Le mix est deep, s'inspire du New York fantasmé de la fin des années 80 et du début des années 90, il s'attache à recréer une ambiance club de danse suave et sensuelle et se compose d'un sélection de disques sortis entre 1988 et 2007, avec une dominance pour la période 90-95.

First (hopefully of many!) "Jazz (We've Got)" radio show.

I've been wanting to do a show inspired by this idea for the longest while, just mining and digging back through jazz (+more) and hip hop with the art of sampling being a bridging link.

Recognising a sample in a song always felt like such a wonderful easter egg, and I've always found it fascinating how a song can be universally adored, with a small portion of it being loved so much that it would form the DNA of a new piece of music (for me to fall in love with too). The idea that there's this thread connecting artists and music transcending generations, backgrounds and genres is so utterly romantic to me.

Every episode will highlight (mainly) a jazz musician whose music I love, and I'll explore their sound and catalogue through hip hop productions that sampled their sound and recontextualized it to a new generation.

I'm hoping to develop this into a show where I can invite musicians and producers to chat more about the process of sampling as well as their fav samples/approaches to production. I'd also love to get this idea to a point where at the end of every show I can share an obscure jazz or funk track by an artist, and put an open call for producers to share their reworks/reimagining of the song to feature in the next episode. Would be cool for this to be a proper musical exchange!

But! That's for the future. For now I just want to share this 1st episode: an ode to one of my fav trumpet players, the legendary Freddie Hubbard. We'll hear some of his iconic pieces (specifically 'Red Clay') that spread through such a luminary career, retold through the music of A Tribe Called Quest, Charlotte Dos Santos, Gagle, Jack Wilkins, & Raekwon.

TBH, I never listened to the killer B side version with its vocal dubs and Street Fighter samples before. So here we go, best of both sides.

Ok, this song was basically screaming in sexual ecstasy for an edit, since the original was only suitable for strip clubs or orgy soundtracks.

So neutered it I did and now we have a completely playable version of fine South African breaksy swing beat with some corny raps sprinkled in.
