I would like to start this year with this album.

I have been making music alone for almost 20 years now. I would like to thank everyone who has ever purchased or listened to my music, my subscribers, my collaborators, everyone who has criticized as well as praised me, the equipment and electricity I have used to make music, my room, my time, my friends, my family, everything. Thank you so much.

As a token of my appreciation, I would like to release this album for free. Please enjoy it.

I have only one request. For once, for about 40 minutes listening to this album, please do nothing and think about nothing and just be in a daze. We are too busy. We need time to intentionally give our heads and hearts a rest. Once you get into that habit, you will inevitably feel yourself becoming energized again.

Green Flash

1. LOW - HIGH

"While being in the midst of transition, it is almost impossible to recognize that transition itself"

First of all, please listen to the entire piece. It's 35 minutes of unremarkable sound that goes on and on. You will probably find some repose there, or perhaps you will subconsciously listen to this sound as you do your housework or desk job. But many of you probably didn't notice a certain change in the sound that took place during those 35 minutes.

After listening to the beginning for a bit, I want you to skip ahead and listen to the last five minutes or so. You will realize for the first time that the sound you have just listened to has actually changed over time without you knowing it.

What I wanted to emphasize here is that "Only by setting a certain starting point and an ending point can we clearly recognize the transition of time itself". Although concepts of time and seasons such as "Morning" and "Winter" exist, they are merely concepts that humans have assigned to themselves for the convenience of their lives, and they are endpoints from the perspective of counter-conceptual starting point such as "Night" and "Autumn". For example, when we look at images taken 30 years ago, we can clearly recognize that time has definitely passed. It is precisely because there is a starting point of "30 years ago" and an ending point of "Today" that we can recognize the passage of time itself. And there should not be many opportunities to recognize this clearly.

In these 35 minutes, you will realize once again "We are actually living under various conditions that are constantly and gradually changing". At the same time, I would like to present the importance of questioning various things that are now taken for granted.

2. LIGHT - DARK

In my past productions, I have focused on how to mix natural and artificial sounds. I have been experimenting with methods and proportions of mixing the two because I have always believed that only when the two are perfectly blended in an exquisite way can a beautiful work of art be created.

One day, I came across a passage in a book by the Japanese artist Taro Okamoto in which he referred to the beauty of Japanese gardens, and I was very strongly attracted to it.

He wrote, "The artificial garden, which is the unreal, and the landscape outside the garden, which is the real, are distinguished and recognized more clearly by the stone wall or fence that separates the two."

In other words, by placing not only the two but also a third party between them, a dialectical resolution is achieved, and the whole becomes more beautiful.

I began to feel strongly about applying this to my sound production and put it into practice. To incorporate something else between the melody produced by the synth, which is the unreal (artificial), and the field recording, which is the real (natural). In fact, you can see the struggle in some of my past works. I will not go into it here, but anyway, I pursued the third party, the so-called "Boundary line," and became strongly interested in the "Boundary line" itself.

It is something that lies between two things and separates them. In my daily pursuit of this, there was a moment when I suddenly looked at the sky at dusk. The sky was a beautiful gradation of bright yellows and reds left behind by the sun, and blues and blacks as the evening sun began to set. At that moment, I wondered, "Is there a border between each color of the sky?" I began to wonder if it would be possible to answer this question with sound.

As in the previous work, the theme of this piece is that "While being in the midst of transition, it is almost impossible to recognize that transition itself", and this time, I imitated the changing colors of the sky at sunset and dawn. Just as I cannot clearly distinguish the color of the sky I saw from yellow up to this point and blue from there, you will spend these 20 minutes without being able to clearly perceive the changes in the sound itself.

Transition 2

3. DIFFUSION - CONVERGENCE

This winter it has snowed more than usual in my area. Before I went to bed, I would look out the window and think, "Oh, it's piling up like this." But when I woke up in the morning, I found that the snow had piled up much more than I had seen last night.

If I had stayed up all night looking outside, I would have been convinced of the change, but since I only saw the beginning and the end of the change, I was surprised at the amount of change.

What is change? I am very interested in the idea of change. Change in nature, in people's minds, in fashions. The theme of this work is also "gradual transition," but in the midst of change, we should not be able to notice the change itself so easily.

4. PROSPERITY - DECLINATION

There is a Buddhist term called "無常". It means impermanence, that things change and never stay the same, that life and death are always changing. For example, many of us Japanese who value Buddhism find more beauty in the fading of cherry blossoms than in their full bloom. Because we see the transience of things there, we naturally feel the need to cherish the finite nature of life.
The words "無常 - impermanence" or "諸行無常 - the impermanence of all things" have been frequently used in much Japanese literature since ancient times.

Flowers and trees that sprout in the spring will eventually wither and return to the earth. We must respect and follow such an unchangeable fate, which is inherent in nature, in order to gain guidance for life.

In this work, the sound fades away unnoticed, and in the end only traces of its former existence remain. Here I wanted to express the "aesthetics of transience.

5. SHALLOW - DEEP

We go about our daily lives without giving it much thought. In the morning, we wake up to the alarm on our smartphones, turn on the tap, wash our faces with the water that comes out, and brush our teeth. We eat breakfast heated in the microwave, oven, or on the stove, and then we take the train or drive to work or school.

If we don't pay attention, the day goes by without us feeling anything special. But this is not the norm. We are just standing on top of the layers of history that our predecessors have gradually accumulated through their wisdom and effort. And we are only part of the layer that the next generation and the generation after that will stand on.

This work imitates the accumulation of such invisible history in sound. The sounds don't build up, just five mundane five-minute drones, but if you pay attention, you'll notice that they change little by little. I believe that to observe this is to see the invisible history and to get to the essence of things.

10. PLEASURE - UNPLEASURE, 快 - 不快

It was so hot during the day, but in the evening it somehow became cool and comfortable. Also, the sun sets at 5:00 p.m., whereas it was still light at 6:00 p.m. until the other day. I think this is how we all perceive things.

The phrase "nothing remains the same" has been passed down from generation to generation, regardless of the time period or the East or West. We judge good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant, by comparing past events and phenomena with those of the present, but the only thing that exists is the "eternal now. Only by accepting the present can we find our way.

日中あれだけ暑かったのに、夕方になるといつの間にか涼しく快適になっていた。また、先日までは18時でも明るかったのに、最近は17時で日が沈む。そんなふうに知覚することは誰にでもあるのではないだろうか。

「変わらないものは何ひとつない」という意味の言葉は、時代や洋の東西を問わず語り継がれてきた。我々は過去の出来事や事象と現在のそれを相対的に比べて良し悪し、或いは快不快を判断しているが、存在するものはただ「永遠なる今」だけなのだ。今を受け入れることでのみ道が拓かれてくる。

This “Red Bridge” is located in Taisyakukyo valley (帝釈峡), northern Hiroshima, Japan. It is known as a scenic spot. I love this place and often visit because it has many colors and smells, and they make me feel calm. It has water, mountain, blue sky... What else do you need? 

This album was inspired by my experience when I visited there last Spring. I hope you can feel earthy smell, color of water, clear sky of blue of this scenery through this album.

"In this decade, I visited many places in order to record organic sounds such as, rare bird voices and sounds of waves (I live in the basin area far from sea). There is a river near my house and I often visit there to record, or merely walk. When I recorded in the early morning hours at that riverside for ‘Under the Morning Mist’, the body of water was beautifully wrapped with a dense mist. A gorgeous backdrop and inspiration for this arrangement. 


A park located in the city where I reside, was the inspiration for the arrangement, 'In This Perfect Dream'. The captured sounds of trees, leaves, and the winds.. All beautiful sounds around me that we typically take for granted. I got lost in time, it felt like a perfect dream, hence the title of this arrangement."

The Seaside Restaurant

I was listening to some of the sound files I had made for past live performances to use as reference for a particular work. The file for a live performance in 2017, which I was supposed to appear but never did, really caught my attention. 

I have no idea what I was thinking at the time when I created the file with the looping processed water sound. All I can say is that the sound, though very simple, captured my heart in 2021. 

It was just a loop of some processed water sounds of different lengths, but there was a nostalgic comfort in it, like when I was still asleep in my mother's womb. 

In line with my concept as an artist, which is to "Multidirectionally considering aesthetics which are very familiar, often forgotten, concealed in nature or events, and finally reveal them," I discovered a beauty that I had seen many times but had been unaware for years in my Mac hard drive. It is very pleasant to listen to it by myself, so I present it here with some modifications to the original file.
