra German techno. As you do. 

I expect people will either love or hate this one! 

Looking For Something II

Another remake from Sonambulism.  This time, the first track.
and lucky days - 2 songs in one.  possibly 3, if you include the scractchedvinyl interlude.
the original had the islamic call to prayer on it.  the updated version goes all in.   
what starts as a charming song about having no regrets for anything you've done for love.
it decensds into anger about a relationship - boiling over from beruit to bagdhad.  
though Banjul is actually in Africa. 

Banjul

Another remakke in 2025.  This time a track from 'It takes more work...' from 2009. The original had some lovely ice-crush reverb distortion - that I just couldn't recreate.  
But adding the \Korg M1 House Piano to this gives it a cool late 90s vibe (nothing new there then!)
the lyrics (from loopcloud) seem to suggest that the world's a mess.  So seemed kinda appropriate.
the title comes from 185 Park Street in London, where I worked at iris before going off to Asia.  The building had a nonsense floor plan and even a area called 'the suicide room' (no windows).  it's been torn down now for overpriced, under-spaced executive flats. Plus ca change. 

One Hundred and Eighty Five

this track was originally called 'Tasquiem' (no idea why) and was on the 2006 album Sonambulism. 

based on a classic balaeric bass andfunk guitar.  now with some suitably chilled, but dancey pumping pads.

Remake of the 2006 track "Fck Fashion".  With added vocals, middle 8 and jazzy breakdown!
this is not an anti-fashion song.  its a song about fashion for f**king.  or so i hear.

Fck Fashion

This is a remake of a track from 2006's Sonambulism.  The original had potential, but i could never get the bass line in time on Cubase back then.  This version strips back a lot of the distortion on guitars to free up space for quite a melodic set of harmonised vocals (thanks to waves there).  A short and mainly sweet little pop song with a touch of bite.

It Doesn't Have To Be This Way

Both the original and remastered versions of Lose My Way are already up here on Soundcloud.  But the other day I found this instrumental version from the original writing sessions.  full of odd glitched, completely f**ked up levels and all the wrong sidechains driving all sorts of unexpected compression and expansion.  listening again, what I'd thrown out at the time, now sounds like a brilliant sonice adventure.

Lose My Way (Lost For Words)

This is another 2025 remake of a track from 2006's Sonambulism.  
In this case, a track that certainly wasn't ever finished.  but one that had some uplifting / mournful strings as it switches from C# Min to E.  
now in this remake, it almost sounds like a mixtape of 4 different tracks put together one after the next... as it's now inherited sections in Amin, A maj and B min.  
somehow, i like it.   there's a driving techno beat, and a remarkable Indie style chorus that comes in about half way and then does it's chorusy repeating thing.
one day i'll write a punk song with 3 chords.  that day is not today.

oh - and possibly the most awesome cover art.  so inspiring from the hallucination of AI -  it influenced me to put in samples of rivers and racing cars into the track.


Long Time To Notice II

The original Homage was a. ... erm.. homage to a certain manchester band who single-handedly turned a load of indie disco kids onto dance.  my sister Caroline, and therefore me, her younger brother sneaking into the Cube or the Agincourt in Camberley.  

when Dave and I did the original back in 2004ish, I also did a remix.  Which Dave claimed was better.  Having done the rework of the original, here's the rework of the remix. Copy of a copy of copy of copy.

and even more, because now it's a homage to more than one song.  another, slightly older manchester band who were also able to shift from indie to dance via Ibiza - taking in the England football team on the way.  You'll recognise the kick drum and the synth bass sound.  

now, i think this remix is better than all the others.  original?  no.  makes you wanna dance?  absolutely.  

Blue Gold (Homage Redubbed)

30+ years of writing music.  now back to lots of hardware to complement the soft synths.  And of course, the compulsion to add the kitchen sink, fridge and oven is still there!
