Eternal Recurrence 1113

It was commissioned by Helsyd Piano Trio and Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. This piece is based on 4 pieces for violin and piano Op.115, No.2 and 3 by Jean Sibelius, while the violinist and the pianist from the trio perform the No.1 and No.4 in the same concert.

By combining the materials from the two movements, this piece shows a brand new sensation. The key change from E minor to E major comes from No.2 with the similar structure of No.3. The tempo is kind of in between No.2 and No.3.

The title In Between is not just about the combination of No.2 and No.3.
That two movements are also in between the movements that the violinist and the pianist perform in the concert.

In Between

The piece is based on the poem by Nalan Xingde. All the melodies, including the top part of the piano, are also the based on the sound of the poem in Cantonese. This is the final version after many revision during the week of the Intimacy of Creativity 2017 Contemporary Song Festival.

As If The First Enconuter

Piano solo piece written for Simon Chiu. Based on the subject that he wrote and challenged me with it to write a piece for his recital.

Impromptu, Romance, and Fugue

This piece was commissioned by Hong Kong Composers’ Guild for the Hong Kong Contemporary Music Festival 2018: Hong Kong Delights, written for Veloz Harmonica Quartet.

The way to play the harmonica is to blow or to draw, so that the air would go through the reed in two different ways. The two different directions affect the pitches and the quality of the sound. Hence, there are few reasons that people would have to exhale and inhale. In different paces and intensities, for example the daily life breathing and the gasping after an intense movement (running, exercise, swimming, etc.), the sounds of inhale and exhale would be different.

	The idea of in and out, triggers the thought of “in a fashion” and “out of fashion”.  In another way of “in a fashion” and “out of fashion” is kind of like comparing “being tradition” and “being avant-garde”. This piece is more like a burlesque. There are things that trying to show somewhat the “older” style, in the same time breaking some “rules” which normally people would certainly follow.

In and Out

Galison Lau is one of the most active composers in his generation in Hong Kong. He studied with Wing-fai Law, Clarence Mak, and Samuel Lo in Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He also studied with Leonardo Balada and Fabien Lévy in Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. US.
Mr. Lau’s compositions were performed or broadcasted in many places and events, including IC2017 Contemporary Song Festival; ACL 2013 Singapore; ISCM – ACL World Music Days 2007; Being chosen as one of the pieces from Hong Kong in the 2006 International Rostrum of Composers in Paris; the Lilian Baylis Theatre in Sadlers Wells, London; Musicarama 2005, 2010, 2011, 2012, in Hong Kong; New Generation 2005, 2006, in Hong Kong.
Galison got several commissions, including Hong Kong Arts Festival 2014; Spotlight On Young Musicians Concert Series 1 in June 2011; Musicarama 2010, and 2012 by Hong Kong Composers’ Guild with sponsorship from CASH Music Fund. In 2009, Scents, for string quartet, was chosen to be the first prize of Harry Archer Memorial Scholarship. He also composed a piece for the inauguration of the Wellcome Theatre of the HKAPA in 2006.
His music was performed or read by renowned ensembles, including Munich Chamber Orchestra; Parker String Quartet; MIVOS Quartet; RTHK Quartet; Varshavsky Shapira Piano Duo; Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.

劉詠浲在香港同輩中其中一位最活躍的作曲家。他曾於香港演藝學院師隨羅永暉，麥偉鑄及盧厚敏。於美國卡內基美隆大學曾師隨Leonardo Balada及Fabien Lévy。
作品曾於「創意間的親暱」2017當代歌曲音樂節、2013亞洲作曲家聯盟、2007國際現代音樂節、2006巴黎國際作曲家交流會議、英國薩德勒威爾斯劇院、音樂新一代 2005、2006決賽、音樂新文化 2005，2010，2011，2012等演出或廣播。
劉氏曾獲多個委約，包括2014香港藝術節、2011年6月 聚「招」青年音樂家第一季、由CASH資助香港作曲家聯會委約音樂新文化2010及2012等。2009年，作品《氣味》，獲得哈利．阿徹紀念獎冠軍。2006年他為香港演藝學院新落成的劇院開幕創作及演出。
作品曾由多個樂團演出或試奏，包括慕尼黑室內樂團、Parker弦樂四重奏、MIVOS四重奏、香港電台弦樂四重奏、Varshavsky Shapira鋼琴二重奏、香港創樂團等。
