This album was recorded over the last three years, during the process I came closer than I've ever come to death (hunting accident), found new perspectives on life through love and gratitude, gained new friends and family. Starry Skies Opened Eyes, my first epiphany as a child staring at the stars, losing myself in the blackness between light.

Our host Peter Agoston didn't know a lot about guest Malik Abdul-Rahmaan before they sat down for this talk but by it's conclusion they time-traveled through one striking life story. As there is much more to this low-key Brooklyn-based beat-maker/producer than meets the eye. Having never met prior, we get treated to a pretty unique tale of how music can quiet literally keep someone one sane in the face of great duress. Indian Agent is the collaboration between sidereal visual artists and musicians Yéil Ya-Tseen (Nicholas Galanin), OCnotes (Otis Calvin III), and Zak Dylan Wass. Historically, the Indian Agent was a post filled with settlers appointed by the colonial U.S. government to control Indigenous populations. These non-Indigenous Indian Agents managed and enforced oppression of indigenous civilization throughout Turtle Island. The Indian Agent once oversaw the rape, murder and brainwashing, of minds, bodies, souls, land and culture in the name of the United States of America. 
This true history of the Indian Agent is intentionally shrouded in mystery along with truths about the spread of the sickness known as manifest destiny.

In adopting this title, we shift and reverse the brainwashing and destruction of past Indian Agents. We replace destructive false agency with our song, purpose, and lineage. As artists we harness the power of our blood memories to speak truth and positivity of our collective agency in radical contrast to oppression. We recognize our existence as a product of the violent history of the United States, our ancestry is Indigenous, African, and European, we come from boreal and tropical rain forests, deserts, islands and oceans; carrying the songs and stories of the land and our people. In sharing our stories and song we become the agents of our instinctive desire: sharing peace, light and vision with the world.

ABOUT AASIVA: 

Colleen Nakashuk, who performs as Aasiva, is a young Inuktitut songwriter and exciting addition to Nunavut’s flourishing indie music scene, one that is quickly gathering momentum and attention on the national stage.
 
Aasiva’s sound, airy and lively, is shaped by her melodious voice set against playful ukulele. With Inuktitut lyrics and delicate throat singing elements interwoven throughout her songs, Aasiva’s music offers a fresh, buoyant and distinctive twist on indie folk.
 
Originally from the remote and majestic community of Pangnirtung, Aasiva currently resides in Iqaluit, also home to new label Aakuluk Music and, not coincidentally, a hotbed for contemporary Inuktitut music. A graduate of the Nunavut Sivuniksavut program for Inuit youth, a groundbreaking cultural and educational partnership with Ottawa’s Algonquin College, Nakashuk is eager to pass her knowledge of throat singing to younger generations of Inuit youth through her performances. She has appeared with throat-singer and Jerry Cans collaborator Avery Keenainak throughout Nunavut and beyond.
 
With a new album brimming with songs about language, love and the luxury of her Inuktitut upbringing, Aasiva adds her voice to a growing chorus of young artists proudly bringing new Inuktitut music into the mainstream.
