Cloud Ruler (Tapeology Part 1)

My third album “Mujo” will be released on November 11, 2022. 
The album was made from 2014 to 2022. All together 9 years of time but over 10 years including the research period. 
It is an album of improvisation and recording simultaneously, using non-instrument objects along with the sounds that occur 
from a frosted lake and drifting ice, and recordings made by affecting the environment itself.
This album is comprised of 2 discs. Disc 1 features performing and interaction with sounds that occurs above the ice. 
Disc 2 features performing and interaction with sounds that occurs below the ice using hydrophones.
This trailer is a mixture of tracks included in disc 1 and disc 2.
Hopefully, you'll be able to hear it through solid mid- and low-range speakers or headphones. And this is just a trailer. It's even more amazing when you listen through the entire sound source.
The CD is full of ideas that you can't get from the download version, and the booklet on page 32 contains untold stories about the making of the album and photos I took between recordings, so I hope you buy the CD and listen to them.

2022年11月11日に松本一哉 の 3 枚目となるアルバム「無常」をSPEKK からリリースします。
今作「無常」は、氷をテーマとした作品となっていまして、2014 年から 2022 年までの 9 年 の歳月をかけて制作しました。リサーチを含めると 10 年以上になります。凍結した湖や流氷などが起こす音と共に、本来楽器ではない モノなどを使用し即興で 1 発録音をしたり、色々な仕掛けを用いて環境そのものに働きかけて録音した作品です。 
本作は 2 枚組になっていまして、disc1 は氷上で起こる事との演奏や働きかけを基にし、disc2 はハイドロフォンを使用し氷下で起こっ ていた事との演奏や働きかけを基にした作品構成になっています。
このトレイラーではdisc1とdisc2の音源を混ぜて構成しています。
願わくば、中低域のしっかり鳴るスピーカー、またはヘッドフォンで聴いてもらえたら嬉しいです。そして、これはあくまでもトレイラーです。音源全体を通して聴くともっと凄いです。
CDではダウンロード版では味わえない趣向を凝らしてますし、32ページのブックレットにはアルバム制作の秘話や私が録音の合間に撮影した写真が記載されていますので、ぜひCDを購入してで聴いてほしいです。

SHM PODCAST #11: Selection by Porya Hatami

In the Arctic region of Raudfjorden, on a pebble strewn beach stands a small, crude wooden cabin. It’s said that on the same site stood an earlier cabin once inhabited by a lone trapper seeking refuge in the fjord after a terrible mining accident left him disfigured. As I stood in the hut, peering out through one of the many cracks that made-up a wall, I wondered what it must have been like, both for the trapper and others like him who chose to live in such climatically extreme isolation. 
I tried to imagine living in concert with such an unrelenting, yet singularly wondrous place; a home amidst the striking duality of extreme elements, harsh winds and frozen ice, and the many fragile, delicate and captivating sounds produced therein.  
Within this reactive terrain of sound and light was a world so finely tuned it responded to every nuance in temperature, no matter how slight. As the sun arced across the mountain tops, ice fragments in the fjord dissolved, gently hissing and cracking. Occasionally, two fragments collided, producing strangely resonant harmonies refracting off the pebble strewn shore, creating a prismatic soundscape of colour and motion. 
The majority of recordings found in ‘frostbYte - red sound’ are taken from a day at the hut and its surrounds. The two exceptions are a triangle, which is introduced to provide resonance within the piece (augmenting the resonance that was unexpectedly found within the ice and stones that populated the shoreline so prolifically) and a small dinghy as it slews through an icefield. This second recording occurs toward the end of the composition, and is used to express the rugged motions of the boats rise and fall as it pounded through the frozen fields of ice collecting in dense masses around glaciers. The omni present glissandi throughout the work represents the vertical nature of the surrounding mountains, glaciers and cliff’s that form the contours of the fjord enveloping the cabin.   
The title itself refers to the name given to the region in the early 17th Century by the English explorer and whaler Robert Fotherby, who referred to the fjord as ‘Red-cliff Sound’.

“When I go into the nature and focus on particular sounds as if I were the conductor, I find there are numerous accidentally composed music playing here and there. And my idea was to join this nature orchestra providing sounds to them to form another different world which would enable myself to listen to them from a completely different angle.
I decided to use water as the main theme as I’m somehow attracted to them maybe as I grew up in a place where it’s cloudy and raining all year around. Sounds evolved accidentally from different places of different period and times, and that very moment I played / not played to them. To me, it was full of excitement to join the nature. Some sounds were able to record upon countless visits, and some just happen to be lying there. I tried different approaches so that people can enjoy and face each and every sounds. It would be my pleasure if you can listen to the happenings and the inevitable, and also conscious and the subconscious. “

この作品は、自然の中で自然の音と共に演奏をし、後に多重録音などをしないというコンセプトで作った作品です。
僕は自分が指揮者にでもなったつもりで音を選んで聴けば、身の回りには常に偶然に作曲された音楽が溢れていると考えていました。
そして、その偶然のオーケストラに自分も参加し、自分が音を足すことで全く別の聴き方が出来たり、自然の音が自分で演奏しているかのように感じられたり、無かった世界を生むことが出来ると考えていました。
作品のモチーフに水を選んだのは、年中雨や曇りの土地で育ったからなのか、昔から水の音や水っぽい場所に惹かれていて、何かを創作する際に水をモチーフにし続けてきたからです。
色々な年月、色々な場所で、その時間、その瞬間に偶然鳴った音。
ある瞬間に自分が鳴らした音、鳴らさなかった音など、自然と一緒に演奏をする醍醐味が作品内に詰まっています。
何度も何度も何度も通い尽くして録音出来た音や、たまたまそこに居たから録れた音など、1音1音とじっくりと向き合ってもらえるよう色々と趣向を凝らしました。
偶然と必然、作為と無作為なんかを意識しながら聴いてもらえたら良いなぁと思います。

His musical research is aimed at exploring the relationship between the opposite, incorporating a wide range of source materials including field recordings, noises or glitches.

This episode was edited by Joseph himself, which has allowed me to approach it primarily as a listener. And I've been must struck by Joseph's balance between conviction and query.

Though much is covered in this half hour, Joseph's reflections inspired so many questions for me. What happens when you shake the dust of the day-to-day a little? When you inject a new choice into the established theme? What happens when we dive in head and heart first?
