Ahead of Hard Working Class Heroes 2016 this weekend, I chatted to four (or some 100 acts) performing at the new Irish music showcase, Bitch Falcon, Shaker Hymn, Naoise Roo, and Galants. Dead Little Penny unveil their velvety-yet-caustic shoegaze/fuzz-pop single, “Honeycomb”. The track is warm, lush and noisy, which feels both fresh and classic in today’s musical landscape.

The self-produced track is the coming together of guitar-slinging vocalist and songwriter Hayley Smith, and drummer/synth player Simon Buxton, who create an intoxicating soundscape of turbulent textures, fizzing guitars and dreamy synth.

“After reading an article about the Radium Girls, who contracted radiation poisoning from painting watch faces with luminous paint, I was inspired to write Honeycomb, a song that explores the toxic effects of infatuation and volatile love.
With what started as a well-paid job with the added bonus of being able to glow in the dark, the bodies of the Radium Girls began to deteriorate, ravaging them from the inside out and sending them to their untimely deaths, and the imagery of this sad story stayed with me for a long time before I sat down and wrote this track” - Hayley Smith.

“Honeycomb” is Dead Little Penny’s first studio-style recording, and a clear sign of things to come.

Howling

Straight from headlining Bad Vibrations festival in June, The Laurels have re-emerged from the studio with another taster from their upcoming third album. Sound System, their first release since welcoming multi-instrumentalist Kat Harley to the band, showcases her hard-hitting bass and celestial vocals as they punch through a maze of Blade Runner-meets-Bowie synths and sizzling guitars in the eye of an electro grunge storm. High rise apartments and rent prices loom large over this paean to a future dystopian city, the inhabitants of which are doomed to a lifetime of evenings spent in queues waiting to eat at fine dining restaurants after a round of putt putt golf. Sound System finds this group of part-time disc jockeys loading up their van with generators and loudspeakers as they seek to reignite the street party. Catch their sound system in super high fidelity to celebrate the release with a small run of shows before they jump back into the studio to finish the album. Launching at the Lansdowne Hotel on July 20th and the Gasometer on July 27th.
